  1. I agree that anyone who knows the "breed" would know if a car was "clocked", my car i have owned from new and has all MOT's etc, 42,000 miles and even Stevie Wonder" can see it is kosheir. When you buy a car if you look closely at it's history and weigh up the current owner, this will put you 90% nearer to knowing if the car has been "clocked". Let's face it if a car has done 40k miles and another has done 140k miles, then it's a "no brainer", the wear signs are so obviouse, i won't list them as there are so many. I would also say that the 20 year old cars were more prone to show wear and tear than current cars with higher spec moving parts and cosmetics, also cars which come from lease hire can put 100k miles on and be clocked down to 50k miles and no one is the wiser, this does not apply to a 20 year old classic like the supras, however the supra IMHO was way ahead of its time in looks and performance and the engines are bomb proof. They are now a good investment.
  2. 11987078_1632854480308032_716917358447522141_n.jpg (115.4 KB) Hi Guys, The "Doctor" (Fred), lol, tells you what he is going to do and then you get pics of the operation, nice to see my car "on top", reg: IJ-18282, (see pic), how cool is that, this boosts your anticipation and adds extra enjoyment to some thing you have been wanting to do for many years. It's better value than new boobs for the better half. lol. Nice to see stuff today that "does what it says on the tin".
  3. Many thanks Evinx, The link told me what i did not want to know, lol, can you believe £280 for a valve, will make an extra effort now on fixing it, however cleaning is about all one can do, and if it does not work it is the transfer chip which is faulty, so may have to "bite the bullet" or look at breakers. ? It is not just the nuisence of the valve playing up tick over varying from 1,000 rpm to just holding on at 400 rpm, it can be dangerouse when the engine cuts completely, no power steering and little or no braking power. 11987078_1632854480308032_716917358447522141_n.jpg (115.4 KB)
  4. My NA has covered 42,000 miles from when i bought it new, so no rebuild required, also i have researched this subject over the past months and IMHO the most important thing as with everything else is to go to an expert with a good CV, with lots of examples and experience. Also i would have to accept that the original tt's are much more robust than a NA/T, but the expensive bit below the cylinder head is the same as the NA's. If you drive the lump well and only thrash it where required then the NA/t is a "no brainer" for me, bit like looking after your wife / partner. Mine is in surgery at the "doctors" (Fred), and each day i look forward to it's coming home. My brother bought a tt at the same time as i bought mine, brand new, he has only 39,000 miles on it, but post NA?T and mine being a manual as well, then it will be interesting, it's all good fun for habitual petrol heads. herbiemercman.
  5. I have four cars, a big merc, e-300 td, this has to be auto with kick down, long journeys in heavy traffic, a Corsa sport. 1.4 auto, wife's car and a Hyundai sports coupe auto, My Supra Mk4 is manual with a limited slip disff axle, this means you can spin the wheels and power out of bends etc and you are controlling the power delivery, not a hydro auoto usa market box. My friends always frown on LHD sports cars and auto's, they call them hair dressers cars. Not saying i agree and if you prefer the auto sports cars then it's ok. To me the actual "driving" of a sports car is a big part of the joy of owning one, let's face it most of us have them as a weekend toy and the hardcore driving is king, you are not just getting from a to b in heavy traffic where i agree the autos are king. At the TT races at the Isle of Man which i have been involved with, the electric bikes are being introduced from the USA, they have no gear changes, no exhaust noise, and when they are racing we all go to the pub. I have watched the NA/T's on youtube and the exhaust sound on a manual with gear changes at the right rpm are awesome, the autos just cannot do it for me. It's every one to their own, you pay your money and you take your choice. My brother bought his tt auto new and i bought my na at the same time from new, when i get my NA/T conversion from the doctor, my brother, for the first time in 18 years, will be blown off. lol.
  6. Most members on here know who the "Doctor" is and i now realise i should have called him Fred.lol.
  7. Hi Shane, I have a friend who runs VO and he has contacts for getting hold of it FOC, he also preheats it with a heatexchange matrix from the engine cooling water system, this stops "waxing" in winter months. I could not be arsed with all the messing even if i got the stuff for free. My bus is fed with three quarters of a litre of my own fuel performance mix, it is basically 50% standard 2T oil and 50% cetane, this gives quieter much smoother running, lubrication for the fuel pump, injectors and valve gear etc, the current diesel fuel has all the sulphur lubricants removed due to EEC rules and the "green" loby in the UK, I also get 4 to 5mpg more which is 80 miles on an 18 gallon tank. The car is fast enough for me with a cruise of 100mph and a top end of 130mph, i use it for long journeys with my trekking friends, and let's face it you can rarely get moving on most M/Ways now due to congestion. When i get my NA/T back, which basically replaces all the fast bikes i have had, i will have the odd blast before the day comes with technology where all speeding will be detected.
  8. Nice one Chris, you know me so well.lol. The doctor said he respected your vast knowledge and would like meet you some day.
