New project - Datsun 240z

I would dip it, or there'll still be rust in the seams between spot welds. But interested to see how soda blasting goes, I have used it on carbon panels extensively and it's very gentle *IF* the operator takes his time and keeps the pressure down. It's also incredibly messy ;)

Pros and cons to both sides of it.... I have never liked dipping

Sound deadening has all been removed and the car has been blasted. Car is back at the workshop, radiator support and floor pans have been dropped off, now the work begins.

Unfortunately I didnt have time to take photos, I was late.... and the guy that normally takes pictures has been sick.

Hopefully should have some this week or next.

In a couple of days I am off on holiday to South Africa for 5 weeks, so will be no updates during that time - but hopefully lots of progress :)

Just my 2p but wouldn't it pay to take the whole skin off the doors.

Great project and look forward to the updates

the one is worse than the other, so was about 50/50 on the door with the worse damage

It's coming along now! Out of curiosity, what new panels are available for these nowadays? Could you buy new doors? Or front wings or rear quarter panels?

Its moving along :) I struggled to find decent parts... passenger front fenders are available, drivers side is not, the radiator support panel is a reproduction, floors were a reproduction, etc.... getting more difficult. Its one of the reasons for choosing the place I did, they deal more with cars that you cannot find the replacement panels for and make everything themselves.

Not sure on the rear quarters, fortunately mine were very clean so didnt look :)

This is going to look great when it's done, a car I have always wanted, such a cool shape.

Sounds like you are going all out on a propper job for this one and it will be well worth it when you get it back.

Thats the plan :) prices on these have been going up recently, since most of the really good ones dont get sold too often. I believe a rather special R432 edition recently sold for $253k

Really tempted to put off going single for a few years, and buy one of these to start working on. I'll have to get rid of my Corrado first though :D

Oh thats just not fair :( engine is a work of art!!! but so expensive

2.4l, webers and an exhaust will have to do for me :D

I like that idea, these are going up in value ;) well worth the investment

You'd also need a Giken close ratio box and diff. Plus some pretty special brakes and suspension to complete the setup. Mega money, but what a car that would be  I think I'd take one over a Hakosuka.

A decent manifold will make the stock engine sound lovely though.

Just found out that Giken head is $30k. :D Lovely, but IMO an Autech N/A RB26 would be far better VFM. That is what Rocky auto use, and the reason why the otherwise dreary automatic Autech R32 is worth so much.

Id rather save the money and have both ;)

I think you're right about the values climbing, with the way that E-Type prices have rocketed, people are looking for similar vintage cars with similar looks. And the great thing is that compared to an E-type, they cost peanuts to run, and are technically probably a much nicer drive.

And more reliable ;)

Also consider how the classic porsche and merc prices have gone throw the roof now.

Exactly. Mercedes Pagoda prices have shot up in recent years, some 280SL Pagodas are £100k+ now.

last 2 -3 years, they have gone through the roof

Both places doing work on my cars (the 240z and the escort) have pagodas in being rebuilt completely. 20-30k restore on a car that cost 15-20k and its worth over 100k. Some have gotten a good deal!

Engine is going to be very plain.... standard with carbs and an exhaust

The worry with the that much more power is the chassis, I just dont think it can handle it. 500hp is a lot! I think I would stick to the 350z engine, strong, lightweight and V layout gives much better weight distribution. Engine also has a lot of potential when supercharged or turbocharged ;)
