evinX
What type or RTV silicone should be used for the corners where the gaskets dont seal to well? Loctite have a black rtv silicone but then suggests they have a grey for Japanese engines but the temp ranges are the same and application recommendations are the same. machman
I used Loctite SI 5990 Copper silicone from Halfords, no leaks yet!
Chris Wilson
Stock cam cover seals don't need any help. None genuine ones may do.
machman
I beg to differ, according to the workshop manual a small amount is required at the pulley end in the corners.
Dnk
Fitted OE on my car a few years ago and didn't use any sealers and had no problems
Mike2JZ
You should use it if you want to go by the book. I haven't many times without any consequence. But I do if I remember! I use copper loctite sealant, had the most success with it over any other sealants. Only drawback is that the sealant is copper colored, so may not be suitable if you have a theme going on. Presumably the black/grey alternatives will be as effective
a98pmalcolm
I used genuine gaskets seems ok... Didn't know silicone should be used
Swampy442
Ive used black Loctite in the past, the Toyota stuff, although expensive is superior
Rob W
Ive used black Loctite in the past, the Toyota stuff, although expensive is superior As above. Used this when fitting mine, just a small amount in the corners at the front.
muckyman
I had my gaskets changed last Saturday by Luke at Driftlimits (formerly Pacific Works) using genuine Toyota parts and he added silicone to the corners. You can debate if its necessary or not, but what harm can it do to take the 'belt and braces' approach?
Chris Wilson
Well, I must have looked at that page in the manual several times but never read it, I admit assuming the illustration was for sealant on the front cam caps to head interface, which I AM aware needs doing and which I religiously attend to. Luckily I have never had an issue with OE cam cover seals without any silicone, but will mend my ways and blob a dab on those corners next time RTFM? Who the ~@&% does that....? I quote RTFM all the time at work, so it's a case of practice what you preach