  9. Hi Shane, The merc is 19 years old i bought it new in 1997, i have put 230,000 miles on her, done most of the service and repairs myself. The turbo blades erode, bit like shot blasting, not much may be just 1mm but the difference in boost is amazing. The fall off in boost happens so slowly over the years you don't really notice it until you put a new one on. It's a 7 seat est, e-300 td ellegance with AMG spec, circa 230 bhp, it will hit 130mph and cruise all day on a "oner", lovely smooth car, worth nothing now, BUT worth a lot to me. WORSTON. 10. Yeh, Took her down on Tuesday, *edited to remove traders name* has a good set up, first question i asked him was would the power delivery post NA/T be as smooth as my drive down from Preston to Cardiff, he said it will be the same until you put your foot down, it will spool at circa 1,850 rpm and then the power just keeps coming. He is fitting me an oil temp gauge and a boost gauge and fixing my speedo which stopped working two weeks back. He asked me did i want both CATS removed i said ok just hoping it will pass the MOT, he thinks it will. I have the stainless steel exhaust but kept the stock rear silencer as this looks neat and gives a good burbling sound, He said it would handle the extra power mass flow. he delivered me to Cardiff Central station and spent the twenty minutes driving my NA, he said it was "tight" and in great nick for 1996 car, he also explained the technicalities of his conversion, and at his unit showed me the t71 turbo, much bigger than i thought, 30% bigger than the turbo i just changed on my e-300 td merc. Good day out and good train ride back to Preston.
  11. I had this same problem, had to grind little slots in the bottom pozi screw to remove it. I gave the valve a good cleaning and it was ok for a few months, but ocasionaly it starts hunting again, some times the engine cuts out completely and you loose all power steering and brake assistance, real balls ache, not sure how much a replacement valve costs.?
  12. what is 2K paint.? and is it a DIY product.?
  13. Hi Chris i know you are the wrong side of 35 like me but it is great to help the uninitiated, mostly for nowt.
  14. Hi Chris, I was fascinated re your comment about the engine in question being a "non interference" type, does the same thing apply to the NA, 2jz-ge engines.? I ask this as many owners are always concerned about their timing belt failing and costing them a new engine.
  15. Very positive answers in the main, from my contact with "the doctor" i am very confident and looking forward to the conversion, also never been to cardiff before and not been on a train to preston for many years. I have also never left my "baby" with anyone for two weeks after nineteen years of owning her. I hope she enjoys the major operation, bit like a stunning girlfriend getting new boobs, similar cost. Just a different test drive. lol.
  16. Hi Dudes, I will not be changing my mind on my imminent NA?T conversion but i was just curious what you lot think about the post conversion car value.? My opinion is that if i was looking for a car with the NA?T conversion, the most important thing would be getting to know the owner and see what the car's history is, for example, if i decided to sell my car and start wearing a Val Doonican sweater and smoking a pipe, and put my 42,000 mile from new car up for sale, 5 speed manual, and , mint, then i would expect to get the rarety value and browny points for the NA/T. So IMHO it would enhance the value, it certainly would not reduce it.? If any of you cannot remember who Val Doonican was, it shows your youth, he was an Irish folk singer who wore big knitted sweaters and big slippers, smoked a pipe and sent you to sleep when he sang, had a good voice for people in nursing homes, etc. What do you think, about the car value, NOT Val Doonican.
  17. Your all "On It", great club this, most people think we are"dick heads" with fast cars, just look when you are out and about, many cannot look at your supra, may be they are jellouse,? or may be they think we have not so good "party pieces", either way they don't know what they are missing. At my local my car gets as much or more attention than the £70k + stuff, jags, mercs, etc. Also a supra pulling away from start sounds awsome, roll on NA/T.
  18. Hi Guys, I appreciate all your help and advice, especially "scooter." Towards the end of august or early september i will tell you what my NA?T feels like. Lets face it,risk is part of our lives, some of you may laugh at what i am going to say, as what happened would be before your time, Irvin and mallory summited everest in1924, with woolen trousers and hob nail boots etc, even today the jury is still out on, did they do it.? I think they did, fantastic balls out brit effort, mallorie's body was found on the north face by a usa party, who set out to find their boddies, after 75 years. Forgive me for being so mellow dramatic, but it puts me risking my w58 into proportion, if you are a "petrol head" and love speed, you take risks all the time. I am at a mid life situation now and i just have to upgrade my machine and the risk is just money, I still appreciate all your advise, but you all know there are some things you have to do. Wish me luck. herbiemercman.
  19. Hi Dudes, Got my return train ticket now from Cardiff to Preston, sort of mid to late august. I have been driving 220 bhp for 19 years on my wheels so hard to imagine what the 380 to 400 bhp will be like, "bring it on", all be it i don't hammer my cars, just like to have the power when required. The doctor is really "on it" and has answered all my concerns very knowlegably, he has the experience, and talking to him gives you confidence. He is sorting my speedo / speed limiter / km to mph converter, it stopped working last week.? and fitting a boost gauge and oil temp gauge, neither of the gauges are that necessary but i will enjoy having this information. I asked him about spark plugs temp spec and engine oil fully synth, etc, he said we sort all that. He points out that once he has had the conversion mapped and tested i must not interfere with this, no prob. He has my car for two weeks, first week the work and second week for in depth testing and dyno / fueling / mapping. can't be bad. I must admit i am not sure about the actual components being employed, but he knows what is FFP (fit for purpose), and gives a 12 months guarantee. My brother has a stock auto tt jap spec, we bought them new at the same time, any predictions out there on how they will compare.?
  20. Hey Dudes, I just did "wet and dry" as per what they do with paint spraying, start with the coarse and end with the very fine, then "T-Cut" and just rub up by hand, then three coats of acrylic laquer, they look as new.
  21. Hi Style, Many thanks for a good technical reply. I have had my NA from new 20 years back and it is only now, prior to my impending NA/T conversion with Dr Jekyll in Cardiff that i have taken such a deep interest in these cars, this is a great club with great members.
  22. Hi Guys, an interesting thread but struggling with what some of the componets are.? Ignitor pack.? Wideband. ? Also does the NA's have the coil packs.? if no, then why.?
