osso
I applied for a Senior Software Engineering role for a company based in kent through a job agency on tuesday. It wasnt until the following day i found out that the job agency forwarded my cv to the company in question without my knowledge. Normally at this stage i would speak to the agency and find out about the company, and the company's location. Anyway, I got an email from the job agency yesterday, saying that the company are very keen to speak to me as soon as possible, reason being is that the experience and skill set on my cv is better than that of their strongest candiate. of course at this stage my head swelled. I was then told the company is based in Dartford Kent. I and went ahead and told the agency that i would be willing to have a chat to the IT development manager. we spoke last night, he was keen to show me around the company, and introduce me to his hardware and software team leaders, he also told me that they were going to offer their highest candiate the job yesterday. again my head swelled! I said i would give it the night to sleep on it, as i have serious doubt about commuting to dartford from the hastings area! It would take me 2.5 hours to get to darkford station, then i would have to make my way to the company, this would be approx 6 hours travelling a day, on top of working 7.5 hours! ITS CRAZY! based on this i am likely to turn it down. on a good day, I can actually get to the m25 from hastings in 45 minutes, but it would be hell during the rush hour! wont be cheap either commuting in the supra! I am confident they would offer around 38 ~ 40k a year, the job itself does sound very interesting, and im sure the job statifaction would be good too, but i cant justify the travel times! Question is, would you do it?
supRo
Mate, that doesn't seem worth it with the commuting, just my opinion. I've been doing Software QA for 7 years so know what sort of salary is good taking in account commuting.
Faye
I wouldn't park the Supe in Dartford either!!!!
osso
Some good points there lol I have considered contracting, however most contracting jobs today are only renewed every 3 months! i remember a few years ago before the IT crash, they used to be at least 6 months, or 12 months if u were lucky. Burna
Why commute in the Supra? I would just buy something to put the miles on if it's quicker to go be car. Still alot of time travelling each day though. Does sound like a good opportunity, well done

Faye
The problem is that the infrastructure anywhere outside Dartford is a nightmare. M2/A2 - usually blocked up M25 - no need to comment M26 - quite often blocked up. Yes there are nice areas, but you do have to be very well off to afford them these days. I forgot you were originally from eastbourne or bexhill way! but yep you're right, if i was living in the maidstone area, it would be perfect. Unfortunately I currently own a flat which i am slowly decorating, need to fit a new kitchen as well, I will need another 6months before its finished. i have considered putting this place up for rent one day. Faye
Well if you think it will only takes six months to get your current place viable for renting, why not do the commute, it seems a shame to turn the job down.
osso
The commute scares me! I've had it easy for the last 8 years, working and living in Hastings! I woke up today at 8:45am, had a shower, went to work at 9:15am, and got there just before 9:25am! I do have another telephone interview with a company in brighton for the same kinda role and salary, so im keen to hear what they have to say. Supragal
I have to agree with you, I think the commute would be a killer. Maybe for a few weeks but no more. If it was the ultimate, one and only be all and end off muther of all jobs then it would be worth it.
toyotasuprauk
Personally I think the commute would be horrible and you would be so tired with no time to do anything including working on your flat.
raymanuk
That commute is a killer mate. You will basically be getting up, going to work, work, come home and go to bed..... I think you need to ask the question of what sort life you want to lead. Do you work to live or live to work? IMHO if that is what you want go for it! Cheers,
monkey76364
Dont do it its not worth it. and with all the road workd in dartford it takes me 45 mins to do 7 miles though each morning Bloody great money but not good travel. You would have no life outside of work.
osso
My thoughts exactly, I agree with you all, I dont want work to live, with work to dominate my life! as raymanuk said, the commute would be a killer, I would be getting up, going to work, work, come home then i'd be lucky to find time for a wank before going to bed! I dont think this would be the muther of all jobs either!
Faye
I've always been pretty flexible on commuting, I used to drive 60 miles min in a day, and now have progressed that to about 50 minutes on tube and train coupled with a 2 mile walk! I don't have a life during the week, but its a good job for promotion prospects. Keith has a similar problem, but I think it would be a whole lot worse if he had any easy time of it and I didn't, as I'd get very resentful. Suprash
Your all pussies, lol, Im away from my door for 15 hours a day, travelling from Basingstoke to London, but there are up sides and down sides to it: But I have the pleasure of working 12 hour shift, and as I get up to 6 days off at a time due to shift patterns I dont mind existing for the company when on my shift days on. But the company is good and the money is even better. But I wouldnt consider this if its was 9-5, Mon - Fri................... EDITED: And I would always put myself out as far as jobs are concerned, as answer this: IF you stay where you are, where could you realisticly be in 5 years time, position and money. From my experience if I had stayed at certian companies I know I wouldnt be earning what I am now, you have to take the chance to see what happens and where it takes you. Muffleman
My little rule is no commuting if it takes an hour (or longer) to get to the office. I don't mind 45-50 minutes each way, but anymore than that and forget it. I live in Horsham and used to commute to Erith, near Dartford. TBH you're going the right way round the M25, anti-clock 6 to 1 will be okay in the morning and 1 to 6 clockwise in the evening, but there are gonna be days where you wish you had fitted a fridge in the boot and a commode on the back seat !!! I currently commute from Horsham to New Addington, takes me 45mins each way and that is M23 J10 to M25 J6 - it's not bad at all.
Class One
I do a 160mile round trip each working day. I do a 12 hour shift so with leaving the house at 0500 and getting home between 2000-2030 depending on traffic. When I work nights i take the train leaving home at 1545 and getting home at about 0915 the following morning. My shifts are generally 5 on 5 off. I've now been doing this for about 6 years. Before i used to live in London about 8 miles from my workplace and by public transport my commute would take anything between 45 mins to 1 1/2 hrs! Would I swop? Would I f**k! I happily do my 3 hours or so commuting so i can live in a nice village on the edge of the Cotswolds and my daughter can go to a small village school and I can escape the daily madness of my job and London. Ian C
Plus your job allows to do 160mph so the commute is only an hour -Ian
