TT Aero Progress Thread

So it's been a little slow just because life has got in the way but we have a little progress.

Car is now back from having some touch-ups done at the bodyshop so we are full steam ahead.

Put the rear trims back on.

The Weekend just gone I planned to fit a switch for the Aerial like i have on my white car. The problem is that this car has the factory amp so there is two feeds to the aerial. (i think) Which means that using the switch powered the amp on and off (which in turn made the aerial go up and down). I managed to find the separate feed to place a switch which works when pushing the button (i.e. brings it up by making it live) but when turning off the switch the aerial doesn't come down. The only way it comes down is by turning off the headunit (cuts the live feed i guess), leaving the switch in the off position and turning back on to keep it down. I wont really use the aerial anyway so i'll just leave the switch in the off position. 

Below (along with the switch) there is now DAB, FM, Mic, USB connection and a brand new Pioneer SPH-DA230DAB. I also wired in the reverse camera to come on when i put the car into reverse. Don't worry i cleaned up all the wires so they're nice and neat.

The dash panels were in a bad way but i used water and a magic sponge on them and they cleaned up really nice.

First time having a complete interior since i took it apart back in May. I have plans to get a new 3 spoke wheel with cruise (from Europe or USA) eventually. Re-trim the gear shifter and handbrake too. But right now that will do. I do also have some Pure Sport mats bought from Peter P to put in. (oh and the ashtray light was blown so i have some 286 bulbs on order)

I'm really happy with how cleaning the interior up and dying the carpet, changing the headlining and visors etc has really changed the car. It feels a lot more sleek and sporty. 

Here is a before photo of it you can see the extent of which it's changed. I also sprayed the speaker covers black which made a big difference.

Managed to wire up new Side repeaters as they were replaced with some aftermarket ones which didn't look great.

Fitted and routed the washer jets.

Only thing irritating me at the moment is that the seal around the windscreen at the top has dropped slightly which means it doesn't sit flush over the top line. But i think that's just me being an*l.

 

So.. left on the to do list for the next few weeks.

- Make and Fit TRD Rain Guards for the bonnet. Can't decide whether to make them out of black ABS or Carbon Fibre

- Fit rear section of the wheel arch.

- Fit the bonnet Aerocatches

- Fit SRD 4" FMIC

- Fit Gearbox Cooler (This i need to look into, as the car is currently stock i do not want the oil to not get upto correct operating temp)

- Fit SRD Cooling plate

- Oil & Filter Change

- Spark Plug Change

- Diff Oil + Filter Change

- Full Transmission Flush

- Fit New AC Condenser (maybe)

- Brake Fluid Change

- Wire up front Indicators

- Fit front Bumper

- Fit Front Wheel Arch and Undertray

- Fit New Wheels

- Polish and Ceramic Coat Facelift Headlights

 

Then hopefully onto SRD for some bits to be done and MOT.

Had a couple hours spare yesterday managed to get some bits done. 
 

Oil and Filter done ✅ it Took 5 ltrs so which I think is normal? Dipstick read over full but need to run the car and double check it.

Diff oil changed. Need to clean up that disgusting rusty diff so that’s on the to-do list now.

Replaced the spark plugs for Heat range 6 iridiums. As careful as I was the coil pack connectors still broke so SRD sending me some new ones. Also got new breather hoses.

Got my new mesh for the bonnet and Aero catches fitted.

Still waiting on the AC condenser so I can get the other bits finished but USA keep pushing the date back, so will try get the Auto gearbox flush done and brake fluid done while I wait. Also need to swap the wheels over. 
 

annoyingly the backup camera has started to cause a high pitch whine through the rear speaker while it’s in use, it’s unbearable so not sure really what’s caused it. I spoke to Noz about it earlier and he suggested a ferrite core so hopefully that will sort it.

Feel like I’m close yet so far on it, just Hope I can get out in it this summer.

