I absolutely love my Mines ecu for n/a sup. It is brilliant piece of kit. It was broken tho, condensators were bad but local shop did fix it cheaply. I cant recommended these enough, i think these are must buy for every n/a owner who are interested to get more performance out of their car.

A very nice almost_stockish_silver supra. Good work mate. Full of nice details and those seats are superb! What steering wheel you have?

Can you tell why Supra doesn't suit you well? And what you think about n/a sup as a track car? And congrats for your good results! -
your opinion on buy an auto for cheap and convert in to 6speed getrag later
LasseV replied to mpobor's topic in Supra Chat
It is fundamentally different thing to drive auto than manual. Nothing bad about it, but manual is more desirable transmission when we are talking old about sport cars. It's has always been that way. People who buy new sports car want to have an auto box and they who buy used sports car want to have manual. -
No no no, i have a 5spd n/a SZR. I'm a twistie junkie and high hp levels aren't my thing. I know that tt is a legend, but i never really considered that. My other options were porker 968/911. I bought this thing for solely driver enjoyment. I choosed Supra mainly emotional reasons (looks and loved these things from the early 90's) and that lovely engine. Supra is an amazing car in every incarnation tbh. It is sensational car to drive and own. I hope you find what you are looking for.

If you are staying in bpu levels, 5spd box should handle it. But if you wan't a car which hold it's value you should keep it relative stock. So avoid making conversions and buy that car what you really want in the first place. It saves you some money in the long run. And i think you have a good timing, these cars are not going to be cheaper in the future... Edit: And yeah, go with the manual. I heard that auto box is not a bad unit, but it is still an auto box. I enjoy a lot for changing gears by myself

What kind of setup you have? And do you like it? Does it make throttle response more sharper and engine more eager to rev? I was thinking going full decat too, cos i have a old stock cats+some horrible and cheap aftermarket cat back system. It is little bit laggy sometimes (still has good top end power tho) and it sounds just horrible. I would like to have little bit better throttle response and not that loud but more sportier sound.

So whats the most someones spent on restoring their supra?
LasseV replied to supra_24's topic in Supra Chat
I have spent few thousand euros for restoration. Firstly there was a big service for engine, then i changed good sets of new tires, changed new front and rear bumpers+new paint for them and then i cleaned up the interior i.e cleaned everything, de-ionized the smell and re-trimmed the front seats. And a new radio too. Complete stock car. Still there is a quite a lot to do: few small things, new exhaust (de-cat good quality parts) and suspension refresh. Thats about two grand more. At least. Edit: I did have to fix air con too. -
Are you sure that w58 can't hold that 500bhp? Some american cousins runs about 450whp with that transmission without blowing it. Nice project anyway
-
Yeah, i agreed. Thats the reason why i have my SZ-R. I love to drive it in the twisties and it is a very capable car. It is still a fast car -not silly fast of course-but it accelerate quite rapidly to the speeds which could be lethal, and it has a high level of grip. Power of course is easily controllable, and you can really wring it when you are hooning. Still, it has same performance than the new Golf GTI but it doesn't get any of those electric safety nannies what modern motor has (except ABS). When you fucked up things, it's up to you can you recover that situation or not. So I would say that this is somehow a dangerous car to drive and it does only have a 220hp. Have to say tho, i love old sports cars cos you really have to drive them (Like GT86). You have to make work to get best performance out of them, but in the same time you really control that car. It is a sensational feeling! I never driven a really high hp Supra, but it must be a like a monster. You know, modern supercar level performance without electric nannies and a little bit of surprising way of deliver power. All the modern supercars have nannies so driving in wet surface is not a problem. Supra has none of those I remember when old british motor journo was interviewed and he was asked what kind of car is a Ferrari F40 in wet. He said that when F40 goes to boost it instantly started to spin rear wheels. When he changed to higher gears and tried to keep revs lower, it only makes things worse. Rear wheels just started to spin more faster---------->and then he spins out. Happened few times before he learned to keep it in track. And that beast got only 500hp... I appreciate every kind of Supra's and i hope that everyone enjoys their car. It really is worth it. Respect it, drive it hard and keep things safety

Yeah, but are they any good?
-
Nice car mate! I did re-trim front seats with OEM-quality leather (there was a group buy thread in somewhere in this forum from ebay supplier exoticleather or something like that) and it did make a big difference! Good quality stuff and looks of the interior is much more high class. And you are not only one who is very happy about performance of the n/a 5spd
-
So, it is essentially a gearing issue? i.e in auto gears are too tall. N/A 5spd moves better than my friends old (2003 or 2004) BMW 530D or Volvo V40 T4 in straight line. I think 3rd and 4rth are quite short gears and close together, which gives it quite good on the move performance. Similar than my mates 2011 Golf GTI. 2nd gear is quite tall tho (it breaks 60mph) and it makes it feels quite sluggish in slower speeds. I think that 2nd gear is so tall because they wanted top have best possible 0-60mph time. However, maybe everything is not lost. I did have a IS200A and it did have quite similar box with much weaker engine. When you want to go fast, you should change gears to 3rd and after that kick down will make rest of it. But yeah, that auto box can be a serious performance killer...
-
No it's not a fast car if you compared it against modern high performance cars. They are now insanely fast cars. But if you compare it against diesel mondeo, it is fast car And tbh, i was surprised when i noticed that manual n/a is as fast as new golf gti or new audi tt. So i think they offer quite good bang for buck in many ways.
-
So you are happy with your setup? I have to think about this. One problem is that i'm in finland Thanks your replies tho!
-
It is not a performance monster, but it sound like that there is something wrong in your car. 2jz-ge will give it best performance in high rpms, like above 4500 rpm or so. It has quite ok p/w ratio too so when it is on the move it should be quite fast even modern standards. Of course, we are talking about car which handles speed very well. It does feel totally different than your mondeo when you are driving 80mph+... And i think you have a too firm after market suspension set for road use. I think stock manual is faster than auto. My time figures were quoted from old U.S car magazine articles. Those are tested times for manual so it has same performance than porker 968.
-
Auto or manual? Edit: I have driven n/a auto only once, but it did have a bad box so i can't comment about performance.
-
Does n/a auto really feel that slow? I don't know the real performance figures for auto, but manual is like 6.0 -6.2 sec to 60mph. Have to be a damn fast diesel lol. Of course i know that mid range in modern diesel is very good (and n/a supra isn't), but eventually they will run out of buff. They really are not that fast, they only feel fast. My ex car was 150hp/350nm diesel and you really can't compare the performance of these two cars together.
