I would have to disagree on the desktop firewall point. As long as the antimalware is doing its job, why do we need yet another layer of applications running to warn of every outbound connection? netstat -n -a is good enough should there be suspicion, and Windows XPs NAT-style firewall (block anything which is not a response to a legitimate request) is more than good enough, and also unobstrusive and not resource hungry (unlike the 'Internet Security Suites'). Just my feelings anyway.

No you're right. Avast doesn't detect anything, however they aren't viruses, they're just adware. don't like adware though, so it's 1 each for NOD32 and AVG, and 0 for Avast on this one hmmmmmmmmmm

Ah, no you're right. The downloadable file near the bottom of the page is detected as "multiple infiltrations" and is blocked by NOD. I'll try Avast now.. 1 sec!

I know, but there are other free ones, and paying £20/year isn't much for good protection. Avast is much better and still free. NOD32 is great but costs about £20/year.

It doesn't fair well in the industry tests, in fact it does abysmally. I'm not saying it causes problems, it just doesn't catch many viruses or other malware.

oops! I keep going to this haulage company near the Airport and re-installing their server. I re-install the O/S (which was Win2K adv server) and Citrix, then hand over to the huge office in India, who does the rest. I've been there three times now, and keep telling them that a Win2K machine with a public IP address, no firewall whatsoever, and the administrator password which is the same as the domain, is going to get broken again very quickly. So third time now, and we went with Server 2003 instead this time, and they now assure me they'll be putting in a VPN. At least they pay quickly!!

NOD32 is indeed exceptionally good. I have it running like clockwork on many many computers. The only reason I don't have it on mine here is that I wanted to do a long term test of Avast for when I'm sending computers out to strangers, and that seems pretty good too, but not as unobtrusive as NOD. zonealarm though...

oh and AVG isn't exactly a step in the right direction! Avast seems to be pretty good for a free one (thanks to Jake for that one)

I think, honestly, £45 to sell a £600 laptop is ridiculous. If all six laptops sell on eBay, to people paying via PayPal, then that'll be £270 in fees.

Is it f*ck! I'd much rather have cash deposited into my account. Paypal is the buyers benefit. I've had a few people who will only buy if they can pay via Paypal, and they have offered to pay extra for the privelidge. They feel it offers them some financial security in case I try to rip them off.

Well, I have absorbed the cost of Paypal (£20) in the laptops I have listed on eBay. However, if someone wants to pay a different way, I will de-absorb that £20 and reduce the price accordingly. Seems fair enough to me. See here
