Here's a good one for people that know... I have a small block 5.7v8 Chevy engine - that i'm trying to work out if the dipstick is too short or if i'm using too much oil etc..And trying to find out a little bit about it.. So far i've found the following numbers on the block: F 20 0 3970010 I think this means between 1969-80 - however how do i know what's actually been done to the engine without completly stripping it? I'd like to know if it has uprated cam's etc, as it's only supposed to of done 3800 miles. But the main thing is the dipstick - as it's not the original one, i don't know if the reading is correct. I suppose another way to tell would be to drain all the oil, and re-fill with the correct amount, and then check the fluids once again? Anyway, any help greatly appreciated. Thanks Craig.

Well the garage apparently had all the V5 details etc as was holding onto them whilst trying to sell. He's had the car about 5 months. My freind has spoken to the DVLA and requested a new V5 - which he now has in his possesion. His dad's also a lawyer - so he's running with it at the moment. They haven't contacted the police as yet - as they are hopeing to get it resolved without them, and doesn't want to have the police compound them. He is going to contact the police if they don't hear back in a day or so.

A freind of mine gave his Porsche to a garage to sell, however, in a tragic twist, the chap who was selling the car has died, and the porsche is still in the garage lockup. He's had a phone around, and the creditors who have taken over the garage have told him that they now own his car, and he won't be able to get it back. Now my freind has been to the lockup and taken some pictures through the window so he know's his car is still in there, however he is unable to gain entry. - There are about 7 car's in there in total. Whats the best course of action?

Steve that's a mad price.. Why don't you raffle the car... Limited to 200 tickets £50 each. You then get your money - and some lucky punter gets a nice single. Christ - I'll buy 2 ;-) -
Yeah - right hand drive is remarkably easy - it took say about 20 miles before i got use to it, but now it's a doddle. I want to see about getting a different set of seats as well, as being 6"3 they are slightly too big (meaning i sit up higher than normal) and they aren't on runners so bolted straight through the floor. Ultima do a set with minimal padding to get you low in the car - but if anyone has any other suggestions for a set of seats i'm all ears.

ok - that's all the one's i know - someone else's turn...

What English word retains the same pronunciation, even after you take away four of its five letters?
-
There's a much easier way.... Fill up the 3 gallon, and pour into the 5 gallon, re-fill the 3 gallon and fill up the remainder of the 5 gallon - thus leaving you 1 gallon...
-
You have a barrel of oil, and you need to measure out just one gallon. How do you do this if you only have a three-gallon container and a five-gallon container?
-
your good - that one took me ages.

not too sure - i think the 0-60 is about 3.4 but i'm still nursing it and driving it like a wimp. Mainly because i've spent all my money on it, and can't afford to fix it when it brakes. One thing i really like about it, is that it's so easy to work on - i mean i think you can take the entire car apart with a screwdriver and a set of alan keys. The engine's all been polished so that looks all nice at the moment - i'll get some more pics at the weekend once i've washed and waxed it - and tried to trace the oil/clutch/brake leaks ;-) Thanks Craig.

It's a 5.7 V8 Chevy with a G50 Gearbox and holly 4 carbs. (prob some more bit's but i've only just got it so don't know much about it yet!)

Well, this is what i've now gone and bought.... (pics not that good as they are the only one's i've taken as yet before a good wash and polish) http://www.tripkings.co.uk/ultima The first test drive was down to Le Mans and back, totaling 1100 miles... car's only covered 3,800 now :-) Got a few niggly bits but other than that i'm loving it. The missis hate's it... So not doing too much mileage, but i never did in the cerbera either so i don't care.... Craig.

ok, now i'm impressed.. or did you cheat ;-)

