New supra gossip

I simply don't believe the essence of the FT1 concept can be mirrored in the car we have seen driving around.

I also don't think the Z5 (as based on its predecessors) provides a platform suitable from what I would expect the next Supra to be based.

The Z series BMWs have been OK, but never earth shattering in the BMW performance lineup, which doesn't encourage me about how this model of car as a basis for the Supra will play out.

I am a bit surprised that articles talk about the supra sharing platforms with the Z5. Is this confirmed?

I thought they were going to work with BMW on a different project.

I was convinced that the new supra will share platforms with the LC500.

Let's wait and see.

This is the impression I was under, based on an article I read a while back. Can't for the life of me remember where though.

I thought that the BMW/Toyota joint venture was for a Z5 and a new addition to the Toyota lineup. Then the Ft-1 was showcased, seeming as though it would be a standalone model. Could be the case and this version of Toyota's offering is just taking style tips from the FT-1, to then be continued in their new range?

Yes, There was also a video of the development of the LC500 that I posted on another thread about the new supra on here. The engineers working on it were referring to it as "supra". Toyota also released information about it (LC500) coming with a hybrid system which is the way most people would assume the new supra will go.

Lets hope so as that thing under the camo looks well dis-proportioned.. some styling queues from the FT-1 but totally not looking like it.

I just went to Toyota today to talk with my usual parts guy, and asked him what he knew about this whole situation.

He said nothing internal has been released in the UK about the release of a new Supra, other then rumors. He also said that Toyota are planning to release a new mid range, smaller chassis sporty car which is soon to be out on the market.

I'm going to pester him about this everytime I see him until I can get more out of him :p

Call it the FR2 Toyota, I dare you ;).

Then get on with making a proper Supra replacement!

Amen! :) I have a feeling this will be the Ft-1 wannabe, as there are many design cues at the rear that look the same, but the front end looks so high at the sides, and makes the car look dumpy. the FT-1 was so sleek.. Im worried if they cant pull it off it'll look like an abortion.

I don't blame them for making this car, but don't let it be a Supra replacement. If the GT86 is a Celia then we need the following.

1: A BMW collaboration MR2 replacement.

This will have a similar line up to the MK2 MR2 with 2 engine choices, not necessarily 2l and 2l turbo, but filling the same gaps. Say 170 and 230bhp.

2: A GT86 to fill the Celica GT4 spot.

I know the "the GT86 needs more power" thing has been done to death, but seriously I think it would be right. 200hp and 275hp

3: An FT1/LC500 Supra replacement

350hp plus. Not toooo fussed on engine choices but needs to be a direct GTR competitor at the top of the range.

To be a direct GTR competitor it needs to have at least 600bhp and be able to put down all that power. Maybe some form of hybrid.

A video has appeared of the new Supra doing snow testing, worth having a look

http://www.autoguide.com/auto-news/2017/02/watch-the-2019-toyota-supra-drifting-in-the-snow.html

However, what I found interesting is at the end, they are also testing the new BMW Z4. They sound VERY similar. To me that would suggest that the new Supra is either A) Not a new Supra at all, just a heavily disguised Z4 coupe, or more likely B) they share the same engine. That is a promising sign for those of us who want a straight 6 engine :)

Looks a little on the small side.

I like the 'double bubble' roof design, helmets in mind maybe.

Yet another article filled with "rumor has it" and whispers by random people.

Until Toyota themselves mention anything, I'm not holding my breath. Could just be a hardtop and soft top Z5 that they're testing. They look and sound near identical with no badges on them. These pages are just writing whatever they want to generate views
