Well yesterday we got the engine into the bay for some measurements. We had done a lot of research before hand using the collision repair manuals to make sure the engine would fit with out any major surgery to the supra Chassis. Fit is actually quite good, with only some modification needed to rear member to allow us to place the engine and inch or 2 furthur back.

The reason for this swap was more a personal one, as i am a bit of a tech freak. Power did not come into the equation, swapping any other v8 or building a big bhp 2jzgte motor wouldnt be as challenging. This project wont reach completion any time soon due to the technology used in this engine and the constraints

of the infomation availabe for its contrrol and manipulation.

To run the engine and gearbox using the OE electrics and ECM's EDU's is a no go. Lexus use a mixture of CANBUS and BEAN networks as well as some very advanced security options. These networks all rely on constant data flow between each other. Whilst CANBUS hacking was an option, BEAN is lexus own comms gateway which would need to be reverse engineered in order to manipulate it. Even a simple gearchange is relayed though these networks. The Control of the Transmisson may be possible still by directly contolling the valve body Solenoids etc etc but i will still be going with a manual geabox conversion.

The engine is very advanced, and uses a lot of technology that will be common place in the Future. We have good old port injection i.e. injector placed in intake manifold, coupled with Direct Cylinder injection. Direct injection uses special injectors placed in the head which inject fuel under high pressure (up to 2000psi from mech pumps run of the inlet cams) directly into the cylinder during the Intake and compression Stroke. This allows for greater engine compression ratios (11.8:1 in this application) even in forced induction applications.

Another advancement is VVTI-E. Although running normal dual VVT-I, dual VVT-IE is also used. The VVTIE units contain an electric motor so does not depend on oil pessure like VVT-I. Basically a motor spins at the same speed as the cam. To advance the cam, the motor spins faster, and to retard the cam its spins slower.

These technology advancements all require new control and tuning concepts which are not that readily available on the market today, and so will require a lot of research on how the manufactures control them.

Hopefully an ECU company will get on board with this to develop for the future too.

My ramblings and technical research and swap is available here for anyone who wants to follow this project.

As said this will be a long term project so prepare for the long haul lol

The Syvecs guys reversed engineered the Nissan GTR, maybe this could be a another project for the S8 :D

Yeah Orido removed the DI system (pumps removed from heads) and isnt controlling VVTIE (nowt plugged in) so waste of an m880...

Ive a lot of the research started Wez, did drop Gareth an email but didnt reply. Pity though as DI will be used in most cars by 2016. Link scratched their heads for a few moments and said no chance cant hep and went back to controlling coal fires.

Life racing coulda have applied there own systems but i dont run an F1 team.

Adaptonic however are very interested and will be scoping an FT86 which uses the same DI system to get a better understanding of how the ECU contols the each DI EDU (only 8 injector contol signals, 1 Spill valve signal, 1 diagnostic, and 1 injector feed back signal - which isnt needed) per bank

VVT-IE will be fun..Calculate a rotational speed, then calculate a speed that will translate to a +40 or -40 degree angle of variance of 1 rotation, then apply that speed to the motor. Thankfully the VVTIE units also have an inbuilt EDU with only 2 inputs from the stock ecu and 2 Outputs.

sure it will be a head melter if nothing else lol

Just a quick update. We have decided to run the AA80E box, along with the IS-F Differential. We will be controlling the box via custom contoller with paddle shift changes.

The DI fueling is still a major headache though i have more information on it now including schematics, wiring, control etc etc

This is the most important part of this swap.

Max Orido decided to by pass DI, and unfortunately it caused major engine failure.

The DI injectors heated up as they had no fuel flowing though them (an inbuilt mechanism for cooling) and caused Det melting one piston, and melting an injector tip in another cylinder.

Probably one of the easier swaps to do TBH, bit of fabbing on the sump, gs300 mounts with 10mm spacers, back tubby intake tight but no probs with single conversion
