I had an interesting chat with a relatives new boyfriend recently.
He spends a lot of time in Spain, and has done the bull run. He's also been to a few bull fights. Like me, he has a threshold he has trouble defining....for me, its fine for pigs, sheep and cattle to be killed for food for instance, but I think it obscene for certain other animals to be killed for food in far less humane ways...a difficult stance to defend and qualify.
For him, its fine for the Spanish to kill bulls during a bull fight, but has been shocked to learn about other Spanish Blood Fiestas that occur regularly all over Spain. Theres plenty to read about on the web, not all of it factual and some pure hysteria I'm sure. We have all heard about the goats and donkeys thrown off towers ? Even this is not confirmed as a regular occurrence, just the odd reports etc etc. Said chap has given me links to a couple of sites that want support / help in stopping what has to be said, is the rather unbelievably barbaric torture of animals during these Fiestas, and is now actively involved in stopping these practices (no, I dont know how or at what level). He still enjoys bull fights though.
