Good to know, cheers

I wish you all the best with your search

We had a good chat about this, you seem a genuine guy and don’t deserve to be caught out. Try not to let your heart rule your head with this one. It is a sellers market and they know it. 25K is a lot of money to part with and if something seems too good to be true it probably is.

Taking everything in to consideration the one question you need to be asking yourself is; does this look like a well cared for example considering it has only done 40,000 miles?

Whatever you chose be sure to start a thread and get some pictures up.

Good luck but as frank says my instinct was 40,000 miles really?

Well you can see 63xxx (kms) on the dash pic. Obviously that's not a guarantee but what else is there to go from?

You can really only go from the prior year NCT/MOT certificates as they cannot be viewed online, unlike UK MOT history which can be read online back to 2006. If there is no service record, with recorded mileage and dates or NCT history file then mileage, as with any old car, is just a random number and nothing more.

I'll just add to this, the existing owner can request all previous NCT certs for a fee of something like 45e, but only the registered owner can request these. I had the same dilemma previously, so the OP will need to get seller to request these if they aren't present with the car (alot of owners will keep all prior certificates unless they purposely want to hide mileage or genuinely lost them).

Ok, thanks. Something someone mentioned earlier has caught my eye. In the engine bay pic that is clearly a hks mushroom filter. As far as I know, they only do yellow, red, green and blue. The filter in the picture looks pretty far off of all of them. I had one in my evo for over 2 years that was still green as green

Yep it is definitely not good when you can't distinguish what colour the filter should be, that colour wouldn't appear from being laid up but rather driven without change for a long period as it's more black than a faded shade of the colours you mentioned

My 2p is give it a thorough check, no history would personally put me off and if you come to sell later

might do the same to another buyer

HKS filters were renown for being crap at filtering and that one looks very dirty on the outside let

alone whats gone through it, the dash up by the screen looks like its separating which is not an easy fix

Click on the photos a couple of times as i've doubled their size

Good luck

It's a minefield these days, over £20K is a LOT of money and even then no Supra is realistically going to be perfect...."low miles it's been sat around uncared for or it's not good for the car", "Mushroom filter poor filtration accelerated engine wear", "high miles stone chips general wear vsv's worn etc etc" you can't really win as such as people will view certain things more good/bad than others.

Re the filter it could have been on from almost day one, or only the last 10K miles, then you could have a higher mileage one being sold with a stock airbox but was only put back like that to sell and so is in fact worse internally.

You can only do so much, if it's genuine low miles (one of the hardest things to actually verify) then fitting a decent filter from now on and it's 'probably' no major harm done.

I'll pop a pic up of the engine bay on my most recent purchase, it's a low mileage sub 50K miles car (as much proof as you can reasonably get) but to look at it you would not think it at all! looks can be deceptive both ways!

Right. To answer some of your questions. A guy in Ireland is selling an r34 gtr. The seller of the supra has secured the car, but will leave himself flat broke if he doesn't sell it the supra. He actually messaged me before he was sure he was going to sell, and actually took days to even let me know if it was for sale or to give me a price. He said the mileage in Japan is hard to prove, but the mileage in Ireland can he seen on MOT history. Maybe my expectations of the underside are lower than others because I came from a rusty evo, but at 70000 miles the evo was WAY worse than that supra, and 10 years younger, so to me, that looks like a car that has seen far less salt, yes. One more thing that im not relying on but certainly optimistic about after my own research is that the car is being sold on Irish plates and having the Irish logbook put in my name. This means that as the last Irish owner I will be entitled to the import tax that was paid on the supra, at 36%. The rebate won't be the whole amount as far as I can tell, but once officially exported I should be entitled to thousands in rebate. Again, I've never done it, but it seems legit. And to answer your next question, he said he hasn't done it himself and kept the money because he has recently done it on his current r33 gtr that he's selling to fund the 34, and it would look dodgy for a student (I'm guessing older student), to start shipping out cars and making large tax claims.

I'm lost in sense of this thousands of euro you say you can claim back ie the vrt which on a 20 yr old supra was less then couple hundred. Plus it's been paid and put on Irish plates so I stand corrected but your not entitled to any rebate in fact will you not have to pay to reg car on UK plates, this whole thread has me baffled.

I just spoke to the potential buyer lads I'm picking him up sat morning in my supra will bring him to the buyer who I know very vaguely so I will look after him best I can. Unless the law has been radically changed not only is there no refund he will actually have to pay to bring car and pay to register car in uk as this car wasn originally brought in from UK it was imported from Japan.

Thanks for the help everyone. Given that the car has no history other than Irish MOTs, the things that have been pointed out on here etc, but the seller is happy to take it to a motorsport shop when I go over, what are we talking valuation wise? At the moment over here you're looking at paying 18k for a bit of a dog.

Cheers

Let's see how it drives pulls handles etc that's all I be concerned with helping you with the price etc etc haggle is with you guys, what you have to ask is how much is it going to cost to put that supra to your own personal touch taste etc wheels body interior or maybe your happy with how it is and looks.

Underneath looks alright, seems to be a bit of bodywork needs doing and id check/rub the HKS filtration material. I had an old one flake apart once i took it off an old Civic i imported years back, luckily it didn't seem to do any damage but it could.

Nigel you can claim VRT on a car once its being exported, needs a valid NCT and it has to have a VRT export examination done too i.e. back to the NCT centre. Once done you'll get your quote on OMSP and refund. Be a bit hard to do this if you bring it on the ferry the day after you get it! OP should have of this to be informed on how to get it:

On a side note, its not a 1995 with original owner from Longford?

If the car originated from ireland but the car was imported from Japan he won't get any rebate unless I'm reading this wrong.

