Why did you buy your supra??

I went for a Supra because it has a fast smooth GT look about it, similar to the styling of Ferrari's etc. They were and still are one of the best buys in terms of bhp for your money. I'm also into circuit racing and a high powered RWD car suits my driving style right to the ground. :p

To be perfectly honest I had never seen one up close and personal until I had already decided that it was what I wanted and went to test drive a few at JIC. It wasn't until a few months after I saw a nice looking UK-spec in a magazine and thought I must have it !

I started driving in a old Metro when I was a student, it was falling apart - probably held together by the dirt.

So, when I started working and earning a decent wage - I bought a UK spec Aqua-Marine MR2 - absolutely gorgeous colour!

Then after 3 years - bought an MR2 Turbo. Fab car! Very quick. And now a year down the line I have a Supra. For me, the Supra was the next logical step "up the car chain" - that and they look the business.

I wanted a TT for the exact same reason CJ has pointed out.

And after reading posts from here, the NA & TT are the same on insurance.

I was actually going for an Auto, because an Auto Box in the Supra is very smooth. But the Auto's I looked at weren't that great. So, instead I managed to find my Manual TT. Maybe my next Supra will be a Auto.

My car was completely, 100% stock ... 4 months ago - I've now got the modding bug (I'm blaming this BBS for that! :) ) - since then £1.7k has been spent on bits/equipment - not inc labour to fit them.

I'll buy another Supra - for sure! Hopefully a VVTI TT Manual - that'd be nice!

This ones interesting & i think we ('er indoors & myself) bought for a slightly different reason.

Went out 3 weeks ago to look at a couple of ZX & a FTO, as I knew that a TT supe was out of our budget. Called into a dealer (local) on the offchance because I *thought* I had seen him advertise FTO's. Was looking around the FTO & I mentioned to Donna that the White Supe was plain but immaculate, she agreed. Delaer was out so we left, went & tried a GTO NA & a ZXTT & liked both but they were uncared for (not tatty just unloved).

On the way home we called in again to look at the FTO !!

Steve (dealer) comes across & has a chat & mentions the supra, I refuse completely saying it's only a NA & after a Mk3T it's gonna feel like a lead weight. He asked if I had driven a MKiv NA, NO, so throws me the keys & tells me to bugger off for half hour :D

Within one mile (before we left the 30 limits) we had decided to buy it !! on what ........ COMFORT - Last time I can remember sitting in a car that felt that good was when i bought my forst Jag in 1983 !! Power didn't seem shattering but it went ok & I said I could suffer the lack of buzz in exchange for a really immaculate & comfortable car.

Returned to the forecourt, got out & he walked across smiling. Told him he was right :innocent: & looked at the FTO, he threw me the keys for that one too ;) Good little toy for shopping but not a motorway cruiser (shame the supe doesnt have tiptronic though).

So, we asked him to start the SVA, reg process & 3 weeks later we were getting impatient. He called yesterday, bas****d SVA muppets had removed the ICE, & he's having trouble refitting, so hopefully his autosparks will sort it this morning & we can have it today :D

Its white

it's standard

no bodykit

no bling

no turbo

But who cares, at my age I ain't after racing the novas :baa:

One day I had a silly idea:

I decided that I wanted a car with the performance and looks of the best European GTs, the reliability and service intervals of a bog-standard Japanese saloon, the rarity of a relaxed gazelle at a lion convention, and the moddability of a bucket of lego.

And what's more, I wanted it all for around £20k.

Errr, so I got a Supra, and saved ten grand into the bargain as well.

Nice.

:conf: Does she want a toyboy? I'm not as expensive as a whole Supra, just some nice wheels and an ICE install will pay for my 'services'!!

Originally intended to buy a black MR2 Turbo for the wife, saw one advertised in the paper at a local dealers, went down to have a look, get there and he'd just sold it.

Parked near it was this silver supe, just off the boat, we were the first people to see it, decided it was mine and the wife still hasn't forgiven me totally yet. (She's still got my old Cavalier):D

Well, I had a VW Corrado VR6 - I got bored of it... started looking for a new car started looking at TVR's (cos my dad had one and i drove it) But my dad told me to get a Supra - went down to JIC to "take a look" ended up buying on instead, now he's sold the TVR and about to buy a Supra TT

It all my dads fault.

i loved the supra when it first came out in the uk but it was always a car i could never afford(and still can`t)

and then this year after getting my modded calibra turbo back after some more work i see a silver supra TT for sale.i took it for a test drive and come back with a massive grin on my face and put my calibra up for sale an hour later.it took two weeks to sell and in the mean time she sold the supra for 5k:eek: and it took me another 6 weeks and another 2 1/2 k to find another one:blink:

I love Supras but if the Supra was only available in Aerotop there's no way I would buy one.