Well, i managed to get to and from Le Mans completing just over 1100 miles in the car. Car drove really well, had a few issues... 1, On the way down we noticed that there was oil spraying on the exhausts from the drive shaft seals - carried on driving and checked later and was found to be overfilled (Dropped the level and this fixed the problem. 2, Once we got there and checking averything out, i noticed the dipstick was dry. not a touch of oil on it. Put in 2 1/2 litres of oil and was back on full. (Driving it home it was noted that when i put my foot down it did through out some oil - not much but it did burn it) Was told this could be due to being a fresh engine with only 3k on it. - just going to keep checking the level and see how much she drinks. 2 1/2 litres in 750 miles seems a little exsessive. 3, Both front tyres shredded down the the cord on the inside - i'm guessing the camber's out as it may have been setup for track? either way i've nackered 2 nearly new goodyears. 4, When accelerating up hill, car is a little jerky - fueling issue maybe? Might need a tune up on the holleys. 5, when checking out the holley's we noticed that there was one breather pipe hanging off, and 2 other pipes slightly loose - tightened up and need to replace one of them. So all in all - have a few bits to keep me occupied - but i don't think it's anything too bad. Just got to keep an eye on it all for a min. Oh - and spent about £230 on fuel getting there any back. Ouch!

i must confess, i've never been on a motorbike before, but the feeling in it with the wind battering the helmet and keep leaning down and forward to duck under the windscreen is simply amazing. I absoloutly love it. I'm hopeing it will fit in my newly built garage - its 86" wide so should fit..
-
Thanks Chris, We think it's the gearbox seal at the moment - but that's just me guessing. It has a porsche G50 gearbox - no idea what transaxle it's got. The garage is currently looking at it, and has told me if he can "Temp" fix it, he will - if not it's about a 1/2 a day to a day's work and he hasn't got the time to do it today. The oil preasure is good - looked like the milktray man driving to the garage with a suit and a crash helmet on! I know there's going to be a few niggly bits with it, but once it's done it'll be great (I hope!)
-
i'm 6"3 had to move the seat, but it's really comfortable.
-
well, i went today, and took it for a spin. Absoloutly awsome. The advise for a helmet was good too, as within 10 minutes of driving a bug slapped the visor right where my eye would of been. I've found 3 problems, 1, the alternator belt stinks, think it's loose as occasionaly squeaks and all you can smell is hot rubber. 2, The car is leaking something from the rear :-( it's a very clear red fluid (Think it's transmission fluid) so i think a seals gone on it somewhere - hopefully i can get this fixed tommorrow and it wont cost the world. It managed to cover quite a bit of the rear of the car in it. 3, Worst part - how do i tell the wife i don't think it'll fit in the garage as it's too wide - not tried yet! All in all i think it's great - just hope the oil/transmission leak isn't going to be expensive and i've spent all my money now

As Kopite said, i have a cerbera and have done since September. Not expensive to run at all, unless it's a troublesome one, then it'll get costly. My service cost me £2100 but i had the valve adjustments done. Since then, the only issue i've had is with the door window not dropping on the passenger side. There isns't a great deal of difference between the 4.2 and 4.5 -and both are quick ,although don't feel as quick as a supra the speedo goes round pretty fast. Not refined at all, and you have to be alert when driving them, with no traction control the wheels do spin up (with new tyres) if you drop the clutch at anything over 2k in revs. It handles like a dream, but when it goes you have to catch it and quickly otherwise you'll end up in the field that you were trying to look cool driving round ;-)...Backwards. The speed 6's are terrible (imo) i've heard they ran a test where they benched several different engines at full revs to see how long they lasted. A chev engine lasted 3 days, the speed six lasted less than a minute. All of the above does also depend on how you drive it. If you drive it like you stole it, and give it "beans" all day long then something will break and it'll cost you a fortune. If you drive like miss daisy and check the car over every time you go out in it, you'll be ok. Well that's my essay on cars.. I'm part-x'ing mine for an ultima this weekend ready for Le Mans...whoohoo. Craig,

Put it in a bag and reverse the car over it. Quick and easy, and you won't have to worry about seeing anything.
-
Oh well, Mr Clutch just phoned and said it's def the clutch, however it will take them 3 days to do as the engine has to come out :-( £600.... But can't get it done for Monday night - so it ain't going to Le Mans. So we're having a re-think and may decide to stick an auto box in it in a few months time.
