  1. If it has known issues, it will mean mild rebuild at very least for peace of mind. This shouldn't cost a great deal more than a 2nd hand motor (which COULD have similar problems anyway), if you stick to a budget and don't go crazy. VVTi motors are 99% identical to non-VVTi, so rebuilding won't require more expertise or expense. Unless you are really keen to learn, or it's really a steal... I'd keep well clear, as it sounds like a headache. edited: wires crossed
  2. Just noticed this thread - and after checking to see that I can get a train somewhere near, I am IN. Look forward to seeing some Poopras on the dyno again Andrew
  3. You can buy a replacement silencer from MVP Motorsports in the States. IIRC, it's about 60 USD + shipping. Remember to bolt it in SECURELY if you buy it - I lost mine through carelessly undertightening it. As Homer has stated, it does drone but mostly around 2.5-3k RPM. If you're driving faster than 70 mph, the drone will be much less noticeable.
  4. Well, I didn't want to assume anything! Thanks for the offer! I would have my girlfriend with me (which is why I was looking for the alternatives to Supra backseats ) if that wouldn't be an issue for you or her
  5. I'm very keen to get out there and see the local offerings - but I live in East London and (as I've already whinged ) don't have a car. How easy is it to get to Santa Pod using public transport? Would I have to hire a car? edit: have searched, and the closest I can come to the race track is Hinwick. Is there a bus from Milton Keynes or Bedford that I've missed?
  6. Hope your wrap coating spray doesn't burn off like mine did (although I think it was an engine enamel, so prob only 6-800 degrees worth)! I was kicking myself when I discovered that you can buy exhaust wrap in black!!! Looks good though
  7. I'm guessing it was yours that I spotted last time in Bethnal as well.. nice and neat example
  8. Chassis designation is JZA80 - as seen on your VIN.
  9. Drove past me while I was walking home from the gym.. yes, I had a good Captain Cook at your Supe
  10. Very impressive work and attention to detail! Can't say I'm a fan of the blister guards or the rear wing, but the end product is certainly unique - and if you're happy, it really doesn't matter what others think
  11. this is looking fantastic! I have always wondered what our cars would look like with a subtly massaged out rear guard (but keeping the stock lines).. so it looks like I'm going to get my wish. Excellent work
  12. But yeah, if you can post up their average earnings for comparative purposes... that would be great, supra_aero
  13. Most people I've spoken to so far have been pretty unsympathetic - mostly because, as was quite rightly pointed out, the economic climate is pretty bleak for many so to strike for a 5% minimum pay rise seems ridiculous.
  14. Sorry, you fellas don't get my point. I would love an aerotop, but the facts are they DON'T sell as well as 6 speeds and the reasons are *usually* those stated. EDIT: reading everyone else's "opinions", I'll leave you all to agree with yourselves. Good luck selling the car for your price
  15. Ok.. you clearly didn't read the graph properly - that says 620 KILOWATT. 800+ in the old money. And if I end up bringing the car over you're more than welcome to stump up the cash to put it on the dyno - I'll be proving it with MPH at the strip. As to auto vs 6 speed - that IS the crux of the argument! GZ is auto, RZ is 6 speed - 6 speed is the driver's car, the auto GZ is the luxo-spec version (for god's sake, it has cruise control standard!). Which, coupled with the reduced torsional rigidity of the aero, means the GZ is less suitable for driving hard and therefore considered less desirable.
  16. Thanks for your opinion, however ill-informed. I was answering why a 6 speed car is worth more than an auto. And to be honest, I have many other friends (besides my own 800 bhp car) running 550+ hp that worry about their diffs on semislicks. There are many many people who are a turbo and fuel system away from 500+ bhp, and I'm the idiot for worrying about what that will do to a small diff when launching on semislicks? Give me a break.
  17. Try saying that on semislicks and 800 bhp while it might be quicker on a drag strip, it won't attract a track driver. And we're talking about why it won't sell, not personal preference..
  18. Simple facts are: * most people who buy turbo Supras buy them to drive hard * aero Supras are 99% auto (not really desirable for a driver's car), and as an added bonus have a smaller diff than a 6 speed. * aeros are less torsionally stiff (not really desirable for a driver's car) All these add up to being less desirable, therefore less valuable, than a comparable 6 speed. Hope this helps.
  19. Looking good! Always like to see another VVTi build (mine is GT42R making 830 whp) Are you planning to hybridise the turbos to Stu Hagen-spec? And please tell me you're going to either paint or polish that throttle body
  20. Even the owner isn't sure - they were there from original import from Japan. Some kind of high-tech reason (such as a TV, as The Raven suggested) would be the logical conclusion.
  21. +1, especially if you've got additional body styling changes to make. Liking what you've achieved to date, though - but (typical Supra owner pickiness ) the bonnet gap on your front bar is slightly out of wack, so you might consider fixing that.
  22. Guys, while I haven't been here for a great length of time, I have friends here who have bought or who are still looking for a QUALITY 6 speed locally for a decent price. Most seem to be in the vicinity of £6-8k and have 100+k miles. The vehicle in question has essentially an entirely new parts catalogue in many areas, on a relatively low mileage straight chassis. While it will cost probably £15k to import, I think if you add up the cost of all the new bits + labour on top of the asking price of a local vehicle you'll find this price is very competitive. Completel agree - and to be honest, if I didn't want to live in debt again, I would buy this. The ONLY thing this vehicle doesn't have in its favour is the lack of optional factory bodykit. Not sure what the local prices from Toyota are, but in Australia they are very expensive for genuine replacements (even if sourced through Japan / US / Hong Kong) - so I would anticipate it costing about £10k to buy that parts list here.
  23. Now, I am *not* the owner of this car, nor is this a For Sale thread - but it seems a shame that some of you over here in Blighty are looking for good cars but can't find them....... so I thought I might throw an Australian car into the mix for those who like thinking outside the box. http://www.supraforums.com.au/forum/showthread.php?t=51740 Cliffs: great car (low mile 6 speed BPU, lots of new stock parts, motivated seller) but in Australia.
  24. Heard you (then looked - old habits die hard ;p) heading off over the bridge from the lights on Silvertown Way in Newham as I walked out of Canning Town tube station around 20.00 tonight... Sounded nice, so I wanted to thank you for reminding me how much I miss my car. Bastard!
