  1. I use both soldering and crimps (not at the same time!). My soldering skills have come on in leaps and bounds over the past few days whilst fitting a Thor DSC. However, I've also got a set of cheap crimp connectors and crimping tool, which seems to work well. I crunch down on the crimping tool as hard as I can, then give the wire a GENTLE pull (I think most crimps would let go if you gave them a big tug) to make sure the crimp is biting OK. Steve
  2. Mmm, Sapphire sounds good. Those crazy young-uns in their supras. Tsk!
  3. Thanks guys, Add: It's worth knowing where to avoid, as well as where to go. Homer: thanks, I'll drop Graham a PM. Since posting, I've had a recommendation of R&R Autos in Lennox Ind Estate, Basingstoke. I'll see what they say. Steve
  4. A word of advice to all those looking to get supra insurance for the first time: make sure they quote you for the correct car. Sounds obvious, but I've lost track of the number of times that I've phoned up a broker/insurer, asked for a quote on my imported NA, then when I ask them to confirm, it turns out they've quoted me for a mkIII or something. On the documents they send you, double-check the engine size (nearest cc if possible), whether it's a mkIII or mkIV, and if it's an imported one, try to ensure that it's got the import model code on the documents somewhere (e.g. SZ, GZ, RZ). You DO NOT want to have UK-spec insurance for an imported car: if you were to have a prang, you'd be up the creek without a paddle.
  5. Ian: I should have pointed out earlier that I have an NA. Am I right in thinking that I don't have a MAP sensor? (I only found this out last night!) Carlos: my supra doesn't have airbags, so this may not work. Thanks for the suggestions guys, I do appreciate it!
  6. Thanks for the advice guys. I've phoned Paul E and left a message, waiting for a reply. 12 years of claim-free and accident-free motoring has to come to an end sometime I guess. I'll let you know how I get on.
  7. Thanks Ian. Do you know if the red warning triangle is supposed to come for a "code 42 - no.1 speed sensor" error? I suspect it is: it used to when I first had this problem, but after a few weeks, it just suddenly didn't come on anymore even when the orange engine light did. I'll try the MAP sensor thing anyway though! Steve
  8. Damn. I had a prang in the supra last night. 2 other cars also involved. No serious injuries though, thank goodness. Anyway, there's a bit of damage front and rear to the supra. Does anyone know of a good bodyshop in the Basingstoke area that can do this sort of work? I don't mind travelling a distance to a good bodyshop.
  9. Gavan (tdaxgav) has done it: started with an NA aerotop and dropped in a VVTi TT lump (and then converted it to a big Single).
  10. Unusual request possibly, but I want to trigger an ECU error code. Any one will do, but the easier to generate the better. I'll disregard any suggestions like "remove engine"! I've fitted a Pete Betts DSC unit and currently have the dashboard off. I'd rather not unsolder the DSC joints (to trigger code 42) because my soldering is not good, and I've (eventually) got joints that are strong! The reason, if anyone's interested: I think my red triangle warning light in the rev counter dial doesn't work when the engine management warning light (orange engine icon, RHS of dashboard) comes on. The bulb is fine, because the red triangle never fails to illuminate when I apply the handbrake. When I had error code 42, the orange light would come on and stay on, but the red triangle (after a couple of weeks of having the error) didn't. It flickers on when I drive over "rumble strips" in the road. TIA

There's also a red UK in Basingstoke. Seen it parked outside a house, don't know the owner.

Red supra, Black Dam roundabout (near the motorway) in Basingstoke this morning at about 8.20am. Nice young lady driving it too! I was in an MSB supra a couple of cars behind at another entrance to the roundabout. Would have beeped if I'd thought about it.
  13. I've seen it. Apart from the operation bit (sorry if you haven't seen it already!), it wasn't great. I think the chap/freak/monster thing was one of the child experiments that went wrong. But that's only my guess.
  14. Yeah I like the look of the brushed chrome ones, but a bit beyond what I wanted to spend. BTW have you changed your dash colours?
  15. Black it is! Just bought myself a Pioneer DEH-4700MPB, not a top spec HU by any means, but it does what I want!
  16. Ah, sorry to hear that mate. [hijack over]
  17. [hijack] I guess your car is fixed now Jake? Last time I heard you had major engine problems.
  18. I think a lot of the LRO mag editions (every other one) have a buyer's guide, with years of all models along with price guides. Excellent resource. (I'm not on commission from LRO!)
  19. Like I said, check the bulkhead BTW, the Landy show in Malvern is on the bank holiday weekend at the end of August (w/e of 26th I think).
  20. There's another weekend-long one in August (the 18th?), at Malvern I think. That one's organised by LRO magazine. I might even see you there, Rosie!
  21. My girlfriend's dad is a landy buff. The V8s are very thirsty (and many owners go for a LPG conversion on them). Diesels are much better. Both the TDi and TD5 units are reckoned to be very good. Depends on the age and model, but an old-ish Defender 90 TDi would maybe give you 20-30 MPG (figure plucked out of air from what I've read in Land Rover Owner magazine). If you look at buying one, check the bulkhead carefully for rust, epsecially an old Series one. Glad you ditched the idea of an Amercian truck: can't stand them!
  22. That really sucks. Alex, couldn't agree with you more. I think it's very selfish. (the moaners, not you!)
  23. Don't mind shaving, as long as the collars and cuffs match :o
