listy
Right, first off, please refrain from the "a w58 is no good for bpu" etc as it wont help, and will just really annoy me, as as we all know, we are trigger happy us Mods So..... NA-TT W58 BPU On the way home from the shops, all of a sudden there was a horrendous rattling churning kind of sound. The faster I went, the worse it got. Put the clutch in, and it quietened down. I pulled over, and had a listen, and there was a VERY feint rattling from somewhere low down and at the back of the engine/behind the engine, was hard to tell. Revving the engine out of gear made no difference to the sound. Am I right in thinking this rules out the engine? Luckily, a friend of mine went past and came back to tow me home. He suggested putting it in second (engine off) so the power steering would work, but the horrible rattling sound came back. As soon as I took it out of gear, the noise went away. Unfortunately, I will not be getting a video of it running for analysis as, in all honesty, with the noise it was making, I don't have the guts to run it, even stood still. So, the question really is......what has it done to itself? I think it's chewed the gearbox, but I'm no expert and not sure. Best case scenario I can think of it that my clutch and/or flywheel have given up completely and cracked/broken up. Worst case, bottom end has gone. I really could cry right now. Looks like I'm going to have to take advantage of the finance options Whifbitz offer, as Paul is only down the road. Pulley
Most probably the w58 IMO Doubt it's anything to do with engine Possible the clutch
Pudsey
Seeing as you say it does it when its in gear, my money would be on the box giving its swan song. A failed thrust bearing can make a lot of noise too, although you would hear this with it out of gear too. Hope you manage to get it rectified, one way or another. listy
Thanks guys. If I can find a way, it may be a good excuse to go 6 speed but I doubt anyone will let me pay them monthly for a Getrag
skippyboyo1
Were you flat out when it went? In my experience gearboxes don't just smash driving steady.
listy
Lately, she has been getting a good blast seeing as it's been nice and dry and sunny. I have been driving her quite hard at times. To be fair, it was only a matter of time until it gave up.
jay200bhp
it does sound like its time for a new box to me . what will you choose ?
listy
It all depends on what Mr Whiffin can do for me really. I won't know what direction I'm going until tomorrow. What I do find odd though, is that all gears went at the same time Makes me wonder if it is something else related to the box, but not the box itself..... listy
I just remembered something else too. When stationary and out of gear, revving the engine made no difference to the sound. Am I right in thinking this pretty much rules out the engine?
Benjy
Sounds like input shaft bearings but usually they'll go progressively. If you run it to get a video, it'll do no more damage if you've already lunched something mate
Chris88
My money would be on the clutch / release bearing. If it makes any funny noise (however faint) when stationary and out of gear and when the gearbox isn't turning it would seem pretty unlikely that the noise is comming from the gearbox. A gearbox is only stationary with the clutch depressed. In or out of gear.

listy
Should of got a sixer. To be honest, with the amount spent on it since I got it, I would have been better off

I don't remember there being any noise when I was being towed (engine off in neutral) but being towed in gear there was, unless the clutch was depressed. listy
Right, I started her up today (with my eyes closed, and gritting my teeth ) The only way I can describe the sound is like two metal plates rattling/banging against each other. So, I'm kind of leaning towards it being clutch/flywheel related, rather than gearbox. She should be heading to Whifbitz South Wales in the next couple of days for diagnosis, but I'm pretty happy it will be a quick fix.

I had an Astra GSI which sounded just the same after some of the flywheel bolts came loose and it started rattling around.
