peter richards Posted March 10, 2013 Share Posted March 10, 2013 hi guys , had my air con re gassed with an offer from ATS a few months ago , all went ok , but noticed that it wasnt cold anymore , so went back and fair play they re did the test , put in some dye , but the fella couldnt see any leaks under the flouresant light . he said if i can find it and obviously repair or replace whatever is the problem he would re gas it for me . question is how do i find the leak ? peter richards Posted March 10, 2013 Author Share Posted March 10, 2013 well if its fooked then thats the way its going to stay , got a funny feeling the cars going to cost me a lot of money from now on, rads gone , got one coming this week from dude so by the time i get that fitted wont be far off 400 notes . showing signs of its age now i think . jonc Posted March 10, 2013 Share Posted March 10, 2013 Only real way to find a leak on a fridge gas system is to put it under a pressure test using Nitrogen and either listen or use Snoop (or any soapy water solution). circuit dies do not always show up Normal areas to go are: Compressor seals Condensor (next to radiator) Evaporator (in the dashboard) Charging valves If you don't use the AC very often the comprssor seals tend to go (should use the AC monthly to keep it going). Any decent motor AC technician (NOT ATS, KWIK FIT etc!) will be able to put a pressure test on and find out where its leaking from. It may also be that you have a lack of air flow across the condensor and the HP side gets too high. It is illegal to charge a fridge circuit with a known leak but the kwik fit centres tend to get away with it. I would get a fridge tech to pressure test the system to find the leak then make a decision whether you want to repair or not. Trouble with AC is you have the expense of the gas work around any repair that you do. Hope this helps Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

peter richards Posted March 10, 2013 Author Share Posted March 10, 2013 ok thanks , ill see if i can get it checked , might take it to where i first had it gassed years ago , if its an easy fix ill get it done , if not then ill leave it as there are to many other jobs that have priority, rad first ,then rear tyres to start with , lights on the dash , finding someone who knows what they are doing for that , not much chance of that down here . Radio Posted March 14, 2013 Share Posted March 14, 2013 I had this problem last year. My wifes car is serviced by my local fords and so they said they could recharge my supra for £30. Had it done and it was great for 3 days then stopped being cold. Took it back for them to look at. they said they had done a gas check after the re-gas and all was ok. They recharged it and did another check using the ultra violet light and it showed a tiny pin prick of a leak at the back of the reciever (long vertical tube thing) which was old age corrosion. they ordered a new one from toyota and fiited it and all has been ok since. (cost just over £300) They said that they enjoyed doing it as they had never taken the front off a supra before) I got the information off this website for them. SteveC Posted March 14, 2013 Share Posted March 14, 2013 Mine had a very slow leak and a refill would last for about six months, but different refilling places couldn't locate the problem with dye or a sniffer.