Nice progress, I'm hoping it'll all fall into line for you sooner rather than later to get it over the line. Good oil choice, I chose the same in 5w-40 for the TT. It took around 5L too (still using the smaller OE Supra oil filter), the NA wants closer to 5.5 with the bigger V8 filter.

Had a bit of time over the weekend to do a few bits. Got fed up of waiting for the AC condenser. 

Firstly I fit an Autobox cooler to run in line with the stock cooler. I’m going to purchase a drain plug that takes a 1/8” NPT temperature sensor and run a gauge to the car to keep an eye on trans temps.

Got bored and decided to clean up a little more of the underside including the diff. I used Hammerite Kurust, then Hammerite underseal with Waxoyl. It only lasts a couple years but can keep an eye on it every so often that way.

Really happy with how it turned out. Not a lot left to do before it goes to SRD now. It’s the niggly bits like arch liners, undertrays, wiring up front sidelights etc.

Thanks mate, I’ve definitely got carried way with this one. I’m about double over what I wanted to spend on it but hey ho, it’s been fun doing it.

to be honest I also hate wiring but I’ve had a couple shocks from mains in houses before so a little 12v battery is nothing 🤣

As I’m ill in bed I thought I’d throw some updates around. Now the IC is fit I thought I’d smash out some jobs. I managed to wire up the facelift sidelights. Rather than solder them I actually put them on a clip so they can be removed if required. 
 

After that I thought great, let’s get the front bumper on, only to find it won’t fit over the intercooler. Which is a real pain as I’ve now got to carefully trim it back without causing any damage. 
 

In the meantime I purchased some UK brakes from Lee Hanlon (great bloke btw!) which had just been sprayed but needed rebuilding. Unfortunately the pistons were shot so decided to replace the lot. I must admit without @blythmrkkeeping me in good spirits throughout I think I would have thrown them out the window. A broken nail bed and multiple blisters later I finally got them back together. 

i didn’t go for big red but I went for brakesint kit off eBay. Will I regret that, probably? But that will be a headache for future me.

My brass oil drain plug bung arrived for connecting a gearbox temp sensor too then I saw a little sense, took advice of the forum and have bought a Mild Steel bung to weld into the side of the pan, that will create a nice pathway up the tunnel and into the car.

I was looking at AEM Gauges but although they’re amazing I didn’t want to fork out over £200 for one so went with an old School GReddy one with peak and warning. Hopefully that will arrive by the weekend and I can route it through and wire it up ready to plug it in.  Any suggestions on where to mount it? I don’t fancy taking Dash panel off again.

Anyway, busy weekend coming up but hope to get the new brakes fitted and attempt to trim bumper.

Hi mate,

Sorry to hear you’re ill, hope you feel better soon. Shame the brakes were shot, but glad you are powering on. Gauge wise you have the obvious options as I spotted the gauge you already run on the steering wheel cowling. 
 

- 3D print or find a gauge holder to make that a dual holder so both can go on the steering wheel cowling.

- Upper glovebox on passenger side pod. HKS did one that can fit here and has 3 slots plus two square slots for turbo timer etc. 

- drivers side A pillar gauge pod.

- Air vent replacement pod.

- Clock replacement pod.

Also depends if you want them on show or hidden as could do something with centre console or even inside upper glovebox but most people want to see the gauges which I get.

Whifbitz have a few options including carbon fibre so maybe check those out and see what you prefer. 👍

Hi All - been a few little updates since.

Firstly i mounted the gauge . I looked at a number of suggestions above but thought i'd stick it to the left of the console. It's a marmite location but at least it's in full view and now i can keep an eye on the gearbox temp. I ran the wire straight back through the glovebox so only about 2" of wire on view and then down through the centre console. I looked at using a sensor in the drain plug (hung too low) then thinking if drilling a hole in the sump to accommodate but the sensor was too long it would foul. So i ran the sensor wire along the gearbox flow line and just before the radiator i placed the sensor. In theory this should give me a relatively accurate reading on the oil as it comes out the box. (big thanks to Delboy with all the questions i had)

Then i drained the gearbox Oil - removed the sump, re-torqued all the bolts and changed the strainer and O ring on filler tube.

