Seems to me a lot of people in this thread seem to be very picky about surface rust and tiny paint defects for a 20 yer old car...

But i also wouldn't be paying anywhere near 23k for an almost stock tt 6...

I agree re the recent price hikes but you can't import one for any/much less and owners/potential sellers are just pricing high to fit in with the few trader cars. Some think it's the way things will always be, might be a little bit of a bubble? But I am with you at these prices

I would struggle to get my head round buying a tt6 right now.

To think I struggled to sell my uk spec 5 years ago for 7k...

Yeah I know what you're saying about the price. I was looking years ago and was told a 6 speed was around 13k.... but I was recently told that importing an almost stock 6 speed would cost me a minimum of 23k but would have well over 100k on the clock, and that was a respected importer. This one has nearer to 40k on the clock

You know the saying goes buy on condition not the mileage although a mint car with very low miles is the ideal senario these are very thin on the ground and command far more than 23k which is in the right area if the mileage is correct.

This car is not mint but good underneath just be aware to refurbish/renew parts of the suspension and strip and renovate the chassis etc doesnt come cheaply.

I would try and look at a couple this week before you view the car next weekend that will give you an idea what is available you never know you may get to Ireland and view the car but one you had viewed may at the back of your mind.

Do you have any pictures under the bonnet and the interior showing any wear etc?

Yeah I'd agree with the consensus here, at least be open to viewing others in the UK before you go over next week. There is better examples out there for not much more money. And the idea that the car is in Ireland it hasn't seen salty roads isnt entirely true, if it has been used during an Irish winter it has seen salt. We might not salt roads to the extent of the UK but during bad weather all main routes will be gritted with salt

He gave me a video tour on FaceTime and went over the car. Generally it looks very good. Clean under the bonnet as far as I could tell. Interior has a few extra gauges on the left hand side of the 'cockpit', for lack of a better word. A load of the trim was painted red by the previous owner, so the current owner carbon wrapped it. Again, it looked ok as far as I could tell, but I can't say for sure until i see first hand. Aftermarket speedo digital Speedo on it.

Actually just found a couple of pics of the interior and bonnet

Supra owners are massively spoilt when it comes to underbody condition, with so many of the cars here in the UK coming from Japan. I hopw that some of the owners here don’t ever buy an old british, american or even Japanese datsun that’s spent time in a wet climate - They wouldn’t be able to handle it!

There isn’t really anything in those pictures of the underside that would put me off that car if I was looking for a black tt6.. It has minor surface rust, easily treated and slowed down if got at immediately. You’ll never stop a car rusting if you actually want to use it, entropy always wins, but you can severely slow it with some good products, properly applied.

The far more important thing for me with supras is 1- to check for accident damage as they are easily crashed if not respected. 2 - Low mileage, to hopefully put off the high cost of expensive replacement items for a bit longer. I.e. turbos, suspension components, gearboxes... etc Especially as lots of parts are being discontinued and there may well be a wait before quality aftermarket items fill the void.

Go have a good look. If you like the colour, it pulls well, doesn’t smoke, no hidden nasties or damage, then it’s surely straight onto the list of potentials! And when I say potentials... look at more than one car!!!

I’ll add that yes you will find a totally mint car still from Japan or somewhere else with low mileage, but you may wait a very long time, it will cost you a premium and you may end up to compromising on spec or colour.

I certainly haven't made up my mind, and am flying to Ireland to look over the car, not buying unseen. Yeah I've read that buying guide, and will be doing all the checks it recommends. I did look at the car you shared, and it does look quite good. I just thought that a nice low miles factory 6 speed would be money well spent

Yeah, my plane lands at 7.50am though lol. He's meeting me at the airport with the car. Got a ferry booked home at 15.00 so I can take the car if it all checks out. Feel free to come share your opinion on the car. My mate has got a supra, so I have an idea what condition I should expect

Two eyes are always better than one and don't forget the golden rule a completely cold start preferably been stood over night so no pick up from the airport!

Now I am looking at the pics on my pc the underneath looks pretty good!

Although under the bonnet its either been kept outside or in a damp garage judging by the rocker covers etc. I think I may expect far too much for my money:)

I think underbonnet looks ok, the front nuts and bolts have zero signs of rust, bit grubby but again shows it's not been steam cleaned or prepped, ie seeing it as is?

