As people seem interested, stage RX-7 mods....
Gareth Davies replied to Chris Wilson's topic in mkiv Technical
My bro was looking at one of them, the vids with them look quite good (he has a S14a). Probably suit an integra well too... Alas, no supra version yet though. Guess i'll have to upgrade it the mans way then and get a real sequential... -

Brave men... Geez if I wasted time worring about all the things I "should" have done, i'd never bother getting out of bed. Well i'll need to replace the gearbox at some time anyway. So might as well enjoy the effortless cruising the auto offers until then. RLTC and an auto makes 1/4's sooo easy though True point and click driving. -

Sounds more like a work of art than a gearbox Chris. You'll have to keep us up to date on how it drives. Whats the costs of parts / labour on this kind of activity? And would such an upgrade be applicable to our beloved supras? Just imaging replacing the infernal auto box -
I only recently noticed the defi VSD Huds do 1/4 mile times too... now every set of traffic lights is a drag strip. Mind you they're off by about the same as the speedo (~7-8%). But it does mean you can pull amazing 1/4 mile times

Thats either a really cunning email address or you've not cut and pasted the right bit.

Geez I thought to do this properly would be thousands not hundreds. If Phils guy can do a top job for £400 then i'm sold  Mind you I guess I could save £375 and go buy a dremil and do it myself. Oh sorry and the £10 for the "Idiots guide to advanced engine head work". How much did that second hand engine cost ya Ian? Might be needing one

Surely you mean stock twins in true twin mode not sequential... the difference is between power delivery at 1500 rpm or 3000+ rpm. Assuming similar design big twins will always deliver power faster than a similar power single. The SP57 kit in the global scale of things is actually a 'small' single (however we are definatly talking relative terms here). Comparing a turbo good for ~600 rwbhp to one capable of ~800+ is a bit unfair.

I've just thought about this from the other viewpoint, and that is if you're planning on keeping your car to destruction (ideally meaning old age), then the relative low cost of underseal vs corrosion is probably well worth it. I think (despite not really needing it) it can't hurt to underseal it. If you plan of selling it in a few years, don't bother.

There was an article on mkiv.com about this but I can't find it at the mo this has been covered in a previous thread, use the search function... Ok Ok, I believe the easy way is just to select man-u and stick it in drive. Trouble is that locks it in 3rd not 4th (which is the one you want). If you want a proper power reading you need to do this and then at 4,000 rpm turn manu off, this will put it in 4th keeping the throttle down full. It'll mess the curve up though...
-
Requires is far too strong a word. You're right a J-spec doesn't have undersealing but 90% of us havn't had it done. I think it's generally considered ok not to bother.

I'm with Darren on that, i'm fairly sure the heating was linked to the rear heater. Strangly I thought all supras had the heated mirrors (my SZ does) except the ones with folding mirrors (like my new one). And my money is definatly on heated mirrors! The folding ones are neat, but thats about it. The heated ones allow you to see properly

1 = 1st 2 = 2nd D = 3rd You can't select 4th (however usually pressing man-u at a decent revs in D will). It won't change down either so you can start in a higher gear. I believe it still starts off in 2nd from standstill even if you have man-u enabled and D selected.

Looks like you have to be a member, not exactly cheap either is it worth it?

Very nice car Marcus, we get stuck with having to have front number plates which is a real PTA, so the front never looks that clean. My new car had the fronts done on them (but the bulbs are still orange), but I will be sorting out the sides.

Hmm maybe I was off with the cat thing... Well when you're right 1% of the time your wrong the other 99% Assuming it's an auto it could be a kickdown switch, would be strange if it was there on a manual This does actually provide a small amount of feedback, but it's been barely noticable on both my autos. Don't some nitrous systems have a microswitch beneath them?
-
Whenever I floor it I get a strange sensation of my foot being forced back... Oh yeah they call that acceleration I can't even think of a way the pedal could actually provide any kind of feedback. Sure there's nothing behind it? One of my hairest moments was when under braking a cd case went from the passager seat into the drivers foot well and under the brake pedal. All in a nice perfect never to be repeated motion. I think the most likely problem must be that you'd trapped your pet cat in the car and it had curled up in the drivers foot well behind the pedals. Was there a loud "meowwww!" when you slammed the throttle down as well?

Surely by debadging it 99% of the population won't know what it is! I've seen sooo many people walk round the back of mine to read the name badge Maybe you should re-badge it skoda or something, that would suprise everyone

Isn't that sentence usually followed by an immediate hard drive crash

Gavin, I think you just proved it is. I'd be suprised if they bothered with any kind of backup system for them. Since i'm sure if your car has no battery the boost controller is not very useful I think I recall one of the 200sx pepy's saying they had this problem when they transfered a DSBC between cars (since obviously it was disconnected). Guess it's a good idea to write down those hard earned settings. Merry New Year, Happy Christmas...

Phil, I didn't know about the KPH requirement, but you could kill two birds with one stone. If you fancy white dials get a set of those, they have miles and kph and on a converted speedo they should read fine. I've only seen 3 dial sets though so if it's a face lift one that might not be an option The cheek! We all know that our supras never go above 70Mph on the road To be fair that sounds like a really unfair legislation change.

Yeah JIC let my NA battery die horribly so needed to replace the battery and that's exactly what it did. If you're going to jump start it make sure the jump leads are rated properly, I have no idea if it actually makes a difference but i'll bet "up to 1,000cc" leads don't last long on a 3,000cc engine.

I was just wondering if there would be an interaction between the RLTC and an active NOS system. Since the RLTC controls the injectors would this mean that on a missed cycle the NOS would still fire and cause all kinds of problems on the next detonation? I don't really understand both technologies clearly enough to see if they can simply be made to complement one another. I'm sure i'm not the only one considering both.
-
The J-spec limiter is a lot lower than even the UK spec, but it will probably have been changed or removed. I didn't even think a J-spec had a trac fuse! But if you have one that has any effect then it won't harm the RLTC at all (infact it's a good idea to remove it). I think there's some ongoing concerns about the effect on the gearbox changes though.
-
Gordon, unfortionatly alloys that can fit UK Spec brakes are quite rare as they are f'in huge. The best bet is to find a friendly local owner and try a wheel swap. Or get to a meet and if the weathers good i'm sure you could try them there. There were the exact clearances and dimensions in another thread on this, but i can't find it

Mine suffered the flashing trac con light when the HUD was accidentally switched off. Annoyingly this seemed to disable all the devices in the chain after it, but it almost certainly was speed signal related. Which I think we'd already established, but just to add another take on it Since you're rebuilding your turbos anyway why not innovate a bit, i'm thinking sequential twins (mmmmmm, quad turbos) Might get round some of those lag problems. While i've got my NA back at the moment (and since the battery died care of our friends at IJC) I noticed there's LOADS of room in the engine bay compared to the TT (really sherlock?). I'd guess plenty more room than than a TT with the turbos removed. Maybe they'd make a better host to a Very large elaborate turbo conversion?
