Removing the plastic lens fro the headlights ?
herbiemercman replied to herbiemercman's topic in mkiv Technical
Thanks guys i will try it. -
Hi everyone, As many recommended i heated the headlight assembly, sort of too hot to handle, but i need to know where the actual separation is from the main black plastic moulding from the lens ? I have moved all the clips and the actual joint the clips are supporting is where i tried to prise the two apart, no way. ! ! So before i break something can any member who has carried this out before i break something, tell me where the actual joint is ? Is it wher i have placed the tool in the pici attached ?. Many thanks. Herbie. 20160409_155844.jpg (186.2 KB)

Hi Turbo V8, I did my own and the quality of the leather was superb, sort of 2mm thick and quite supple, it also makes the car smell of new leather, not an easy job, but well worth it, good luck with yours. Herbie. http://www.mkivsupra.net/vbb/showthread.php?328775-Leather-seat-covers-diy

Found this in my fuel tank, anyone got an idea what is is
herbiemercman replied to Mike2JZ's topic in mkiv Technical
Yep i am a rare breed and i did it, but never again, it took ages to syphon out, and then had to short out the fuel pump to get the last dregs, filled up with petrol, but would stil not start, as a last resort i tried the old Indian trick and poured a cap of petrol into the air intake, it started on two pots, then back fired and set the top of the engine a blaze, it fortunately only lasted for a few seconds, but quite a scare. Eventually got it started cranking with foot flat on floor, it ran perfect after that and i put a full bottle of Whynns fuel enhancer in. Apparently this happens a lot on all cars and there are companies dedicated to recovering the situation, it only needs you to be not concentrating and you gone and done it. Herbie. -

Could it be one of these inserts you can fit in the filler neck to avoid miss fueling. -
So this guy got the point in the end, he got good advice. Just a related question, is it possible to remove and replace a conrod shell or little end bearing with the engine in the car ? Herbie.

Hi Chris, Thanks for your help, looks like it is a tappet, on start up the engine was quiet recently and following a fairly quick drive, not hammering it, oil 90C, returned and no noise at all, when i really hammer it and oil at 105C, then the light tapping comes on from the rear of the rocker cover. I am going to leave it and keep a watching brief as i know what it is now and why it is ocuring and the loss of power from a valve not fully opening must be minimal. Herbie.
-
Hi Chris, Thanks for that, i will put the screwdriver on as you suggest, i hope it is a tappet, however if it is a little end or a piston i assume, and hope this could be changed with the engine remaining in the car? all be it i do not know how one would check which of the six cylinders had the faulty part ? Herbie.

I purchased a top quality car cover six weeks back, due to the special liner and a few secure straps, it is great, no dirt dust, water, leaves, bird crap etc, BUT it is in my drive way and i have a back EMF battery charger fitted, if the last two facilities are not possible for your situation, then the suggestion to seek out a friend or some one else who could rent you their garage.
-
Hi Ian, I don't put the radio on as i like listening to the exhaust note, lol, but to be serious i would value your opinion on "why do i get the tappet noise when the engine is hot and then goes off when the engine cools down" ? ? According to Chris there are no hydraulic lifters, just mechanical bucket and shim, so where is the hot oil causing the noise to come from ? For all the 19 years i have had the car i have used part synth oil, but due to the NA/T conversion and the turbo heating up the oil, i put fully synth oil in, that was 500 miles ago, so why would this produce some noisy excessive play in a moving part ? ? If you have what-app i could send you a sample of the noise if you are prepared to help me. Herbie.

Abreviations and acronyms - do we have a list in the club ?
herbiemercman replied to herbiemercman's topic in Supra Chat
TOGTFO ? Does any members know what this means ? I hope it is some thing nice, as i posted a genuine request, and i do not want to be banned again for agro. Herbie. -
Hi Everyone, Does the club have a list of technical and general communication abbreviations? I have been a member for many years but still struggle with many good posts because they use abbreviations, i know quite a few and when i post i put in brackets what they mean. New members must struggle even more. Today i asked some members what the ones they posted meant and they replied, but it would be good for all members if some one could post a list. Herbie.

