The Official Series 14 Top Gear Thread

That's interesting. I wonder if I'm missing something. What parts did you find funny or amazing? So much of what they do seems to be scripted that I now don't believe hardly anything I see on the program.

Do we believe they really slept in their cars?

Do we believe that May's crappy car (Senderos or somesuch?) was accidentally reversed into?

Or that May really had a shunt in the black Lambo in Romania?

Or that green Stig needed medical treatment because the chminey came off the generator?

etc etc.

I didn't see most of the latest episode, and from what Jake's written I'm glad I didn't. God that sounds dire. It reminds me of Men Behaving Badly. I half expect Neil Morrissey to pop up in one of TG's skits.

I don't know what Top Gear would have to do to really drive viewers away. We (myself included) seem to be a very forgiving lot. Or maybe there's plenty of people out there who genuinely enjoy Top Gear still.

TG is still a great show, yes the jokes are quite heavily scripted but the three of them work so well together. The only bit I really have to turn over for is the star in the reasonably priced car bit, completely pointless rubbish where a Z list celeb plugs their new book, lasts about 10 minutes as well.

I love never mind the buzzcocks but their 'intros round' where they hum out a song has me reaching for the remote also.

I would like to see some older cars on there though, not everyone can afford the latest and greatest. One of the best ones they did I think is when they had some sort of people carrier try to equal an evo around their track and they were changing the brakes and adding other mods, genuinely interesting stuff or where they had the old aston DB5 and they put modern suspension etc on it and compared the times, the nitrous jaguar etc etc.

Was this a recent episode? I can't have watched that one, but it sounds like another example of these tests where they could take it one of two ways:

1) Make semi-genuine attempts to fit performance parts to the people carrier to see what difference it would make; or

2) Clarkson sticks on go-faster decals down the side of the people carrier whilst Hammond spot-welds a piece of scrap metal to the rear roof to make a spoiler in an A-Team van style. May allegedly spends all day fitting a K&N air filter, during which Clarkson draws a knob on the back of his jacket.

There are loads of folks who love it. PistonHeads has got loads of guys proclaiming the last episode as the best ever and plenty of "OMG I've never laughed so much" type comments. I'm genuinely interested to know whether folks can't see the almost complete fakeness of TG or whether they just don't care.

I watch it cos there's nothing else on that's better (obviously) - but I wouldn't stay in especially to see it. I missed loads of the last series because I just couldnt be bothered to watch it, even though I have Sky+.

Yeah, that part is a blatant 'Filler'. Apparently it's the part they cut out when they (BBC) sell the show to all the other countries, so they can fit their advert breaks in.

ha! That's my favourite bit!

Just goes to show that we're all different I suppose.

Again though (and I'm not trying to argue with you or prove you wrong mate) I thought that one was rubbish too.

It was a Renault something ('Vel Satis' or somesuch) - right?

They were supposedly trying to mod the car to make it faster, weren't they? But actually the whole piece was really trying to prove that modding a car makes it slower.

And the car magically suddenly had an expensive aftermarket exhaust, which was unmentioned and not allowed for in their 'strict budget'.

And if I remember right didn't they put a F1 car's massive rear spoiler on the people carrier 'to make it faster' as well? It might have been fitted back to front as well, I forget now.

It wouldn't have surprised me if they'd have said the people carrier won either.

I remember some feature on a Range Rover Overfinch where they supposedly did a drag race with the Overfinch off road at the side of the run way and some other car on the runway itself. The official 0-60 time for the Overfinch was slower than the other car, yet even though it was racing off road it still won?

I'm with Jake on this, you can't believe anything they say any more so it's not a car review programme any more. I would never trust any of their input when looking at a car now cos it's all made up for the show.

Oh god no, I much prefer the car porn. It'd get boring very quickly if they were doing 'proper' road tests of the latest Polo saying how comfy the headrests are!! I want loud, fast, expensive and pointless for the whole hour. I want to see cars I'll never be able to afford, being torn around the track at great speed.

There are plenty of review sites on the net, and there are other programmes that deal with the mundane. Top Gear should stay in top gear.

.... and the worst thing about TG is when people claim Clarkson's rants as their own opinion.

Like all the people suddenly deciding that Audi drivers are all cocks - you never heard that generalisation before Clarkson started on about it. (Still, it took the heat off us Beemer Tossers a bit).

Some chap on PH said he wouldn't have a Chrysler Crossfire because he though it "looked like a dog having a poo" - exactly what JC said in his review of the Crossfire.

And the other people that will tell you how the new shape Civic Type R is rubbish - even though they've never driven one.

He's got far too much power that guy. He can make or break a car's sales in this country.

I bet he gets some nice backh^H^H^H^H^H errr hospitality from car companies.

Nice work if you can get it. Lucky Git.

I'd disagree with that tbh. For a long time before TG started on it I was noticing how all the new shape Audis seemed to be driven very aggressively and were taking the mantle from BMW.

Oddly I drive our new Audi far worse than I do in the old one, I am infected with the cock now.

You can't blame TG for other people quoting it.

If you don't like it, don't watch it. Its the best form of escapism on TV for me, no typical bullshit just pure entertainment. I don't watch it for serious car reviews, and in fact Clarkson hated my current daily drive but it doesn't stop me having my own opinion on my car.

I didn't.

I blame the people that don't have the wit to form their own opinions. It's still a bad thing about the programme though.

No bullshit?