Then it was onto the brakes.. As i was fitting UK brakes the shield had to be cut away in order for them to fit. Again, useful multi tool.

Then the fronts. Don't worry i swapped the disc onto the correct side afterwards. This was just for photo.

Then was to bleed the brakes. The fluid was not good so i'm glad i changed it.

After this i tried to fit my bumper again, only to realise it was fouling on the new intercooler. After speaking with a couple of people the only way to make it fit was to cut it. Considering i've had it repaired twice at a costly sum i was a bit apprehensive. So did some research, used a oscillating multi tool and was able to get cut nicely. Got the old man out of bed for this one as i was feeling rough.

And.. disaster struck... the bumper cracked 😠... again..

As above - i'd already paid to have it repaired in different places multiple times and i just couldn't face spending more £ on it - and being a*al i thought i'd attempt it myself.

As you can see it came out rather crap - so another couple hours on youtube i attempted something different.

And again.. poor colour matching.. back to the drawing board. A couple more hours on youtube.

The colour was a little better this time but as highlighted you could see i started and finished.. Not one to be defeated i went back to the drawing board again. 

 

This time i went and got some proper paint mixed up to match the shade, scuffed the bumper with grey scotch and P1000 trizact, purchased some 2k lacquer and also some fade out thinners. And i'm very happy with the result. It's blended beautifully. I did flat and polish it a bit but i wanted to get some other bits done so didn't go too aggressive. Before people ask, i didn't want to remove the bumper again as it was such a pain to get it to fit nicely. Otherwise i would have just removed it and painted the whole thing.

After that was to put the sidelights back in, wire them up to the new (used) facelift headlights and pop them in place.

At this point i also fit the coolant overflow reservoir by the battery. Put the airbox back in, and fit SRD cooling panel and rubber bumper strip.

Then i gave the headlights a polish and cermic coat.

Then lastly i fit the undertray. These things are such a pain in the backside, especially with aftermarket bumper, but managed to get most of the nuts done up. I do have a better condition one somewhere that i will fit but can't find it.

Just waiting for the green light from SRD now to take it there for a couple bits and MOT.  Then when i get it back will fit some Neons for a bit of NFS Chavvyness and just enjoy it for a bit. It hasn't been without a lot of stress and sleepless nights (sad i know) but hopefully we are over the bigger hurdles.

That bumper is jokes. Wonder how long before you're painting it again.

Did you screw that dash. Or just stick it.

If you're bored you could always make a sensor alarm module rather than hope you can watch a gauge while full boosting round corners.

Wheels look lovely. Way better than the oem turds.

Stuck it mate, no screws

It does have an accessory wire which you can wire up to an alarm or beep but i didn't want to feel like i was back in a bmw

Yeah who wants a beeping sensor. Better it stay in an alert state. Then at least you feel cool in a Toyota even though the trans is near death.

Agree though be horrible having a BMW feeling when driving a Supra.

Precautionary measure and paranoia more than anything really mate. I'm running an autobox cooler now and just reading through various threads people have mentioned that it can make the oil too cool. Wanted to use it as a way of ensuring it's not running too cool at the moment. If it shows on the lower side i'll disconnect the autobox cooler until i up the power. Seeing as i was doing a full flush of the gearbox oil + strainer i thought i may as well chuck a sensor in. If i knew i was going to put it on the flow line i probably wouldn't have bothered fitting it yet.

Cheers man! Given the choice to re-do I would probably stick with stock body just because of how much grief it’s given me and the added cost. But the whole aftermarket supra is what got me interested in them in the first place so would be kicking myself if I didn’t try it.  Just hope I made the right decision staying silver.

OEM is being done to death. You made the right choice.
