I didn't realise I was this unhealthy!

Last Wednesday I had a heart palpitation whilst at work. Not just a skipped beat but something that felt like my heart was doing an impression of a fish flopping around, struggling for breath. This was accompanied with a near faint.

Took myself off to the docs on Thursday expecting the 'eat better, get more exercise' routine. Instead I got told I have high blood pressure and got sent to have some blood drawn for testing. All this and a card sending me off for an ECG. I thought they'd write to me. The doc said "no. you go now!"

Anyway, got all that done and went back this afternoon for the results.

ECG is okay although I'm being referred to a cardiologist 'just to be certain'

Thyroid is okay. I don't have Diabetes and my kidneys are fine.

However, my cholesterol is high (6.6 although I've not researched what that means) and the doc would like to put me on medication for that...

.....but....

....he wasn't happy with something to do with my liver and has postponed putting me on pills until I've had a scan to look at my liver, gall bladder and the like. He said I drink too much and looked as though he thought I was fibbing when I told him how much (or rather how little) I actually drink.

So, I'm a bit gutted TBH. 37 and overweight with high blood pressure, high cholesterol, heart palpitations and a potentially dodgy liver.

My other half is working on a really healthy, beneficial diet for me and we are now making sure that our two to three times a week walks are now every day.

Pah!

It WAS a compliment actually

I know, Rob, and it's much appreciated.

It's weird that all my weight is around my waist. I don't have flabby arms or legs although I've a bit of a chin. Must be why people don;t think of me as being, in effect, obese!

Change of lifestyle can work wonders. The hard bit is getting started and sticking to it. I'm still trying to get started. :D

I've even considered changing my job to a more physically active role especially as the latest job I've applied for (data integrity officer with Wakefield Police) is a non-starter due to being off sick more than five times in the last three years.

Crikey, scary stuff

I had similar last year Martin, high blood pressure, liver dysfunction, extremely high cholesterol, high heart rate, heart palpitations.... This was one reason for a change of diet and lifestyle in general. After 4 months I'd lost 4 stone (18->14stone), heart rate was normal, blood pressure normal, cholesterol normal, liver function near normal and felt fit and healthy.

It's very hard work in the beginning (first few weeks) but you really need to sort out your diet first and foremost. After a few weeks you'll feel like a different person and might even consider the dreaded exercise :D

Excercise and healthy eating can do wonders mate :) A little bit of change every day will have you right as rain in no time.

I've gone from booze guzzling layabout to pretty damn fit teetotal health freak in about 2 years. Never felt better, although shift work is killing me ;)

Hope its all ok with the results

I used to get the freaky heart palpitations regularly. Had the ECGs, blood tests, scans etc too. I'm just within my weight range, but being tall get away with it. ;)

I threw away the deep fat fryer and stopped eating most greasy/fatty foods. It very rarely does it now.

Darryl,

I read your write ups with interest and then did nothing! I don't mind exercise. I get close to and often exceed the 10,000 steps per day but at the moment it's just keeping me level. Hopefully a better diet will increase my energy levels and I'll be able to walk those steps faster. Hell, maybe one day I'll even run a bit.

Fook! It's a lot of work but I really can't think about the horrible alternatives.

My crucia ligament went for the second time just before new year was told to loose 1and a half stone asap.Loosing weight is not that hard if what you have been told scares you enough. The specilist told me loose the weight or you may suffer/be crippled for life. Now april and 2 stone lighter, not so hard on my self now but the thing that hit home was that you only get one life and one shot at it .The thought of not being active scared the hell out of me.Act now Martin, see the light.Good luck mate.

You'll find the diet makes an enormous difference to energy levels. When I was (really) overweight an hours work in the garden or on the car was a major effort, as soon as the diet was better I could work for hours and not get tired. This was before the major weight loss even started, so it's not a weight thing, it's just a case of making sure you get all the right nutrients, keep the fatty foods to a minimum and making sure you eat regularly throughout the day (i.e. 5 small meals/fillers a day is FAR better than 1 large one)

If you need any daily diet examples, let me know as I have a lot of info here.

At your current weight I wouldn't even say that exercise is that important (10000 steps a day is already plenty for a healthy person). It's the diet that will make the difference :)

Is cutting out the booze an option for you RedM?

I lost a stone in just over 4 weeks of no beer, which I don't miss btw- the beer that is :)

I don't drink much TBH. Mostly I'm just too poor to waste money on alcohol.

I'll probably pester you for some meal ideas shortly.;)
