mathew
this has been playing on my mind for the last week or so. i really cant decide on having laminate flooring or carpet in the lounge. ideally i would love a real wood floor but its slightly out of my budget. ive seen some really nice laminates in various places for resonable prices but i also like the appeal of carpet as it seems more homely and warm. what are the pros and cons of each and which would people prefer? Laminate is great for vomit and spilled drinks!! Case closed..... If you have pets then laminate can be a real nightmare, we have a dog that is moulting for England at the moments and even though we vacuum every day it's like tumbleweed sweeping accross the floor........ AlanM
I put laminate flooring down in lounge a couple of years ago and it is coming up and carpet going down in another month. Its cold - perception I know, but have had enough of it. I can use the laminate elsewhere, like in the office
Homer
In a living room, carpet every time - unless it gets seriously hard use (kids, mud, etc!) Had a proper hardwood floor in my last house and it was not nice. Always needed slippers otherwise the feet were cold, it also wasn't very comfy to walk on, which you really expect your living room to be. Modern houses might be better in terms of the heat, but there's no way I'd have one again.
Shadow Beast
we had laminate, was very cold and not cosy in the evening, always needed slippers on, dog fur was a nightmare, in the end we just carpeted straight over the top of it, lot better IMO. richie
j_jza80
Unfortunately, even with gains in heating efficiency over the last few years, any heating system with radiators is heating the top half / three quaters of the room. The floors neglected somewhat unless you have underfloor heating fitted. For that reason I would always fit carpet in 'Living areas' (IE lounge, dining room, bedrooms) Laminate is great for 'utility areas' (IE kitchen, hallways, bathrooms etc) And as others have said, it makes the room look cold, where I think living areas should look cosy. Just my 2p worth.
gordy07
Flooring defo, the amount of drinks my 3yr old soon has spilled:innocent: and the mud that gets walked in. Its also easy to clean once a carpets really stained its fooked. You could get some nice rugs to sit the feet on if you still want the comfort:sly:
mathew
its only going to be me living there and no pets (apart from a few dogs i may take home on the odd saturday night:eyebrows:). im swaying towards carpet thinking about it. i think id have laminate in the hallway for definate. whats laminate like for a kitchen floor? i know you can get the aqua type for areas which may get wet but would it look out of place (i like the old wood looking type of laminate with the grain and not just the plain stuff) in the kitchen? gordy07
Its fine for the kitchen, tiles are better but as long as you dont flood the place every couple of days it will do the trick
grahamc
I have laminate in the lounge and do not mind it... Have a nice BIG gas heater in the lounge for when cold. You think fur tumbleweeds are bad try cleaning fur embedded carpets!!! Now thats a nightmare!! Laminate is also very easy for cleaning up, quick sweep and then vacuum the whats left. Spills on a carpet are a night mare! I have 2 german sheppards and yes, the malting is horrific some days...
