2JZ GE Overheating

Whilst at 70 on the motorway, I noticed steam from the bonnet and the temperature shoot up rapidly.

Upon opening the bonnet, there was massive pressure and steam coming from the expansion tank and the back right of the bulkhead(passenger side)

Heaters were stone cold and carpet was dry.

Any ideas?

  • 2 weeks later...

Right, removed the thermostat, and topped up the coolant. Had a sniffer test done on the car and it came back clear. There's no milky oil/coolant mixture anywhere.

Car still overheats and there's a hose that goes into the back of the block that's pissing out steam when overheating.

The heaters will not get hot however, the carpet is dry.

There also appears to be a leak at the back of the water pump somewhere.

Anybody got any ideas what's causing my issue?

I think it may be water pump?

I hadn't replaced the fluids recently actually.

Unfortunately not Brad, ill send you a PM shortly mate.

It still doesn't explain the leak at the hose at the rear f the block or the leak around the rear of the water pump...:/

Really racking my brains on this one!

Possibly the blades on you water pump have broken making the pump as good as useless. Not sure but thought there were two types one with plastic blades that go brittle and another with metal blades. If you are getting steam out the back of the block hoses you have some serious hot spots, I would get it sorted before you over heat too far. :(

Have you done what Alex suggested in post 2.

I'd say this is part of your problem ;)

Almost certainly will not be the actual pump. It will be a £1 core plug that sits in the back of the rear housing. Such a common problem and I have never understood why only that core plug fails so often and if you pop any of the others out, they will most likely appear mint. I have a brand new one in my toolbox if you want it.
