Nic, i've also got a fairly large FMIC on mine, and the way the previous owner got round overheating was to change the rad for a large (custom) ali version and fit a pair of suplimentary electric fans as well as the plate you mentioned. I can't tell from your pic if the bonnet is standard. Obviously UK weather is a tad cooler, but i've never had any kind of heating problems with mine even on hard track days.
-
Yeah use the glass policy on your insurance. Doesn't affect your NCB or anything like that. If you don't have one (how?) the front screen is about £750. If they can repair it then that would be a better option, as not only does it not cost anything the factory fit screen will always be better than a replacment.
-
Mine has two rear braces, the front one, and half a roll cage. And I can't say I can tell the difference between it and a stock one... I really think they're just for show. Not that I know what to look for But as Gavin pointed out, it'd probably help a targa one a lot more. As they definatly are noticably worse than the hard tops.
-
Strangly I think i'd say that there's a difference between the two. Tha NA auto didn't clunk and was very smooth, where as the turbo one is definatly clunky when cold. But i'd presume the difference in the high speed gear changes is the difference in power

Ah ha, cheers you've just solved why mine displayed a constant RPM! I'll have to go play with it now. It's not just AFR's it seems if there's any device close on the RPM wire it 'defaults' to 1900 RPM. Mine didn't cut the engine, but I got one hell of a misfire for a bit. Matt Harwood suggested for me that tapping it from the back of the rpm guage could be another way of getting the rpm. Looks like the RLTC might have to be moved to that. Thats not going to be pretty, though.

Alex, I think Pete Betts had a similar thing happen with his - and that turned out to be the water pump, and IIRC Chris Wilson thought that was becoming a point of failure on the older MKIV's You can get it changed when you do the cam belt and save on paying the labour twice... oops already done that. I'm pretty sure the head gaskets are a very uncommon fault on MKIV's (as you probably know), the two known cases having been caused by other problems. So wouldn't worry about that. And we've got a really good barbie spare, should have asked... saved some money towards that engine rebuild

Ha ha, i'll learn this all eventually... one mistake at a time. Just thought of it regards to IanC's mod level. Since his turbos are considerably more powerful and they ran at a highish boost on the stock system, it's destruction probably being related to the FSE valve... So by GD logic that ment Stock+FSE = plenty of botched power. I think i'd take a TDI chart with a grain of salt. I just can't remember where the earliest point of failure is, the pump or the injectors.
-
Alex, your car will end up with and engine build one way or another... so don't worry about it I think the cheap lame way to do it is with an FSE valve, they're pretty cheap really - and if you don't mind a both rather than a fix a good way to go. I think the equations for working out pump capacity are pretty simple, and i've seen them posted here before. Might be worth a search? I think the stock j-specs really aren't good for over 1.2.

My exhaust looks straight like that, no idea what the differences are between the normal one and the race one though... And unfortionatly it's still fairly easy to ground it :( Don't have a baffle for it though (I think?!), dam if I could make it louder without a baffle it would sound like the coming of the apocalyse

I lost a tire on the way back from JIC (the first supe), and they'd 'neglected' to give me the locking wheel nut key. Got out the local recovery service and they easily removed the locking nut (however as far as 'locking' nuts go these were dire). So maybe if you're an AA/Rac/etc. member they'll fix it? This must happen to people so often there must be a fairly simple solution. If not grab your welding kit and weld a bar to it and remove it that way OT : As a side note as I was walking to the local newsagent from work last week in the glorious sunshine a xantia thing when between one of those traffic calming (road narrows) gates it hit some debris and managed to lose two tyres. As I was walking back they'd got the local tyre guy out ('luckily' only 200 metres down the road), and he was talking to them about the tyres saying they needed some 'Michelin ZR 18's' when the car had stock wheels on it. By the time i'd realised what was happening I was back at the office and too lazy to go back and see if they were still there. Sounded like a bit of a rip off to me...
-
Bleedin heck (pun intended), took your time to tell us about that one... So where would you usally get the said device? And why have I not seen one before?
-
That cheap... i'll have two I ment us norms as in, non-car peps. You could have ment 'pretty expensive' in car development terms... Ha ha, if your Beer costs are anywhere near as much as your car costs... *shudder*
-
Just to stop us guessing? What's "pretty expensive" to us norms? Looks like it's definatly the way to go for any serious testing. Bar the engine out stuff...
-
Don't worry nothings changed... Technically speaking it's not a BOV for an NA, it's a speaker that sounds like a BOV for a TT.
-
Ha, I was just going on what someone told me, wasn't option themselves. Guess he didn't know there were two types of Mines ECU (just like me). Ho hum, guess i'd better hope that AEM's one turns up then.

