Update It was decided drag racing wasn't an option So my race weekend at Shakey was cancelled (after heavy rained on the saturday night no racing was possible). After looking into my gearbox noises i decided that an overhaul would be my best option. Second hand gearbox's cost a ridiculous amounts of money and they could have their own issues. My local mechanics suggested were did the work ourselves over the winter months and find parts ect when we looked at what was worn or broke. I drooped Pete at Thor an email asking if he did or knew of anybody that did gearbox repairs/overhauls, he suggested speak to Leon Green at JPS Motorport http://www.jpsmotorsport.com/ After speaking to Leon i was pleased to learn that parts were available from Japan and he could do a full repair/overhaul far cheaper that buying another second hand gearbox. It was decided i would trailer the car down to Milton Keynes today for the work to commence. The M1 jouney was not pleasant! M1 closed southbound at J15a when we were leaving at J14 then very busy on the way home again, but after a 6 hour round trip i feel that i've moved a step closer to getting my car sorted and perhaps with fingers crossed using it early in 2013 when i can try the new power levels Ryan found on its last tuning session I shall update this tread once i speak with Leon again and find out what is happening next.

mine was sat for 12 months in a nice garage, when i decided to take it for mot i left it tickinbg over for a while and it developed a water leak, down the rear of the engine area, after it was inspected we noticed a small pin hole in the rear core glug. Pain in the arse to remove and replace, but cheap a part. Job done, new water/anti freeze and no worries for a while on that front
-
rear core plug is my guess ;-)

Jon did you get the box rebuilt? Winter project for mine is the gearbox refurb now after fitting the new clutch

After 12 months without my car running due to clutch slip on my 2nd HKS twin plate i decided to buy a second hand RPS street max with with 6 puck sprung disc and RPS flywheel from Mike (MSW TT). On Monday the fitting process started down at a pals garage Tyre4U in Mansfield with him and me undertaking the work along with another pal being around for advice when needed. Following 6 hours of steady work the new clutch was in and i jumped in the drivers seat ready to give it a blast and see how good the RPS was. I couldn't engage the gears so we decided to bleed the clutch fluid, easy job as an airline bleeding system was available. The problems was we didn't have and new fluid so we finished for the day packed up and left the car up on the ramp for today when i would return with fluid that i had in my garage at home. Today when i arrived at the garage mid-morning with bottle of 5.1 fluid i was told that my pal had been thinking about why a gear couldn't be engaged and realised we may have installed the disc back to front so it was a case of strip it down again, pull the bellhousing apart enough to get to the disc and turn it around. We managed to turn the disc around without to much problem, refitted all the parts that we had to remove and once again i jumped ito the drivers seat and it was time to test the new clutch Reverse of the ramp, back out of the garage door and gentley up the forcourt slop towards the test area, due to the weather we are having at the moment everywhere is wet and the roads are a bit greasy so tyre spin was inevetable I also noticed a rattling noise that wasn't audiable with my old clutch! Was this just while in reverse? Would it get worse when underload in a forward gear? Lets see was the call, a bit of drifting around the carpark and onto a short road section next to the garage, after not driving the car for 12 months i decided with the wet condiditons low boost would be most advisable. My legs were a bit shakey with the adrenalin but that didn't stop me!!! Raise the revs and drop the clutch, i couldn't hear any rattle now it was just a case of keep control while the wheels were scrambling for grip as i sped up the road, grabbing 2nd then 3rd gear while the car shaked its arse and the tyres spun looking for grip. Thats why i love my Supra and why i'm not selling it I turned back into the garage and straight back onto the ramp were we could have a look what was rattling, the car was quickly lift into the air, the back end jacked up, inspection plate removed and i engaged the clutch while my mate had a look what was happening. After much deliberation we all decided the clutch was fine It was the gearbox that was making a noise The oil was drained and upon inspection we could see brass fillng, an enderscope was used to inspect the gearbox internals while running in different gears, all looks well within! Shafts look good and gears look fine. We presume the gearbox has worn the syncro over time by 'careful' useage New gearbox oil was added, the car will have an engine oil change, brakes checked, new water/anti freeze added and a once over before the car is loaded onto the trailer and heads off to Shakey for Sunday last round of the Pro Street Drag Series and me test the upgrades that have been done since it last ran including test the clutch I'll update the post as we progress with the gearbox inspection over the winter and we may even do the overall ourselves if I can sort some data for the Getrag.

