I think Whittard's may be one... but it's not exactly a retail giant. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/business/7796751.stm If you look around your home and wonder what you may defer buying (cooker/microwave/sofa/computer/posh food/posh clothing) then that'll probably reflect what may go under. So Comet/PCWorld/DFS/Waitrose/Monsoon would be good guesses. B&Q are rather large and I think DIY goes up in sales when people want to save money on work/renovation. I'll throw in Boots as one of the companies I think may go under - vastly overpriced. Oh and HS Samuel and stores of that kind. There's a 'dog grooming parlour' near me. Quite frankly I'll eat someone's hat if that survives the recession.

I'd go with GMail, the POP and IMAP services are brilliant. Good amount of storage. Privacy of course is questionable. I wouldn't go with Yahoo (not really sure how much longer they're gonna be around... what with their ex-CEO completely ballsing up the company) .mac is good but of course not free.

We had a tramp/vagrant type bloke that was banned from the local petrol stations up by my mate's uni. He was going up to the pumps and started drinking the petrol. And I thought the attendants looked before they pressed the button to start the pump. We were trying to find him to ask if the flavours varied between station and grade of RON. And if he'd tried diesel or LPG. http://xo.typepad.com/blog/2005/02/man_banned_from.html Even though mine's a UK spec, I'm running 99RON as running a single. I'd be interested to know how many single-spec people are running 97 or V or that insanely costly BP 103/105?

Staying there NYE Have a suite with a river view in the residence part, the girlfirend and 2-3 bottles of champagne lined up Gonna be great. http://www.plazaontheriver.co.uk/ The Cavendish is pretty good but costly http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g186338-d192116-Reviews-The_Cavendish_London-London_England.html Also stayed in Twenty Nevern square, it's a little townhouse but gives something different. Stayed in the Pasha suite, nice bath and lovely bed and a spacious room. The breakfast was a huge cold continental selection, was lovely and the balcony and windows gave a good refreshing view into a small park/square. http://www.twentynevernsquare.co.uk/rooms.htm You won't get that quality a room in a hotel for anywhere near £159 .... the Ottoman suite sounded lovely with a huge rolltop bath in the centre.

yes, they should do a spin test when they receive power, regardless of if any interface is plugged in. I still think you need to get a voltmeter and test the connections from the PSU, then start plugging things in (mobo only), then drives/peripherals etc until you find a load it may/may not be comfortable with. Old AT/ATX PSUs were horrendous with their quality control. I haven't owned a desktop machine for ages so don't know if PSU quality has improved. Unless you pay top £££ I generally found you didn't get uber-quality on PSUs. If no joy accept the fact that the mobo is shafted. If you've really got the time, dismount the mobo, take the PSU out the case, connect both up and run it with the monitor plugged in (not on some carpet, but on a clean non-static surface). That will take out any possibility of bad grounding on the motherboard to the case.

Was in the Hilton Tower Bridge the other week, that's very good. Also recommend Plaza on the River, or any of the Plaza hotels, including the one right by waterloo.

They're really good wheels, I have the exact same set. Sorry to hear about the t****ers messing with your car. There's just no justice in this world sometimes. I hope karma catches up with them. Just to let people know they clear UK brakes fine No spacers, can't remember the offset. I bought mine brand new from envy for £800 + delivery, so £750 new was an even better bargain. Will ask a couple of friends if they're interested this week for you mate. Are you willing to post and if so what would postage costs be?

Remember the issue some fuel supplies had with a dodgy batch of fuel? I believe Tesco was amongst the distributors. It had I think bad levels of benzene, killed off peoples cats/lambdas. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/talking_point/6405973.stm

No beeps makes me suspect PSU issues (We can assume the internal speaker is attached? and so mobo would make a sound if it's at fault). Get a voltmeter and check the feeds from the PSU. Sounds like the PSU isn't pumping out enough watts and when the draw is getting above a certain amount it's just giving up. I assume the fan in the PSU is working fine? (Sorry to contradict here Daman) I remember 2-3 beeps in quick succession from a mobo meant a grounding issue. But if we can assume no HW/SW upgrades/replacements have been made I doubt it's the BIOS or mobo itself unless someone's kicked the PC. Normally parts with moving parts (disks, fans, PSUs) will go first. Then memory. Then mobo (normally due to badly filtered PSU), then any other ancilliary cards most likely due to thermal envelope being exceeded. Does the PC have graphics built into the motherboard like some intel chipset? You could always take off the graphics card and attempt to get it to use that.

Without jail breaking you can send a multiple user text message (was out in firmware 2.1) Picture messages? Why bother when you can email them...? Who doesn't have email nowadays? Bluetooth people are moaning about as there is no EDR (Enhanced data rate - the bluetooth you need for stereo headphones etc) but that's just software, the hardware is inside the phone capable of doing so. JamieP, there's a thread somewhere with everyone's recommendations on apps to have a sniff at If anyone's stuck for ringtones etc I really would recommend forking out the one off fee of buying iToner from http://www.ambrosiasw.com I think the handiest thing ever is the backup facility in iTunes. The amount of friends who have lost/broken their iphone and then got a new one I've had to show how to restore it, but getting a replacement phone and within 30 minutes having it back with every text/email/setting/photo on from when it was last docked is worthwhile.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/motorsport/formula_one/7779168.stm Some of the horrors... : Engines: - From 2009, engine life to be doubled. Each driver to use maximum of eight engines per season; each team can use an additional four for testing - Limited to 18,000 revs per minute. - 2010 engine will continue to be used in 2011 and 2012. Race weekend: - From 2010, standardised radio and telemetry systems, a ban on tyre warmers, mechanical purging of tyres and refuelling on race weekends. Each team will be allowed to use a maximum of 20 engines per season and the power of the engines will be capped. There will be no in-season testing from next season except during a race weekend and during scheduled practice. Wow... talk about a way to stifle innovation. Admittedly innovation normally comes in times of neccessity. No refuelling for the race? How's that economical? Why not just halve the size of the fuel tank so you're dragging around less mass and make the car more economical.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/business/7778830.stm A grim outlook for the big 3 manufacturers in the US then. I'm quite surprised it hit Honda, Toyota and Nissan's stock - down 10%. As a few said a while ago it'll be interesting to see what broad affect this has on the stock market, $ value, Yen value and pensions

iPhone 3G is good, have had both revisions so far. There are a few neat applications out for it and of course it doubles up as an ipod you can plug into the car. We use crackberrys at work, the Bold is good, the new Storm looks the nuts though General experience with Nokias is poor. Had communicators, 9xxx phones, Nxx and 8xxx models and the aerials kept dying. Naff.

I'm hazarding a guess you mean car ones? Otherwise if you've branched out into Stem Cell research or the like, it's down to 40 micolitres (0.000040 litres) http://www.digitimer.com/research/injection/ *now goes off wonder how small an internal combustion engine Chris really can build*

Steve, friend's dad is an independant plumber, I'll try and ask. I know Corgi certification is required for gas people, unsure if there's an equivalent for plumbers. Trying to get my head around there being any 'learn at home' type of things for this career as it's quite practical based? Apprenticeships I would have thought would be the way to go before launching off on your own. Also considered electrician as a career? Tho admittedly it's more risky. IT's not a dead end career, but I suppose that's dependant on where in the field your specialties lie? I work in IT and don't think it's closed off... I agree though it'd be nice to have another trade you could apply if times are sparse.
