C12MMO
Hi All, I recently purchased a full set of UK Spec brakes that were described as been recently refurbed and with like new disks. Below are a few photos of what I actually received today. The disks are covered in surface rust and all the paints peeling as brake fluid has spilt all over them, there is also grass cuttings rusted into the disk. So I have a few questions; 1) What's the best method to re paint the calipers? Obviously it's not the sellers fault the brake fluid has stripped the paint. 2) Are the brake disks fit for purpose? 3) Can I make the disks fit for purpose easily? 4) Should I contact the seller for a partial refund as the disks are not as described? Rich.2211
The discs must of been sat a while surely? My car didn't turn a wheel for four and half months and they had nowhere near as much surface rust as that. Sorry I can't be of much help with the rest but I imagine they would clean up okay. peter richards
if its just surface rust it will brush off and when fitted the pads will clean up the faces , but if not they might need a skim , which will cost you some money so if that's needed you might want to ask for something toward it
bignum
Ive seen less rusty stuff come off the mary rose, i`d hope you got a bargain on that lot?
supra_ufo
I used hammerite on mine mate to do the calipers and they have come out good.
C12MMO
Well the images used to sell them showed new disks in a new box and what looked like brand new brake calipers. The photos must have been taken a few years ago. I paid over £500 and this didn't include rear pads. I have bought new Chris Wilson pads and don't want to be using them to clean the disks up. I have an e36 track car that's been sat for a year with less rust on them.

Nic
I'd recommend using Foliatec calliper paint, it's a 2K paint that you mix a hardener into, it brushes on very easily and gives a very hard smooth gloss finish. A can is enough to do a full set of calipers. http://www.demon-tweeks.co.uk/performance/caliper-paint/foliatec-brake-caliper-paint-and-engine-lacquer
Dnk
Did the calipers get new seals or just a coat of paint ? They look a right mess in the photos, here's a couple of photos of some i refurbished with new seals etc. UK spec discs never came drilled or grooved, the rust isn't a big problem and should be easily removed, wear on the discs can easily be measured with a micrometer or vernier caliper and check against stock O/E thickness. C12MMO
Thanks Dunk, will have a closer look at the seals tomorrow and get some measurements off the disks. Will also get some of that paint thanks Nic. Was expecting to open the box and have some brakes that I could literally fit this weekend Any suggestions of cleaning the disks up? Caesard
The brakes and discs came from me and it is my fault they look rusty as I am breaking the car out in the open and I left them out in the rain as I couldn't get everything done quickly, as I am doing the whole car breaking myself. I knew it was just surface rust and the pictures taken were recent, I can send them to you to check the date stamps, and the picture I posted of the Chris Wilson pads has his invoice on it with dates to show its recent. Sorry about leaving them out in the elements. You can pm me about it mate.
C12MMO
Hi Ceasard, I had purposely not mentioned you as I wanted to get my facts right before contacting you as I dont know how much work/cost would be involved to get them sorted. I understand it would be hard stripping a car in the open by yourself. Was just a bit of a shock when I opened the box up. I'll pm you in the morning. Thanks Karl Edited September 12, 2013 by C12MMO Spelling (see edit history)

Chris Wilson
You'll be needing some rear caliper pad retaining pins, one's missing, the other is too long, possibly a front one in a rear caliper. I do stainless steel pins that don't corrode. You may find getting the pins out a problem. DO NOT mushroom over the ends trying to hammer them out, you can make things go from bad to worse. If they are well and truly stuck I can get them out and fit new pins, and check the pistons are all free. I can probably find some used pads to clean the discs up with, as you say, it would be a shame using new pads to abrade the rust off with.

Think you need to start again regarding painting them and remove all the contaminated orange paint and give them a thorough clean with brake cleaner. You could get the discs media blasted to remove all the rust then spray with rustoff
Nic
Any suggestions of cleaning the disks up? Electrolysis will remove heavy rust deposits and strip back to bare metal, http://www.mkivsupra.net/vbb/showthread.php?268930-Brake-Calipers-Electrolysis-Rust-Removal&highlight=Electrolysis For lighter surface rust Hammerite Rust Remover Dip works well, you dilute the solution with water http://www.hammerite.co.uk/products/rust_remover_dip.jsp
Chris Wilson
If you are worried about the cosmetics get them grit blasted or glass bead blasted using *FINE* media. Don't take them to someone doing real heavy industrial stuff. But left as they are a few dozen stops will have the wiped surface cleaned up pretty well. The rears are pseudo ventilated and are probably Taiwanese. I wouldn't spend money on having them cleaned up.