Hi David, I did have my eyes wide open but could not find the answers, do you have them, it would be appreciated. Herbie.

Some one out there must know about 2JZ-GE tappet specs, but i have found after much research, that yes they are "bucket and shim" set ups, BUT they could have hydraulic lifters? If this is the case then my tappet noise problem is solved as these things are oil temp related to noise problems, as you can see from my opening thread my noise is bad when my oil is hot after a high speed blast, then when it cools the noise is gone, typical hydraulic lifters. Help please.

Hi Guys, Iv'e got the dreaded loud tapping noise coming from the rocker cover where the twin cam shafts live. The noise only comes on after a hard fast run with oil temp at 95C, when the oil cools down to say 50C the noise stops ? I do not think this is a little end on one of the con-rods, as it is a light tapping, and not a distinct knock. The engine runs quietly and very smoothly and performance is great, just confused me how the oil temp is playing a part? I assume this engine has the bucket & shim adjustment for the valve stem clearances ? and not the hydraulic valve pusher type ? Also i assume my engine will not have the VVTI system fitted?, i know this can cause tapping noise? So if my noise is a tappet clearance issue as described above, then is it some thing i can ignore for a while? my engine has 44k miles on from new, i know as i bought the car new, the engine has covered circa 600 hard miles since it had the NA/T conversion, it has fully syth qual oil and an oil cooler. Any advise from your experience will be much appreciated. Herbie.

Do other motorists stereotype supra owners?
herbiemercman replied to herbiemercman's topic in Supra Chat
Hi J-Jz80, I learned a long time back not to talk about "the doctor" on the open forum as it drew too many members having a go, some members PM me for information about my NA/T and who did it, and in the main, for the money spent, the job was commendable. Also at the time i was nieve about the rules of the club for traders. He does not come on the club fprum any more and his facebook entries have stoped, so not sure what the situation is ? Herbie. -
Do other motorists stereotype supra owners?
herbiemercman replied to herbiemercman's topic in Supra Chat
My Supra is now part of the family and i get enjoyment out of the engineering of it and it is a unique aesthetic, for the most part with most people this draws admiration, yes there will always be people who scorn on this kind of car, i am not arsed at all, as it cannot be personal, not like a bloke in the pub who tells you he used to go out with your wife stuff. So most of us see this in a very similar way:innocent:, the thread has drawn a lot of interest, and it even reached as far as Denmark. -
Hello Members, I know i am biased on this subject, but firstly IMHO Supras are not a small sports car, so i think the black ones look sleek and originate in sort of Darf Vader planets, don't get me wrong, ALL Supras look great, but there has to be, like everything else, a top of the tree one? Your opinion ? Now the way you have to drive one, for me a manual box with limited slip diff has to be the real bizz, to actually use the box to brake into a certain corner and then power out of it is a real skill and a great buzz. I have a big Merc and the auto is paramount, with "kickdown" cruise control etc, no way would this be a manual box, but it is a powerful family cruiser, top end 130 +. Your opinion ? The power supply, my brother has a TT and we purchased them new in 1995, mine was a NA which my brother always refered to as the slow one, to the family and friends, there was some irritation for me along the way, but recently i showed him my NA/T , and my dyno info, he is well back now, not that i am that arsed, but i never imagined this would be possible, thanks to members of this club and traders, and non traders, who have developed the NA/T's.The main lump of the NA engine is the same as the TT's, all along it was just the top bit that needed tuning. Basically i got a new car for £5K and it is awesome, from a "oner" to the 120 mark it is no match for anything so far, this can only occur on M/Ways, and to date, even modern really fast stuff get a shock and give up ? much better now than the pre NA/T days where MX5's etc and Golf GTI's were a real challenge, i was considering selling my car. Your opinion ? Herbie. SUP.BEST.PIC.NAT..jpg (203.2 KB)

Hi supramat, Your getting a bit old for this club, like many others on here, but remember, "your as old as who you feel". lol. -
At the risk of being ridiculed what is a PFC and a EMU how do they work, were they manufactured for certain cars ? I also think as well as "Moderators" the club should appoint some "Professorships", starting with Sir Chris Wilson and Tricky.
