MR2 handling issue - please help diagnosis
GreaseMonkey replied to jaymdee's topic in Non-Supra Technical
Hi jaymdee, (Just a thought) I had similar issue on my mates Rev2 Mr2. When driven around under 60mph the car handled fine/ cornered ok. But at 60mph plus, on a straight road, a skittish or loose rear end sensation was noticed, especially when sat in the passenger seat under hard acceleration. Rear end of car felt like it had shopping trolly casters on it as would slightly jerk the car from one side to another making it feel uneasy. Put on his 2 poster ramp at work and couldn't see anything obvious (i.e no play/ exessive movement/ worn bushes), wasn't untill we went round to check the torque setting of all the rear suspension/ subframe bolts that we noticed the O/S/R "Strut Bar", where it mounts to the vehicle body, was loose by 1/4 of a turn. We roadtested it again after tightening/ torqued it, and was ok, problem solved. Which also stopped the knocking noise it made when going over some harsh bumps, which we thought was the front engine mount at first. The Torque setting was 83 ftlbs/ 113 n.m. pg SA69 in the sw20 chassis body manual or this link he got off the mr2 owners club to find the torque settings. pdf download sw20 manual: http://www.mediafire.com/?ax3xm4nrk9m#1 Useful repair manuals/ links: http://www.mr2oc.co.uk/forums/198/80372.html -

Just a thought, Poss might be the rubber injector seals in the cylinder head. Thinking could be that they are perished and opening up when hot?, making it run lean/ poor idle when hot. May be worth checking the spark plugs to see what state there in may give an indication as to what maybe at fault , i.e lean or rich. Although from what I've read there's no indication of misfire, so I may be wrong. Only other thought would be a wiring fault or MAP sensor. Had an IS200 which had similar symptoms due to an aftermarket piggyback ecu fitted, which tapped into the ECU end wiring for the MAP sensor / Temp sensor / Cam position. removed the aftermarket ECU and repaired the wiring back to OEM, ran just fine , but it's just a thought.

I Quite like the 2nd set as the Black would be a nice contrast against the Silver.

I'm with "rob boi" on this as well, as I also am not a big fan of LPG Conversions. I've seen/ had alot problems with them and steer clear of cars that have been converted, as have been more hassle than there worth, IMO. But if the kit you get works for you then fairplay.

My 'Song for the Moment' would be: A: Ellie Goulding T: Starry Eyed I quite like these remixes of it as well, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YmvI98s2jno

Try this web site. http://www.carbibles.com/ I thought it was quite good (IMO) at learning the basics and fundamentals of the operations of a motor vehicle and its components.

2JZ-GTE into Volvo 740 in double quick time
GreaseMonkey replied to Chris Wilson's topic in Supra Chat
Very true Chris Wilson. Both my 850R Estate and my Mums 240 Estate have done us well over the years (especially when shifting furniture ) Once again nice find . Hoping to do this conversion on my Mums 1984 2.3 carb 240 GLE Estate when she gives up using it. (Chance would be a fine thing, hopefully in the next 5 years, lol) Would make an exellent sleeper, and would like to lower it with a set of 850 R Volan 17" wheels or a set of old school BBS LM style wheels. . But its another idea in the pipeline of many, lol!. It'll be done some day just waiting to see when that day will be. -
Just a thought, might be worth checking the Water Pump to see if it's leaking from behind the pulley or dried coolant buildup/ stains from/ around its overflow pipe?.