Don't get me wrong, if you like them that's fine with me but don't be thinking that everyone wants an aerotop. (Same principle applies with UK spec cars)

Seriously mate?????? If mine was not an aerotop I so would have bought the technically better RX7 as a hard top car. The supra in all its glory is a nice vehicle but on paper a rex is better. It looks better and is a damn site rarer than supes are. Only semi serious contender is the ZX targa and lets face it suicide would be on the cards before you resorted to that:p

Yeah, seriously.

The RX7 is nice looking (if you like MR2 sized cars) but they have so many other issues. I don't know what you mean about them being technically better.

I'd have an RX7 if they were 50% bigger and had a decent size four stroke engine. I'd never buy the fugly RX8 though. TBH, I could maybe live with the titchy hairdresserness of the RX7 if it had the Supra engine but I don't think I'd be able to live with the medallion-man, chestwig image of the aerotop Supra.

YMMV

i don't see the aerotop having a different image to the hardtop tbh. The average Joe will think all supra's are aerotops or hardtops depending on what one they've ever seen and thats if they remember or even bother to find out its a supra in the first place.

RX7 is a seriously nice motor IMO but i do too many miles to risk having one......

I agree. I looked at the aerotop and it dint appeal one bit. I thought it made the car ugly. Each to their own eh?

Maybe it's my own personal bias. Seems to me that there's no good reason to own an open top car in this country other than trying to be flash. Personally, I think that all open top car drivers are "look at me" types.

I didn't buy a Supra to impress the neighbours or to 'look good' in, I bought it for the car it is.

Let's be honest, aerotop Supras handle worse and weigh more than the hardtop Supra, right? So, other than the questionable 'image' why would anyone want one?

Well, it's less powerful, far less reliable, much harder to tune and not as fast from point to point, so what makes it technically better? It's got an interesting engine, and it does look better I think, but engine rebuilds every 60K? I think not...

i dont like aerotops too. like the clean look of the hard top supra. its different seeing a powerfull aeroto in america with there weather. not same in england. do like the sunroof in the escort though. i would never consider a rx7 due to the bad so called reputation with the rotor tips. i sat in one and they too small you touch elbows with passengers and they feel cramped inside.

the aerotops are rare but not everybody wants one. each to there own.

Yep - thats me!

Hands up - when I had one I actually wanted it for the weather and the 'thrill of the open road' feeling

In reality the car didn't really perform any differently (with struts etc in place the yaw was noticeable but not overly) and I wouldn't be seen dead with music blaring out at traffic lights etc!

However - ANYONE with a Supra has that 'look at me' mentality surely?

And why not?

:)

As far as I was aware when I was looking at buying, the top spec RX7 was faster to 60, handled better in the corners, and braked better as standard than the supra did. It looks better IMHO and is alot rarer a car, I see one in this area occasionally and thats it I see several supra's a day now. Its got the same amount of seats. I know it has reliability issues which doesn't go in its favour. OK its not as mod-able but I used to seriously frown upon mod-ing cars. So Misinformed or not at the time I would have purchased an RX7 if I was going to have a hardtop car.

The handling on the aero is only compromised when you take the roof out and strut braces seem to assist with this problem adequately enough. I dunno what you mean about the look at me aspect of the car I mean I am not an attention seeker (my hair naturally went orange and keith from the prodigy like for my mates wedding:D ) As an extra on a car I can't say that it changes the vehicles overall impression, as you said it doesn't come off that often and with the roof on its hardly any different to the hardtop (remember the thread a while back with that black one that you couldn't tell from quite a good quality photo if it was an aero or not?)

OMFG I hope so much that it's not true  Been reading the RX / Supe / Aero stuff above & i could have had any one of the 3. I chose mine because although it has got a presence on the road that a Mondeo would never have, I didn't want to scream at everybody.

The aero put me off ofr just that reason (and it was 2 years older for the same money)

The RX7 put me off for reliability reasons & i think it looks too smooth :sly: Sorta slippery little sucker I think.

I certainly don't awant to scream "look at me" , but after owning it for only a few hours it had some comments. One old friend saw it & apparently thinks the sign business is now "doing well", my 8 year old nephew insisted I took him out cos it is a "cool car" ........ NEXT :innocent: On the other hand, my mother in law asked Donna "WHAT on earth is THAT" which I assume means she thinks it's a god awful piece of jap junk !!! in fairness I was over shadowed by pops Renault 5 campus Auto :p

Truthfully, I hate to be stared at, but it's nice when you see somebody glance at the car & know it's something to stop us old farts becoming boring geriatrics :flame Dev
