The dangerous dogs act banned the American Pit Bull Terrier, the Japanese Tosa (I think there was one in the UK at the time, the Dogo Argentino (none in the UK), and the Fila Brasiliero (none in the UK). God knows where the government got the latter two breeds from.
To be precise, it banned dogs of the pit bill "type", which was why, with the active help of the RSPCA and a few vets who presumably saw it as a nice little earner, the authorities were able to kill anything from Staffordshire Bull Terriers to labrador crosses (the vast majority of which had not bitten anyone).
(Give me 20 minutes and I'll tell you why I believe breed-specific legislation was crap then, and it would be crap now )