Shame about the weather, but as always nice to see everyone again & catch up. Hope to see you all next year. -
Hope this is some use to you?. The Spark Plugs it shows in my manual are: PK16R11 for ND (Nippon Denso) or BKR5EP11 for NGK. (maybe irrelevant or superseded now ?,since publication of manual, may be an answer floating around the forum on which spark plugs best to use?). The Gaps for them are 1.1mm (0.043 in.) NEW / 1.3mm (0.051 in.) Used/max gap. Just a thought… The faults described , I thought I check in the 2JZ-GE manual. Here’s a list of possible causes under “Rough Idle” (I thought best fit the decribed symptoms?) in the order the manual recommends tackling in. I thought could shed some light on the issue?(or maybe confuse you with my rambling on, lol!). 1) Switch condition signal circuit (DTC 51) * A/C SWITCH SIGNAL CIRCUIT * THROTTLE POSITION CIRCUIT (IDL SIGNAL) * ACCELERATOR PEDAL & OR CABLE * ECU 2) ISC valve/ circuit. * CHECK OPERATION FOR ISC VALVE - NG replace ISC valve. * CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTORS BETWEEN EFI MAIN RELAY RELAY ISC VALVE & ECU. 3) Vacuum Sensor Circuit. * OPEN OR SHORT IN VACUUM SENSOR CIRCUIT. * VACUUM SENSOR * ECU 4) Injector circuit. * Wiring/ Connectors/ fuses etc. 5) Variable Resistor Circuit (Idle Mixture Adjusting Screw sensor) 6) Ignition signal Circuit * Wiring Harness / Connectors 7) Compression. 8) Fuel Pump 9) Igniton Coil. 10) Distributor 11) Spark Plugs 12) Back up Power Source Circuit. *EFI No.1 FUSE *WIRE HARNESS/ CONNECTORS *ECU

You probably need to be a Volvo fan to enthuse about these
GreaseMonkey replied to Chris Wilson's topic in Off Topic
I quite like this (one of many) classic BTCC race which made me laugh, Murray Walkers comment to John Clelands response to Steve Sopers overtake, lol! -

Interesting Link Chris, Cheers. Yeah, I quite like the Cosworth Sierras or RS turbo Escorts (Especially in White, Black or Silver). I watched that Ford Sierra programme on "Men & Motors" last saturday. I liked it when they spoke of/ showed the "Cossies" and Tim Harvey Racing the Labatts Touring car. -

Nice Find Chris! I'd have the ex BTCC 850 touring car (if I won the lotto/ robbed a bank lol!). I`m a big fan of the Volvos. More the 200 & 800 models. (I own an 96' 850R estate as daily driver :-), just wish it was a RWD sometimes.) I've got plans, V8/S6/turbo sleeper or like post #9, for my Mums 84' 240 Estate.(when she gets too old to drive it lol!) (But like most things, they're still and probably will be just "PLANS",lol.) The Touring Cars ( if they are and can still be called that?) of today dont have the same atmosphere of the early ones of the 90's "Auto Trader" series and before that. -

Just a thought....... I once came across a nasty metallic knocking/ clicking noise from the front end on a mates Celica, ok when going in a straight line on smooth roads regardless of temperature. Only occured mainly when cornering on full lock or when going over uneven surfaces. Thought it was Subframe/ Suspension bolts which we checked and found to be ok . Turned out to be the front Bumper Reinforcement Bar, (Behind/ underneath the front Bumper which connects to the front Chassis Legs) after alot of swearing and head scratching lol!. The Creaking/ Knocking we found was caused by the Reinforcement bar bolts being ever so slightly loose, So as the front Chassis Legs moved against the Reinforcement bar from the Torsional/ laterally twisting forces imposed on the Chassis a i.e cornering/ uneven surfaces made the Creak/ Knocking noise. We suspect it occured due to age we guess, as he had the car since new and hasn't touched or damaged the front end ,(now 10yrs old, when fault occured ) Has been ok since/ at present. But its just a thought........

I know it might sound simple, but have you checked the main Fuses under the Bonnet for large amperage stuff like the Alternator?. Just a thought?.

There are moments sometimes I want to bang my head against a wall thinking "How did this person wake up, let alone get out of bed?". Then I just shake my head in disbelief walking away slowly, avoiding eye contact. I get the impression these days from younger/middle aged people it seems to be cool, to be ignorant/ stupid or both. IMO.

How many miles do you drive in the Supra each month?
GreaseMonkey replied to Spike3.0's topic in Off Topic
About 65 miles a month (average over 6 years) but have'nt used it for 3 months, as been busy with work . -
I managed to do 260 miles approx with 2 of my mates on a trip to Santa Pod and only cost about £40 in fuel. Like Heckler, "never went above 70, no hard acceleration". I used the cruise control and had the A/C on as well (and being boring, checked my tyre pressures, lol) . It's odd, but nice considering it's an Auto TT. But when its driven on short trips/ locally, it drinks fuel, lol.
