OIL spill

Has anyone read the scale of the oil spill of the US coast - Its quite alarming !!!

The well is 5000 ft under the sea ,then it taps into the oil field 35000 ft into the earths crust!!

The oil/gas under the ocean floor in the field is at 170000 PSI !!!!!!!, This when it let go caused the collapse of the whole rig

There is now a 5 foot pipe open, gushing oil out with all that pressure behind it

This is going to be one technical feat to stop it ; they are considering drilling a second well ,to try to relieve pressure, and considering building a dome to "drop" on top of the pipe/well to stop it

Thousands of gallons of oil is escaping into the sea per day ,bear in mind 1 litre can contaminate 200000 litres of water for wildlife and essential plankton etc

This could take a bit more than Bruce willis to fix this one -answers on a postcard to BP ....and quick!!

If it wipes out the yanks i'm all in favour

Don't think it will affect the 'yanks' think it may have more of an affect on the bird/marinelife

Not to mention the price of a barrel of oil, which will no doubt hit the pumps shortly

The enviromental impact could be huge , it would continue to pour out oil for years unless stopped

The problem is its 5000 ft below the sea , the water pressure is over 2000 psi at that depth ,and only remote vehicles can be used , plus the oil is under huge pressure from below -just how do you stop it?

Quite mind blowing that! What ever it is they should have a backup plan of what they can do. Question is how it takes to implement it! Thousands of wild life will be killed & the sea water contaminated. This needs drastic action (no not Bruce willis).

Obama turned up with snorkel, flippers, and a huge ball of duct tape -- after some consultation ,and a brief look at his book of sounbites called it "a disaster of unprecedented magnitude "

BP will blame the rig operators, who in turn blame the safety valve manufactures ,who in turn will go bankrupt instantly and say "stupid place to put Fish, and dolphins anyway , what with all that oil underneath the gulf of mexico"

Cynical Me?

The rig is actually leased and not owned by BP....but they are getting blamed, the media is doing a fantastic job so far of pointing the finger....

I'm pretty sure as already mentioned that the reservior pressure is 17,000psi. The reservoir is also at 18,000ft vertical depth, not 35,000ft.

The problem does not solely lie with the Blow out preventer valve (BOP) that has failed. The riser that transports the oil from the seabed BOP to rig at surface is now critically damaged due to the sucken BP/Transocean rig and is also venting.

..but will it take off from a conveyor belt?

If that is true (and there is no reason to doubt as yet) then that would cause oil prices to rise rapidly and also bring the date of 'peak oil' forward too.

Worrying. Even moreso when you read about the dwindling bee population in the US. A third of all colonies dies over the winter.

Oil and food shortages. It's been nice knowing you all.

  • 5 weeks later...

Well a month on ,and $23 million a day, still it leaks--

They really, really need ideas on a postcard now, they have tried Bruce Willis, but he insisted that he would wear a vest, and it would have breached BP dress code....

I'm pretty sure that oil rig was pumping more oil than it's currently spilling in a day anyway? So surely only fears will cause fluctuation in oil prices.

You might also find that the dollar might end up dropping after all that spending on trying to get it fixed... which means petrol prices might be dropping for us in the UK.

That's some of my thoughts if you were worried about oil prices here in the UK.

It aint the rig that pumps that oil, its all subsea so the rig works on one well then moves to the next one.

Im also dubious about the 17000psi pressure, that seems offy high IMO.

They have suspended drilling in the Gulf for 6 months, in general it will decrease productivity and there for increase oil prices..! Plus I believe that major oil companies will have to increase over seas drilling so they can meet their increased of productivity targets..!

Halliburton did a nitrogen cement plug to abandon job 16hrs prior to the accident, they also had 16ppg mud in the hole so what could of happened is that when they displaced the well with stupid sea water 8.66ppg it would of underbalanced the well creating force onto the cmt plug which probably hadn't hardened yet. Also the nitrogen escapes to the path of least resistance and that pushed the casing up onto the BOP that wouldn't been a problem because the BOP is able to cut it and shut it off but there most of been drill pipe in the well as they would have been preparing to cmt another plug. The Rams is not able to cut through the BOP and DP...!

Next the well would of taken a gas kick and with water in the hole, the gas would of come straight past the BOP and ignited and boooom..!

They should of never displaced the well with water at those depths before setting an Retainer and another plug on top of the retainer...!
