  1. Yes (re: [edit]), that is exactly what I was trying to say. The version I had before (not SpeedM8) was trying to work the same way as the SpeedM8 VVTi Tiptronic version, i.e, fitted at the ECU to do the speed conversion function but also delimit. On my version, this led to random problems with traction control, in particular 'Snow' mode. I'm not sure if the SpeedM8 unit has this problem but I'm pretty sure that it will exhibit undesired behaviour in any systems using the converted output signal of the speedo (definitely active spoiler but may also include speed sensitive steering) unless you've fitted another SpeedM8 device to overcome this (see post above). All the uncertainty here is what prompted me to start this thread asking for feedback. In the absence of any response and to avoid these problems, I decided that I wanted a 'simpler' unit with no delimiter function, just a speed converter function that would/could, therefore, have no effect on any other system in the car other than the speedo needle and odometer. Hopefully that's what I've got here on my desk in front of me. I hear what you're saying about the kick-down issue and my reasoning is if I'm not going 125mph, am I bothered (with apologies to Catherine Tate) if I can't exceed 112mph? For me the answer is "No" - it's far more important to me that the car works as Mr T. intended. N.B. If this new version does work for me (still haven't got around to fitting it), I'm afraid that if you want similar functionality, as well as reprogramming the unit, you would have to do a little rewiring too (doddle).
  2. I have original Toyota mats that don't appear to have a non-slip backing. On the driver's side mat, there should be a plastic hook-type thing that screws into the underlying carpet and stops the mat sliding under your pedals. I don't have one and I can't find anywhere that can sell me one (separately). Anybody got one knocking around? Thanks Edit - got one now.
  3. Back home from holiday last night and found 'new' (alternative) version waiting for me. This SpeedM8 unit just fits behind the dash and will NOT act as a delimiter (only on the Tiptronic model - the enclosed instructions indicate that it WILL delimit non-Tiptronic 'late' models, i.e., those with non-digital odometer). I'll try to find some time to fit it today and report back ...
  4. Found a nice parcel waiting for me on my return from holiday - just what I wanted. Thanks! (Free bump)
  5. Do you still have any of these bits for sale? I'm after a n/s side vent panel (mine has a boken clip) and the o/s black plastic rear wheelarch moulding. Thanks
  6. Yeah - keep it! Either that or suggest putting the wedding off to give it a bit longer to sell (see how that goes down) ...
  7. I was sat in Pizza Express in Reading centre with the family on Monday night, about 1810 - heard something familiar and fleetingly saw Green Goddess go past the window. Must've been you? Looked and sounded great mate - best of British luck with the sale!
  8. Maybe it's still available from Mr T. Anyone know the part # ?
  9. Thanks again bud but all sorted now - buyer is collecting from Nottingham after visiting show in Brum.
  10. Over compression? More likely oil (or the lack of it), bearing failure = "leg out of bed"!
  11. Cheers mate - that's very decent of you but I'm still a long way from Sheffield, unfortunately. However, I'm going to take it down to Nottingham on Friday - one step closer I hope.
  12. Sorry - missed this post. Yes, the RS*R is already sold (it was sold before I took it off the car!). Just got to work out how to get it from Yorkshire to South Wales in one piece ... (sorted!)
  13. Right - had a look at the Walbro pump that had been fitted by the previous owner. The cover plate showed no signs that anyone had been near it and I was beginning to doubt that an upgrade pump was fitted ... until I saw the plastic 'doughnut' ring that secures the pump hanger to the tank - battle-scarred from having been battered off/on before. I would imagine that Toyota have a special tool to tackle this but I had a brainwave - quick 'shufty' through the kitchen drawers came up with this (see picture attached): a "Boa Constrictor". I think its intended purpose is for stubborn jam jar lids, etc. but it works a treat on this bloomin' ring! I did the trick to avoid spraying myself with petrol before undoing the banjo bolt (disconnect plug from socket then turn the engine over a few times) - no spurtage and no problems restarting the car later either. I didn't even bother to put my cigar out. Anyway, hanger carefully removed revealed a well fitted Walbro pump - correct model (outlet on correct side to align with pipes), staggered wire joins and properly insulated. Of course the difficulties of fitting a proper Denso (195130-) pump now become apparent: the pump is longer and 'fatter' than either the stock JDM pump or the Walbro so it won't fit between the base of the hanger and the pipework and it doesn't quite fit the rubber pump base either; the outlet is in a different place so, even if it wasn't too long, the outlet won't align with the existing pipework without some 'surgery'; electrical terminals are different so it'll need rewiring (again). I decided not to 'bodge' it just yet so I'm now on the look-out for a UK fuel pump hanger. In the meantime, I've put the Walbro back but I think I may have improved the noise situation quite dramatically. I noticed that there is very little clearance between the outlet of the Walbro pump and the hanger pipework; I could see that unless you were very careful installing the short piece of fuel pipe that joins the two, they could touch - metal to metal - which could result in some pump noise being transmitted (and possibly amplified) to the hanger assembly and, hence, the car boot/interior. Therefore, before rejoining the pump and pipework, I substituted the naff jubilee clips with some proper fuel clamps (size 13 or 15 should be appropriate for 5/16 hose) AND before I tightened them up fully, I just put a bit of tension on the bottom of the pump/hanger assembly to ensure that a gap between pump and pipe was maintained. Did it work? Well, I can't say for sure that it was that or just refitting/reseating the pump played a part but I cannot hear the pump inside the car anymore at idle Anybody interested in a brand new Denso 195130-0872 pump? It's actually manufactured by Kyosan (895091-0810) and somewhat of a rarity (found this).