I agree with you on the "more for your money" front, prices are crazy now, my Supra buying days are over I think! will have to get my kicks improving what i've got not changing to another. If I see a manual NA at £5-6K i'd maybe snap it up, but even NA's are getting expensive now so this is unlikely. Also the vast majority will be far worse than the car pictured and so will only cost more, if you can even get the bits required.

It does look very honest I think I just expect mint or is it my ocd

I really like the look of the quicksilver tt6 one in High Wycombe it’s got to be worth a look even though it’s there?

I think the air filter will be green but again shows lack of service.

I think that underside looks as good as you can expect, it's not been tarted up for sale it's been put on a ramp and pics taken.

I don’t think anyone was being picky about surface rust, we were suggesting that further investigation of the areas mentioned was needed along with substantial evidence to back up what the seller was saying about the car. This was to try and save the OP a wasted journey or possibly getting stung.

As I said in an earlier post, the skirts and spats haven’t been removed so no one knows if the bodywork underneath is rotten or not.

What is the cars history? By this I mean provable documented history on paper, ideally a folder of receipts.

Has the OP seen any?

Is there any?

Does that car look like it’s done 40,000 miles?

To quote the OP

One guy owned it for years and then moved to Canada leaving it behind. His mother handled the sale with the guy who I'm buying it off of.

So he has no way of proving any history prior to the current owner.

It's in Ireland so hasn't seen salty roads.

You really believe after seeing those photos that the car hasn’t seen salty roads?!

He really doesn't want to sell it, it's not advertised anywhere

The guy is only selling it to buy am r34 he's seen in Ireland. Their import tax is 36%, so he needed to secure it fast which is why he's selling the supra.

Which is it?

Can't get hold of the previous owner as he lives in Canada and his mother handled the sale.

I find this hard to believe. Surely this info could be obtained with the logbook, failing that something like Facebook. The world is a very small place now.

The guy says he's spoken to the supra specialist who told him to buy the supra, and that rust will brush off no worries.

Still no word from the seller of which specialist this was.

The mileage has definitely not been fiddled apparently.

That doesn’t sound at all dodgy.

PS

Ignore me, i’m just a cynical old fart :D

I wish you all the best with your search

We had a good chat about this, you seem a genuine guy and don’t deserve to be caught out. Try not to let your heart rule your head with this one. It is a sellers market and they know it. 25K is a lot of money to part with and if something seems too good to be true it probably is.

Taking everything in to consideration the one question you need to be asking yourself is; does this look like a well cared for example considering it has only done 40,000 miles?

Whatever you chose be sure to start a thread and get some pictures up.

Right. To answer some of your questions. A guy in Ireland is selling an r34 gtr. The seller of the supra has secured the car, but will leave himself flat broke if he doesn't sell it the supra. He actually messaged me before he was sure he was going to sell, and actually took days to even let me know if it was for sale or to give me a price. He said the mileage in Japan is hard to prove, but the mileage in Ireland can he seen on MOT history. Maybe my expectations of the underside are lower than others because I came from a rusty evo, but at 70000 miles the evo was WAY worse than that supra, and 10 years younger, so to me, that looks like a car that has seen far less salt, yes. One more thing that im not relying on but certainly optimistic about after my own research is that the car is being sold on Irish plates and having the Irish logbook put in my name. This means that as the last Irish owner I will be entitled to the import tax that was paid on the supra, at 36%. The rebate won't be the whole amount as far as I can tell, but once officially exported I should be entitled to thousands in rebate. Again, I've never done it, but it seems legit. And to answer your next question, he said he hasn't done it himself and kept the money because he has recently done it on his current r33 gtr that he's selling to fund the 34, and it would look dodgy for a student (I'm guessing older student), to start shipping out cars and making large tax claims.

It all sounds legit and plausible but I would definitely not be banking on or even optimistic about the rebate on the car if its in your name on the logbook. They are EXTREMELY picky with the rebates over here and you will need alot of documentation to prove Irish residency (proof of address within last 6 months, proof of Irish PPS number and photo ID etc.) If you can't produce these you won't get a rebate. Also the car must have a valid NCT which I'm sure it does but if it was declared off the road it may not. So just keep all this in mind before agreeing a sale.
