Thorin
You can get an excel reader free from the Microsoft site. Otherwise you have to buy it
Branners
Microsoft now do a Student/Home version of office. They used to do a student version which was £90 compared to £400, not sure how much the student/home one costs now but its bound to be a bargain compared to the 'corporate' price they charge normally. You can also buy Excel as a standalone product for about £90. JB
Branners
and here is the info http://office.microsoft.com/en-gb/suites/FX101674081033.aspx it appears to be full versions of the applications but with Outlook missing from the set and OneNote instead (which is a nice little app to be honest).
