Well chuffed :) this new panel works out 82% lighter then the aluminum panel its replacing... and its very ... very strong.

Once all aluminum panels/brackets/parts have been replaced with carbon we will be looking at a massive saving moving forward... more to follow.

You'll be making a vacuumed carbon tub next! :) Nice work!

Cheers Chris :)

I am also in the middle of building a PID controlled post curing composites oven so I can increase the working temp of the carbon panels/parts as some of them will get near very hot items.

Once all the flat panels have been replaced I will be also be making full carbon doors & wings (none of this fiberglass backed stuff) maybe even attempt a bonnet (We will see as these are hard).

Very nice matey

Cheers mate :)

I would say a bonnet is easy compared to a full door in carbon. As my neighbour is an ex McLaren composites guy who now works from home on all manner of exotica, I tend to just throw him some money. I did attempt some carbon vac work, but you obviously have MUCH more patience than I have :)

Yeah possibly, I suppose it depends on the bonnet, I was thinking directly in relation to my bonnet with the big center vent for the V-Mount. Could prove to be a bit tricky, although saying that there are a few ways around tricky bits :) a Standard supra bonnet, or any standard bonnet with no cutouts etc will be as easy as doing flat panels.

With regards patience, I am not usually one for it... it is frustrating to wait for 36/48 hours to get to the point of demoulding

You can cure quicker than this by using a faster catalyst but then you run the risk of the resin becoming unusable for infusion after about 15 mins, this is OK on small parts but for large infusions its a no go...

This is one of the reasons I am building an oven, not only will it make the carbon part more temperature stable, it will also cut curing time to around 6-8 hours, which is FAR more reasonable.

Just realized I never put up a picture of what the results were.

Pretty happy with the results so far :D

This weighs 525 grams (untrimmed), whereas the panel its replacing weighs 1.2kg

Sorry if you've explained previously, but what sort of resin mix do you use? I've used surfboard stuff in the past but most of the parts I've attempted have gone Pete Tong, yours look amazing. I've seem some epic uv reactive resin in the States that only takes 30 seconds to cure as soon as it is exposed to sunlight

I use specific low viscosity Infusion resin and a slow reacting catalyst. It has to be slow as it can take a while to infuse the resin into the part and the resin has to be useable for more than an hour in some cases, If you use a fast catalyst then you have a useable time of around 15 mins which is ok for small parts but no good for large items.

It takes up to 24 hours to cure enough to demould in normal temps, but up to 7 days to fully harden.

I am building an oven which will fully cure and harden the resin between 3-6 hours (100'c/60'c) which will be nice.