Anybody used a Spec Super Twin Clutch? You can see them here http://www.mvpmotorsports.com/Templates/frmTemplateM7.asp?SubFolderID=200&SearchYN=N

After my first one warped turned blue and distorted and was knackered after 200ish burn outs and 1/4 mile runs we were told that they do not like slipping, they will heat quickly and distort. Use should be on or off. Driving in traffic jams isn't easy without being able to slip the clutch also doing burn out and quick drag starts involves some clutch slip. I'm not having another, my next clutch will either be able to handle slip or i will not be doing burn outs and drag racing, at 1k a go these clutchs work out expensive if replaced every couple of years.

I've had 2 HKS twins, both havent lasted very long (about 6k between them both) they have a nice pedal feel though. My new clutch will NOT be an HKS as id like a few more miles between new clutch plates. Like other have said check out the RPS range. After speaking to a few of the lads on here who use them i think they are far more user friendly.

Looks very good Kev some good work, are you still trying to sell it? -
Own a small company 'GKB Asbestos Ltd' that do all types of work with asbestos, also work as a machine operator for a regular wage packet since the recession hit and our daughter decided to get married this June. Any spare time goes into refurbishing work on our new property and the other 2 rental properties we own. I enjoy being my own boss but in reality i'm a slave to my customers. The consultancy and surveying aspects of the job are interesting.

I'm another old timer then! With my list of previusly owned cars there's a few old timers in there with points and condensers and damp in the dizzy caps to contend with Couldn't believe somebody didn't know how to check the gap on a set of points, but then again i can't remember the last time i did a set Isn't there any back street garages with 'mechanics' in Great Yarmouth? -
I'm sure an NA would have enough initial torque to get you off the line with a sticker tyre as long as you can find the right revs. This may involve some practice. Other cars without turbos manage to use MT's ok. If you dont get some MT's and i'm at Shakey when you are i don't mind you having a go with my wheels and tyres just so you can see the extra grip level you will get off the line.
-
You can practice all you like on street tyre and it will be of little use as when you put MT's on has the grip level is immense, far better than R888’s or any street tyre. You could then start playing with tyre pressures to perfect it even more. Whatever practice you do on normal road surfaces will not be duplicated when launching at the strip due to the greater grip levels. You will find that slipping the clutch as you launch will help your 60ft times, obviously this isn’t good for the clutch so be prepared for more bills. Transferring the extra traction forces will also put extra strain on the drive train components so again be prepared for even more bills. I’ve got a set of rims with R888 on that I used when I started drag racing the car, they helped but the lack of tyre wall also hindered my 60 ft times. The line lock will help you warm tyres but even that isn’t straight forward, warm to much and they overheat, not enough and your just wasting money for no gain. All a difficult balance. The big thing to remember is the better the 60 ft the better chance you have of running better times, practice will help achieve this. I’ve kept a log of all the information I gain after each run, from this I ‘try’ and figure out what to do next or what to improve. Good luck with it and remember practice and patience

I've run on the drag strip with no air filter a few time when the ambient temp has been high and under bonnet temps are also high. The 1/4mile doesn't worry me its the road back to the pits were things are loose on the road. It would be hard for anything to jump up infront of the car and find its way through the gap were my headlight normaly fits and then into the turbo. But its a different thing if i was following another vehicle, you then are taking a much higher risk of things turning bad.

When i thought that i'd been shafted for some wheels and tyres it was Kenny who helped sort it out by getting the guy to ring me from costa rico he seems a good sort of lad. Fingers crossed he gets things sorted. I did have his mobile number back then but didn't keep it after everything was sorted. Can anybody call by his garage and see if he's about?