  14. Incidentally, if you do have one of these units (or the ultra-rare Thor/TRL version) already fitted to your Tiptronic, you can very simply remove the top speed delimiter function. You may also find this gets rid of problems with gearbox change points and traction control (random 'snow' mode). Pin 2 on block C of the ECU is the input speed signal (red wire). If you have a speed delimiter fitted it will be 'between' this wire. To remove the speed delimiter: disconnect (and insulate) the output wire from the speed delimiter that is joined to the ECU side of the red wire; leave the input wire to the speed delimiter, that is joined to the loom side of the red wire, attached (needed for speed conversion); rejoin the red wire ends, to reinstate the input speed signal to the ECU. All this will do is stop the speed signal being 'capped' so you will hit the ECU speed limit if you exceed 112mph. The speed converting functions are unaffected by this change so, if you're not experiencing any other adverse affects (because systems 'downstream' of the speedo are still getting a converted signal) you're done! Me - I'm still waiting for the new SpeedM8 version to arrive ...
  15. OK - my requirements have changed! I now have the fuel pump but I don't want to 'bodge' it into to my Jspec hanger. Does any one have a UK hanger please?
  16. Sorry for the long post but it really gets to me that such a simple thing as changing the way the speedo behaves can have such a drastic effect on an otherwise brilliant car!
  17. I wonder if anyone with a Speedm8 speedo converter (or other make), specifically fitted to the VVTi tiptronic model, would be prepared to share their experiences of it's performance. The reason why I raise this is because I've been getting erratic behaviour from another speedo converter (I can provide more details but this has been discussed on the forum before - problems with speed sensitive steering, traction control, etc.) and thanks to the wonderful search facility of this forum (and the input of it's members), found that the Speedm8 device appears to offer a unit that meets my requirements, namely: recalibrate the speedo. (odo.) input signal so it reads mph (miles) rather than kmh (kilometers) leaves all other 'downstream' devices (those that rely on an output signal from the speedo.) unaffected. er, that's it! Sounds simple but, judging by shared experiences on the Tiptronic model, is in reality quite difficult to achieve. I think the difficulties have been exacerbated by an extra requirement - that's deliberately not on my list - to delimit the top speed. Anyway, I approached the company that sells the Speedm8, tried to verify that it met my requirements. I was informed that it did and also provided a speed delimiter in a single (programmable/adjustable) device. Great! I ordered one and it turned up today. Imagine my disappointment then when the fitting instructions made it clear that the Speedm8 device is fitted at the ECU, used a supplemetary speed input signal (ABS sensor? rather than the one sent to the speedo), generated a converted speed signal from this and fed this to the speedo - all of which means, of course, that any devices that depend on the output of the speedo get a converted signal and ... I'm back where I started. Or so I thought. I queried this with the Speedm8 technical support team (great bloke called George) who said that they were already aware of this problem and could provide a second unit (to be used in addition to the first) to overcome this. Interestingly, I think he was only aware of this affecting the active front spoiler, not other systems. I'd be interested to know if anyone using one of these particular devices currently has experienced any problems with, for example, power steering or traction control. I explained to George that there was now a known 'feature' of the Tiptronic cars that have been delimited (possible kick-down into the red at high-leptons) and asked whether a 'simpler' version of the Speedm8 could be programmed to meet my requirements without a combined delimiter in a single unit and could, therefore, be fitted behind the dash. Apparently no-one has ever asked for this before but the man from Speedm8 he say yes! I'm sending mine back today for an exchange unit and I'll let you know how I get on but I'd still really like to hear other people's experiences in the meantime.
  18. Thanks - that is a good thread. As no-one has mentioned any problems arising from increasing flow from an upgraded pump (and I have searched), I think I may go for it.
  19. Now that I've fitted the Tanabe exhaust, the whine from the Walbro pump (as fitted by the previous owner who was obviously thinking of going BPU but never did completely) is even more noticeable than it was before (it could be heard even above the RS*R at idle!). I realise that this noise might not bother some people but I didn't change a perfectly decent (albeit fairly loud ) exhaust, just so I could listen to this (as annoying to me as like trying to sleep with a mosquito buzzing around)! Anyway, I'm determined to change the pump now but I'm vacillating between going back to JDM stock or putting a 'proper', quiet Denso fuel pump in (like the UK one). My current thinking is, as it's already been messed with, I may as well replace it with another upgrade pump which would still give me the opportunity to go BPU at some point in the future. However, if I do go with an upgrade pump and I'm still basically stock, am I going to do any 'harm'? For example, is there a chance that the stock fuel pressure regulator won't be able to cope with the upgraded pump? Any advice gratefully received.
  20. Thanks but I think I'll try to hold out for a bargain (like you got?) ... They do (very ocassionally) come up on oBoy (and point taken Nic ).
  21. I think it may be a 'feature' of vBulletin. If you use the "View Full Sized" link it seems to work fine. (Since found another version that doesn't have embedding turned-off - edited original post - thanks Scotster).
  22. Doing a fair bit of 'relaxed' motorway driving recently, I've consistently managed 190 miles out of the top-half of the tank AND I don't know about you but, with the price of petrol now, I don't try to get the tank completely full at the pump any more - the first time the trigger shuts off, that's it, I hang up (after taking particular care to make sure there's no drops left in the nozzle) and pay!