I am the current owner of the car in question and over the last two days have been trying to refrain from replying to some of the comments that’s have annoyed me so I felt it was very important to address a few issues. I don’t use forums or check for replies so this will be the only response I will be leaving.

First of all I never advertised my car, i was almost pleaded with to sell the car, I had to take almost three weeks to decide to sell the car or not and after several long conversation with friends I decided to contact the interested party and tell him that I would consider selling it as I know of a friend that has a r34 Gtr for sale in Ireland with vrt paid.

The price of the car is not £25k, due to the owner wanting to keep that private I’m not going to disclose the price we agreed on. On top of this, the current owner has the opportunity to claim a certain percentage of the vrt back based on the current vehicle value. Ive currently sold my r33 Gtr to a guy in the Uk for £14500 and I’m reciving €3780 tax back as the car is leaving the country. ( A lot of people in Ireland are not aware of these so I wouldn’t expect anyone outside of Ireland to understand this)

In relation to the previous owner, I purchased this car through a 65 year old women as it was his sons car who lives in Canada. I have not withheld this information and have told the interested party that he can be put in contact with her.

A lot of negative feedback was made of the underneath of the car, this car is a genuine car and hasn’t been tampered with in any way. I could have spent 2 hours with tfr and a wire brush and brought the underneath of the car up like new but I choose not to as it was a last minute sale and I would prefer the owner to see what the car looks like before it’s tarted up so he is aware there is nothing hidden. After seeing the feedback that was left of the underneath of the car I sent these photos on to three large and very reputable Motorsport shops. Richard Bradley of Bradley Motorsports, Jurgen Vallons owner of Jm imports and Brendan stone of stone Motorsport. Not only did they come back and say there is virtually no rust they said that the car was in very good condition. I also contacted several friends in the trade and some friends who own supras all of which came back with the same opinion. ( each reply I got was forwarded onto the interested party)

The r33 that I mentioned earlier that I sold also had no history, there are a handful of receipts here and I serviced the car myself with Milliers oil and genuine Toyota filter. It is very common for Japanese cars to have very little history with it and both this and the r33 didn’t come with any history. Unfortunately there is nothing I can do regarding this.

With regards to the mileage being authentic I have zero reason to believe that the mileage is not genuine at all. Certain people have pointed out service rust that may point out that would verify the mileage is not correct. This is very far from the truth, rust has absolutely nothing with mileage, we all here are adults and understand how I oxidation works. This can be caused depending where the vehicle came from in Japan, ie if it came from the coast or not. Although this car has very little in receipts in terms of paperwork, all of this is recorded on computers now. The nct is all done online and I can obtain a nct report for each year the vehicle has been in the country and the recorded mileage when the vehicle was imported. Also a frequent question was who was the supra specialist that helped me buy the car, again I have informed the interested party and offered him again to be out in contact with him.

I have been extremely honest and forthcoming with the car to the interested party and have absolutely nothing to hide, not only did I not want to sell the car, the person was on to me on a regular basic asking me would I sell it. So in know way has this been pushed on the person who’s interested in the car but it was him that persisted to see if I’d sell it.

I have strongly suggested that not only does the owner view the car but highly recommends he takes it to any Motorsport shop of his choice to get it fully checked over.

I hope on my brief lunch break I have covered everybody’s concerns and questions

Kind regards Finn

Finn, I agreed with the rust comments the car looks fine to me I think it's only natural when a new guy comes on the forum asking for help/opinions (and the seller isn't)that people are picky and highlight issues (however minor) to them, no one wants to be the guy that says 'yeah go for it it's mint' only for it to have issues.

I think you've done all you can to inform/help the buyer, don't take anything to heart I don't think anyone is questioning your honesty.....just the honesty issues around a car sale, if you see what I mean? If I sell a car I expect a buyer to distrust me to a degree?

Anyway best of luck to all concerned in the process :)

As above really. Don't take it all personally Finn. Just this forum has seen its fair share of Supra's which were ment to be clean but wasn't so there just given advise to be cautious really and given there advise on what they would be keeping an eye out if they were in the buyers shoes.

Nice you getting a R34 by the way !

GLWS both of you

Hi everyone. Everything Finn has said is true. I actually made him aware of this thread, I wasn't trying to be sneaky. He's going to get the car a compression and leakdown test. That's about the only way we can test engine health I guess. I'm going to view the car open minded. Nigel said he'll take me to view it which is awesome, and he can do a test drive if he doesn't mind, as I've never driven a supra so have no comparison. Hopefully we get there, Nigel says it drives spot on, the tests come back good, and then we can move forward. Guess I'll find out soon enough. Thanks for the help

It is fairly clean underneath, but not 25K clean, IMHO. I would also be very concerned about guide and ring wear as it has an HKS "air filter" which are notoriously bad unless fitted with a quality foam element. Dust and grit play hell with guides and rings. if it smokes on cold start after standing overnight expect costly head work. I am a bit biased as the only good vehicles I have ever seen come from Ireland are fully laden Guinness trucks....

The we irish as a car nation in generally are animals were purely A to B I'd never buy a 2nd car even from main dealer in Ireland, however there is small group car fanatics, the whole vrt rebate thing threw me but I think Finn is honest genuine he has agreed to any inspection so time will tell, the main prob I feel is history before Finn had it etc, I can't really comment on price as I'd want at least 10k more for mine if I were ever to sell, but as they are getting scarce now and he wants a supra it's a sellers market. I love my supra and as 2nd or 3rd car is a lovely car to own. And over here in ireland I guess it really stands out as we don't have the Aston Martin porsche Ferrari Bentley market.

There is not a day you drive it without people flashing you beeping thumbs up pulling up alongside egging you to give the beans.