Ha ha, that's funny. If a bit Max Power...

May as well post this to keep the thread at least consistent if not entirely off topic... There is a sweet nothing you can do about someone publishing "your" IP i'm afriad they're actually publically owned (ish). Now if he'd published personal information (which he hasn't) THEN you could do what you fealt like. I don't recall what the disclaimer when you register says... IP's aren't, and never have been personal property on ANY level, by their very nature they're exceptionally public. The threat of 'hacking' is open to all of us, and hinting at an IP shows nothing. Jeez I (and probably Dean) thought it would be doing you guys a favour! And unless i'm mistaken it looks like it's recorded your IP wrong anyway! You had plenty of time to complain before he did it. Tell you what how about I post a how-to on getting "your" IP without going near the BBS? This is worst case a little rude (and i'm sorry I mentioned it), now stop scare mongering. Ain't 'hacking' on any level, simply the nature of the internet. Now I know what you're trying to get at, but I fear if you've had problems at the LSOC about 'posting ip's' it should have been a simple case. But you're right dealing with a writ is an annoying / expensive activity, but for this level of 'infringment' it'd just waste everyones time! And at the end of the day would all be at the cost of the dote that started it... (hope you got your LSOC pep good). I seriously doubt i've told you anything new, and you're no doubt aware of your err 'selective' interpretation of the 'law' in this area. Ain't got 10 years 'Internet' experiance but I do know funnily enough know how this particular element works... Anywho no harm intended, or done... now could we lay off the A&M issue, if you're going to diss them make sure it's on their own personal merits

Now stocking N/A MKIV cat replacement pipes
Gareth Davies replied to Chris Wilson's topic in mkiv Technical
Won't NA's sound mighty loud without their cats in? Excuse my ignorance but what kind of gain are you looking at on an NA. This is of course only out of interest, as my NA's gone now. -
Sorry Ash, seemed the best way to make the point no? Hate to break it to everyone, but the ip's on the various messages are available to anyone that can run a google search for the flaws in this BBS software. So essentially everyones ip IS available publically... Might be a good idea to upgrade the BBS software guys

Eyefi, you can toast the fluid in a single power braked launch. What RPM are you holding it up to? I'd definatly change it again.
-
Smeggin Hell! To be fair I think everyone blows the turbos on Renault 5's, kinda like head gaskets on MKIII's... Ever considered buying an NA?!? Don't steel turbo blades take your engine out when they fail unlike the ceramic ones that just dust?
-
Let me get this straight? You've had the car what a week or two and have already obilterated one or two turbos?!? I think your driving style must be so far out there that even Justin aspires to it Bet the hybrids will be awesome though!

On Topic : HID lights are far superior to the their normal equivilants, they're far less (if at all dangerous) like the dodgy overspecced lights some people use (which i'd expect is what 99.99% of the 7 pointers have been for and they ARE dangerous). You seriously expect the Nova crowd to be spending £4-500 pounds on a set of HID lights, when £40 illegal bulbs have a similar effect? Trying to stay on topic... oops failed. The HMSO have a full list of the C&U guidelines. Not very interesting really. And I couldn't find the amendment Mycroft was refering too. If you know what the lights are refered to in the docs just run a search for it (HID and High Intensity Discharge failed, but they probably have a more elaborate official name). However it does have a reference to the regs mentioned in the type approval docs (but they're a lot newer). But it seems in relation to main headlights not dipped / driving lights? (is that what they're called?) Anyway, for anyone that cares... Motor Vehicle Construction and Use 1987 Even more OT : I think everyones tired of the constant bickering, could you guys start a topic in Chit Chat and just have a good flame at one another and get it out of your system? Or could Branners / Dean just post the IP's of some relevant posts... if they're too busy i'll do it... which unfortionatly for any credibility would require the posting of the technique to access it. Then this 'problem' can be dealt with openly. Again my sincere apologies for diverting Pete's Thread.
-
I agree with Pete, the HID systems are excellent. Mine came with them installed before I bought it, and they do seem to have all kinds of control boxes (strangly I have HID dipped and side lights). Absolutly amazing light though. I used to think £4-500 for a system was a joke. But now i'd have to upgrade my next cars...

Thanks Darren, I think that makes me feel a little better I don't have any cats (well I think) so at least I couldn't have damaged them. Sounded a bit rough though...
