NA performance first impressions

ive had twin turbo supras since 2008 now and until now have never been in a normal 2jzge supra. a guy i know has one and its a lovely car, exhaust , really nice rims etc. so basically he took me out in it the other day and well i was sitting there thinking this thing is going to go well now :scared:, so we took off down the road and im honestly very shocked at how slow they are :yawn:, i really thought they'd be quicker than that, i think my old leon cupra 180bhp would have it no problem. TT supra really is in a different league/just a different car, just looks the same.

 

I have just recently bought a na auto targa top,and tbf I wansnt disappointed with it at all, all my mates love it and the bonus of the roof coming off we have been down the seafront all waxed and polished etc lol

It has go obviously it ain't the lightest of vehicles on the road but u sure don't see as many at all anymore she always get noticed :)

Yes I would love more bhp but tbh it would cost a bomb and I may do a few little mods to liven her up a bit but for now I am rather pleased with her.

Obviously going from a tt to a na course its going to be slow Lol but insurance on a na-t or a tt is a bit of push atm

The actual gap between a stock Jspec TT and a NA is not that large as you would expect it!!! :blink: not that large lol, you carnt compare an TT to NA. a TT even stock would abliterate an NA

In my opinion the NA is quite a fast car. Of course you can't compare it with the potential of a TT, but still.... it's fast. The actual gap between a stock Jspec TT and a NA is not that large as you would expect it. When you sit behind the wheel of the TT it's all about torque. - that creates this kinda "fast-car" feeling. And you certainly won't have that in a NA.

 

Concerning spirited driving chronicles...

Raced against a Audi TT ( 8J; 200 bhp 2,0 TFSI) straight line. That Audi didn't have any chance for example...

 

Of course comparing my NA with a stock NA would not be fair as my NA is not stock at all, but still NA. :)

(View my build thread including dyno results in the german supra owners forums; did a xerd header, mine's VX-Rom ecu, decat and installing a high flow cat, hand made exhaust system, TRD LSD, lightweight pulleys all around, ATI crank damper, a lot of new OEM parts etc...) by the way... I could also do a build thread here sometime if somebody's interested.

My project is known as the "NA_BPU"- Project in the german speaking area. I went on the track last weekend so there will also be some videos available soon.

My mechanic who is (the only) supra specialist down here said that he never heard a 2JZ sound that mean :)

 

For all the haters: Yes I could have converted it to NA_T or even TT for the silly money I've spent on this car. but: you will never be able to drive it legally down here due to austrian law.

Yes but the na is the one what gave the na-t and tt it's name!

drill the airbox and fit and ecotec valve and then were talking power.

 

thats abit too extreme mate, i wouldnt wanna make the fiesta faster than my supra

For reliability like this (my NA) I wouldn't want to swap for a NA-T or Single-T. That's just my opinion... everybody else is allowed to have a different opinion.

Last year at Suprapod I finished 0.7 behind a TT in my NA.

yeah, the NA just seem to rev but not go anywhere, again its not as if its not moving, it just moves effortless , what really suprised me when i first bought a TT is how quick the car moves and does not brake a sweat, the mk4 supra is an awesome car no matter how fast it goes, how many cars look as good as the jza80 even to this day.

i agree. i like power but as a reliable usable road car the na is an exelecnt vehicle, and they ar far from slow

 

I don't usualy comment when na bashing is goin on however people have mentioned cost, I can afford a twin/single turbo supra however I chose an na. Granted its not as quick as a turbo BUT I've had turbo cars before and was sick to death of problems. I nail my car to death, it's never ever gone wrong in 8 years of ownership. I've lost count of the times ive nailed to a trackday and had sessions stopped for broken down evos, scoobys and turbo supras on 2 occasions then I nail home with zero issues. Power is down yes, do I want a car I cant abuse without annoying issues? For me no.

I'd be very interested in a build thread and some videos of the noise. I really want to keep the Supra as a daily but just thinking of manning up and going TT-BPU when ive got the money but the NA just has never given me any problems

no NA bashing here, just saying my first experience in an NA what not what i expected. i also have had many turbos, TT, 200sx, 20valve vag engine cars, none have gave me any issues, Ever. in fact my 200sx s14a had 120000miles on it and ran 1 bar for 3 years, strong as an ox, i do like to look after my cars and so i use the loud peddle in moderation and not nail my car to death as you put it. maybe your cars are breaking because you are nailing them to death.

I would say the stock RZ is super reliable as well, I've never had to retire from a track day and always drive home after. Also straight line speed is only one aspect, the driver is much more important, on track days you often see 'slower' cars passing cars that are faster on paper.

Not at all, I drive hard but I also service my cars and look after them as much as I can no matter what The cost.I've just got to a point where reliability is more important to me than performance. My na runs 14.3's and I'm more than happy with that.

Last year at Suprapod I finished 0.7 behind a TT in my NA.

 

maybe the TT driver wasint trying ;)

 

Exactly, although they are slow in comparison, some TT's were in the 14's at SantaPod... As we're some NA's. ;)

 

To be honest I was really SHOCKED when I got out of my TT & when into my friends BMW 320, felt really slow... :sly:
