  1. Gaz, I do admire the fact you're a man that sticks to his guns when he believes wholeheartedly that he is correct. I'm off to bed, hopefully we'll all agree eventually!
  2. I have read the question, and to quote At no point does it state which part of the plane relatively speaking the conveyor belt's speed is inversed against. I, like Ian C have read it as inversely to the relative rotational speed of the wheels. Not of the relative speed of the body of the plane to the earth/body it is based on. I think unfortunately that part of the theory has been badly worded and can possibly be interpreted very openly.
  3. Ok, let's go on the skateboard/escalator analogy. Forget anything about taking off, we're trying to get the relative speed concept going. Imagine you are on the escalator, yes it speeds up whilst you're on the skateboard if the skateboard's *wheels* speed up. Now imagine there is a rope you are holding onto on this 500 mile long escalator. The rope is not moving, it is stationary. Nor is the air moving Pull yourself along the rope. You will get to the end eventually yes? Which means you have moved relative to the bottom part of the escalator, even if it is moving.
  4. Gaz, Think of the air the jet engines are displacing. The plane is not putting power out via the wheels, but rather out via the back of the turbines - force against the air which is totally different and not affected by the movement of this 'treadmill/runway from hell'. The wheels themselves are freewheeling, hence not delivering power to the treadmill. To try and use another analogy imagine you have an escalator like in the airports - nice and flat and long - BUT it's partially broken. The stairs are going backwards but the bannister isn't moving. The wheels of the plane are your legs. Maintain a constant speed, you stay stationary. Run faster, let's say like the treadmill the stairs compensate and speed up too. So if you were only using you legs (akin to delivering power via the wheels of the plane) yes you would stay stationary relatively speaking. Now imagine your legs somehow automatically freewheel like a plane's wheels (let's say you're on a skateboard or rollerskates with no friction) and you decide to move yourself with your arms (the jet engines in this case) and pull yourself along yanking on the bannisters which are not moving backwards (the jets working against the air which in the experiment is not blowing backwards) - which remember are stationary relative to the stair part. Think you'd move along? If the answer's no, please point out the bit where you think is wrong and you think you would in fact be still stationary.
  5. Depends. In what medium are you driving through? And are you driving in a straight line? Will Lorenz come into play? Do you have tachyon emitting headlights? If not, do you want a set? Oh no, ignore my first question, as even if it was a medium that slowed down light, you would yourself still be at the same speed as the light you're emitting. Negating that idea.
  6. I work for JP Morgan. I don't think we've got much leased lines, we just seem to buy fibre/IP and have it private. We've got I think 4 OC48's and some OC192's on the go now too, which I'm lead to believe are fairly meaty IP wise. Fibre as it's all dark I believe is just constrained by the DWDM we pump down it.
  7. Heh, I'm quite broad on the storage front. I deal primarily with enterprise level SAN based equipment really. Work on IBM, Hitachi and EMC storage systems, disk and tape, virtual tape libraries as well as implementing a transatlantic fibre-over-ip network from south-coast UK to mid-east US for tape traffic and have a tri-site disk-replication DR model setup which spans the US and the EMEA region. Got certification with McData, Brocade and soon Cisco for network and security implementation as well as dabbling in performance tuning. O/S wise I work on iSeries, zSeries and trying to do AIX/Linux. Mainly storage management software on these platforms. We're the people that had 45 miles of the M3 dug up last year to have some dark-fibre laid from Dorset... mmm.. expensive. I hope I can consider myself maybe not an expert, but not an amateur
  8. Ever looked at the Dobro box? http://www.reghardware.co.uk/2008/01/14/data_robotics_rolls_out_droboshare/ Mmmm 4-drive expandable goodness
  9. It's the case of laying the infrastructure, current pipes and exchanges just don't have the capacity and fibre is very delicate stuff, the switching gear has some very complex asics in it too, so bigger exchange boxes would be needed if they had any switching gear locally. Also cost of laying fibre, digging up the road if you need to etc is very costly, hence NTL and Government pilots for laying cable up the sewers as a lot more people have toilets than they do connections to fibre junctions
  10. Pah, NTL's shoddy fibre at the moment. I believe though that they are running fibre around the country, certainly I have a nice -10db attenuator on my cable modem cos the laser's so strong. I don't know if it's shortwave from the exchange to the modem, certainly not taking it apart and looking down, I value my retinas but do doubt that it's longwave. They are though doing a pilot in Newcastle I think with fibre-up-the-toilet (they're laying fibres via the sewers). Hopefully that'll take us to the level of fibre we've seen in servers for years. I use 10Gb fibre at work. 20Mb is a joke, they should be able to provide 1Gb by around 2009-2010 UK-Wide if the pilot goes well. They nearly chose Bournemouth! Our uni and council are all wired up with fibre-out-the-toilet. Simon (Your resident storage/fibre channel/ficon/network expert(ish))
  11. I really hope for you J that the infection goes away with the anti-biotics (they're penicillin based if i recall rightly). I had an infection that came back with a vengance 4 weeks after the anti-biotics stopped, went to dentists - x-ray, saw infection back, 20 minutes later was in the chair having my root drilled out and cleaned then filled... Sorry to fill you with the horror stories dude, but if after the biotics and you still got the pain, **go back**, better than becoming a toothless ol' man and in pain, as if the root dies then your tooth and gum are gonna rot from the inside out, which luckily I haven't had myself. Lovely having a friend who's wife works at a private practice. Hear too many horror stories tho
  12. I think the pub was called the Golden Lion, it's a business park not too far off the M3 junction for the A33
  13. Oh and I really feel for you mate, I *definitely* know what you're going through. I neglected my teeth for years, one year bit the bullet because I was seeing purple spots in front of my eyes due to the pain, I had 4 hours sleep in 5 days and was a wreck mentally and physically. So in the next 12 months I had: 11 fillings 2 root canals (one for an infected root like you're going through - on a front tooth!) 3 wisdom teeth removed - under general anes.. then spent the next 24 hours throwing up because of the morphine to knock me out - when in the prep room the anaesthesiologist (excuse the spelling) said - 'give him quite a bit - he's a big lad' and I knew that was trouble..
  14. co-codamol (paracetamol and codeine in one tab! whoo!) Or co-proximol but I think you can't get that without prescription. (Paracetamol, codeine and I think some numbing or anti-inflammitory) Maybe 700 CC's of Tennessee's finest bourbon otherwise
  15. Saw you near the pub (golden lion?) on the roundabout on Friday afternoon, had a quick wave.
  16. Top achievement mate, I'm always glad people have the will power to do this. Hey, now you're light enough to go for a tandem-freefall (Have to be under 14st normally)... fancy trying one? They're great fun

I was wondering if we could as a club have some sort of Man/Person of The Year award? Just some recognition for the people and the club spirit on here. I don't know what we could give away as prizes, maybe just be able to have recognition, let people put something in their sig to show they're recognised as a valued person on here. Maybe we could even get people a little mkivsupra.net plaque or something? I apologise in advance if this has been thought of before! Trying to think of categories and nomination system to then go onto voting, please add any suggestions for categories: Most sound technical advisor (maybe have Electrical, engine, ICE etc categories) Best Official Trader (overall) Best Customer Service Best Trader (value) Best Private Seller Most friendly Admin Most friendly member Most 'Random' member Best Club Spirit (Member) Best Car (Unmodified) Best Car (Modified) Best Thread (Either just useful, or plain funny ) I think that'd do as a starter for 10. Si
  18. Hi Jay, Hope car isn't giving you any other troubles apart from not feeling as snug on the rear as your MK3, shame to hear that even :-( You're right about tires, shocks etc, it was all properly aligned. I think I had the diff fluid changed about a year ago. Didn't bump into a single kerb or pothole since last alignment, but you know how it is with tracking. Yes the wheels are a lot bigger than OEM, I didn't change any of the geometry when getting these fitted, but the car came from japan with 18's (9.5J rear, now 10J rear), so it could have had some changes made for all I know. I just knew it wore nice and evenly, I felt the handling was fine, so if it ain't broke, don't fix it philosophy was taken The car does *not* have ABS (after having someone pull out in front of my once at a very short distance) I found the fronts locked up (waits for someone to talk about cadence braking...) I was on 245/40/18's when I started with the car, eventually going between 265-275/35/18's, and just found them more firmly balanced than the 245s. I found the back end skitty and that's what caused me to change the shocks and upper wishbone arms, which I found cured the problems I had with rear-end instability. Afraid I cannot 100% verify that it's not got an LSD on it, been in cars with LSD, have one now, and when I had the occasional slide due to cold weather/diesel/oil, the rear did handle like it didn't have an LSD, but this is just IMHO, I could be wrong. Always had it MOT'd assuming it was non-LSD, as didn't want them to test the rear brakes and do any damage.. Glad to see you on the forum bud Si
  19. Seems the friendly local constabulary are doing a crackdown on number plates.... http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/dorset/7215971.stm Just to make anyone aware that doesn't read about it..
  20. Afternoon All, I'm getting a GT35 roller bearing turbo off Turbo Dynamics. They've offered to port shroud the intake housing on it, which they say will allow the secondary blades on the turbo to draw in more air in turn giving the turbo a better response rate. I believe this is machining groves into the intake housing so that there's little channels past the primary blades to allow this to occur (excuse my terms, I'm not an engineer at heart). Has anyone had this done on their turbo? Is it really beneficial against the cost (£195 ex vat) to get this done? Thanks for any feedback Simon
  21. I've been a few months ago, went for the a la carte lunch for the missus' birthday. Be prepared to book quite a few weeks in advance! The hotel is lovely, the restaurant is indeed lovely (As was also I found out... Tiffany's Jeweller's down the road in Bond St - Don't go there with money!) The lunch was absolutely fantastic. Lamb was the best I've ever tasted, so too were the desserts. I had Tuna 3-ways for the starter, I didn't realise a part of it would be a slab of yellow fin tuna - RAW - in Vinegar, sprinkled with black pepper. The texture I had to say was interesting... Yes, the ambience is quite regal. Been in posher hotels, but it's very hushed there. Be prepared to wear a nice shirt + suit, lady in a dress etc. No jeans, trainers, short-sleeves allowed. Oh and the tour of the kitchen was very interesting too! As it was the missus' birthday too, the Matre De (excuse the spelling) found out, inbetween the main course and desert they brought out a little cake with a nice caramel 'Happy Birthday' spooned round the rim of this huge dessert plate.
  22. Full GT5 looking like September for Japan release, December for Europe/UK
  23. £30 from a local gameshop in Dorset. It's on ebay for about £27-30 + postage. Play.com will be doing the UK one for £30.... I was just impatient Bah! Toyota aren't in the Prologue! Acura / Alfa Romeo / Audi / BMW / Cheev / Diahatsu / Dodge / Ferrari / Ford / Honda / Lancia / Lexus / Lotus / Mazda / Merc / Mitsi / Nissan / Renault / Subaru / Suzuki / TVR / VW. All jap manufacturers nearly bar Toyota!
  24. Burnout Paradise is an interesting game, got that too, but saw GT5 today and had to buy it. It is an import copy from Japan. The 5Gb update is still downloading...
  25. Just bought this from a shop down the road Just whacked it in, it's installed 5121Mb of data onto the HDD from the disc, now it's checked and there's an update! What's it doing now you may ask? *sighs* It's downloading a new 5120Mb update over the interweb! I may get to play it later tonight... even with a 4mb cable modem it's gonna take a fair while. Anyone else have it?
