MattP
hi guys having a problem with my heater matrix it still kicks out heat but when its on it smells nasty. I have tried putting some coolant flush through the system and it hasnt got rid of the smell is it due a new matrix? or something simple that might fix this problem
trinitom
it could be the blower filters, i think there is a spray for that.
hoff
Is the smell anti-freeze? If so, you sound like there is a problem. Is the footwell wet at all, any mist on the windscreen?
j_jza80
I'd prize up the carpet from around the transmission tunnel on both sides, there should be water there if the matrix is leaking (mainly on the passenger side)
stevie_b
"smells nasty" - you might need to expand on that for us. If nasty means mouldy, it should be as simple as treating your aircon with an antibacterial agent. If nasty means coolant smell, that indicates a coolant leak, which probably means a new heater matrix.
MattP
theres no leak on the system from what i can tell. when i say it smells nasty its not coolant its like a rustic smell theres no smoke or dampness etc just a horrid smell. pbryant_knight
Has some small chav kid crapped in your engine bay while you haven't been looking? they can be nasty like that can the Chavs
jon5698
I am having problems with my heating as well, it takes about 1hr before it starts to kick out hot air. I have ordered a new thermostat and radiator cap from mr t and am going to change the coolant over the weekend to see if it cures it. stevie_b
il do what i do best with toyotas give it a kick What, the matrix? It's a couple of hours of spannerwork until you can even see the thing. jon5698: if you change the coolant, try hose-flushing the matrix in both directions whilst you're at it. Let us know if a new stat/cap works.
nigelboyne
il do what i do best with toyotas give it a kick do you have headlight washers. when i bought the supra same sort of sick smell coming in to the car taught it was the heater as only came in when turned on turns out to be stagnic stale water in the washer bottle
Ric
give your local detailing/valeting place and ask for a interior odour bomb application (probably called different things) but most will know what you are asking for They basically put a machine in your car and run it for 30 minutes with the blowers on full, its meant to clean all the crap out, kill bacteria whats making the smell! You can buy an aerosol that does the same thing, Ibrar a trader on here had some a while back, turn the aircon on and set to recirc and close all the windows, set off the aerosol and leave inside the footwell. Worked a treat in my car
Ric
Or that yes I've never had any experience with the aerosols so probably just as good, halfords also sell those i think

Thanks for the advice stevie, is that just a case of putting a hose pipe onto the radiator top hose and running water through it, and then doing the same with the bottom hose? Dnk
Thanks for the advice stevie, is that just a case of putting a hose pipe onto the radiator top hose and running water through it, and then doing the same with the bottom hose? You need to remove the in and out feeds that fit to the matrix which are between the the back of the engine and the bulkhead, then with a hose pipe put on one side then the other which might loosen up anything in there. Ignore the green and red arrows
stevie_b
What Dnk said. You don't need to touch anything around the radiator when flushing the matrix.
Dnk
The only thing i'd add is to try hot water as that tends to loosen up grime and sludge better than cold
