94 tt. 5 mpg. ?

my brother has owned a 1994 twin turbo with 500 bhp for 14 yrs. it has covered only 30k miles. it has always performed well untill now. the car is an auto and suddenly it has got really poorly, it will only return 5 mpg with black smoke pouring out, if you run the car in reverse gear it is perfect, no black smoke and you can go as fast as you like ? it has been with leon thornley the local tuning expert who mainly specialises on mercs, he gave up and sent the car to another hot tuning guy in preston. he tried everything he knew, including looking if mice had attacked the ecu wiring on top of the autobox.

the car has now been transported to a specialist in worcestershire at £400 / day. they guarantee they can diagnose and fix anything on a supra.

does anyone out there have any idea what could cause this problem ? i know there is a autobox ecu and an engine ecu, but why have the local highly regarded experts not found the problem? herbiemercman.http://www.mkivsupra.net/vbb/attachment.php?attachmentid=113387&stc=1&d=1278618097

Very likely it's popped a boost pipe, the symptoms are exactly like you describe (huge overfuel and will run very poorly).

Is it a UK or Jpsec model (guessing jspec from the pic)? At 500bhp I assume that is a single turbo conversion too?

hi homer, the car is a twin turbo import, if it is what you suggest a faulty boost pipe, would this be easy to locate? why would the diagnostic two experts not find this?

the picture is my car non turbo, 5 speed manual, as new, 40k miles. bought it new from southern ireland in 1995.

thanks for your help. herbiemercman.

keep that to yourself; you're giving ideas to traders on here......

Thats about the going rate isn't it for a lot of garages, obviously not main dealers.

£400 for an 8 hr day is £50per hr so not really expensive

How does the car run when going forwards ? can you accelerate or does it really struggle ?

If it was a boost problem then surely it would be the same going backwards so doesn't make any sense to me but the black smoke sounds like major overfueling

If the 'tuners' you've been to are as good as the rolling road, I'd seek another opinion!!

Even though some peoples mechanical knowledge is limited I would have thought posting the problems on here and getting many years of Supra owners thoughts like Homer's and others etc is a better starting point than 50 pounds an hour? I wouldnt want to be paying shed loads of cash out for a popped hose or such.

If that was the case nobody would ever take on diagnostic work would they and just stick to changing the oil etc, nice easy money.

Why work for less

Totally agree but i guess the op didn't think of that and to some when you look in the egine bay of a TT its a scary site with everything thats rammed in there.

When i bought my 1st tt many years ago and had a look under the bonnet, i thought god i hope this never goes wrong :D

And no im not stalking you :D

just received a private message from chris wilson he some how knows the first three letters of the reg number so he may have seen the car? our local specialists in preston said they were taking it to somone down south on a trailer. i have tried to contact chris and thank him for his interest but i think my months membership has just run out so i may not have the messaging privaledges. ? must send my £10, this is a good club, good value.

to answer somone else's point, the car runs ok in rverse but black smoke and 5 mpg in forward.

my brother made the mistake IMHO of trying the local peripheral experts first, to be fair they tried all they knew, it cost £520, problem not resolved, just a list of what's not wrong. you can understand people shyeing away from complex super cars.

my brother has had the car from new, it was giving 500 bhp and we were blowing bikes at the IOM TT races with three of us in the car, superb machine, still looks a modern car and 12 yrs old. just sad thet a piece of wire or a failed solid state component can destroy it. herbiemercman.

lol on the stalking dnk :D

herbie think you get 40 posts but to be honest 10 pounds to join is nothing compared to the info you can get here :)

Well i know how touchy you are mate :D

I think the op should spend the £10 seeing as theyve blown £520 getting no where

These cars arent that complex and it really should go to someone that knows mkivs and has spares that could be swapped over to rule out certain parts if req.

The car wont have 500 hp so whoever told your bro that was telling porkies !

A much better description of how the car drives would help us help you, my car blew a boost pipe off a while ago and blew out black smoke but the car struggled to run as it was overfueling but luckily i only had to get it a couple of miles to my garage and refit the boost pipe.

£10 membership could be the best £10 you ever spend on the car. The technical knowledge and experience here is invaluable. There must be hundreds of members who have save a lot of money, with the help of the experts here. Out side of the MKIV community there are very few "experts" that have detailed knowledge of the MKIV, especially a modified one. It is unsuual for faults not to be solved once forum members get involved.

I hope you find a solution soon.

Yeah like a mad axeman on ya roof ;)

Sometimes these so called specialists do more harm than good and then bill you for it... with my time on here I would only let an acredited person with knowledge on here look at my car if ever the time came... Toyota sold hardly any Supra's in the UK so even they would not be specialists IMO

FFS - its a car - 20 yr old design to add to that, not a space shuttle

As a customer you paid for a service and they failed to deliver - why are you expected to pay for their incompetence?

Not having it.....too many muppet mechanics taking the P....

Lol at the axeman.

Toyota actually trained up a few technicians across the country to look after the mkiv when it was released here, my local dealer had one at their place and he did know his stuff.

Not many of them though and funnily enough i went to the big Toyota dealer in B'ham near Fort Dunlop to collect some parts on Friday and a guy in the carpark with a Toyota shirt on said your not having it serviced here are you !!!

My advise would be get the car back from where ever it is and dont pay them a penny, Post some pics and vids up of the car running so people have a better idea, Check for any boost leaks. Then if still no better take it to wilson.

Oh and the most you could get from a twin turbo would be around 380-400bhp running BPU, So who ever told your bro 500 is indeed a little fibber.

My local Toyota dealer who used to service my celica politely recomended AFR when I told him I was buying a Supra, he was honest and said they woudnt have a clue.

Good luck with the fix mate, I wonder who they are sending it to? If it's CW or Dude at AFR you are sorted, they are the best their is.

500hp? Where was that figure plucked from? 400hp bud, if your brother is lucky ;). BPU will take a 600 at silly speed, very small range for the sup to take one on, been through all these discussions before though.

Onto the problem at hand.

Was it an extremely sudden drop in MPG/power? What is the power like? Any boost being created at all? I'm thinking it might be as Darryl (homer) suggested, as there won't be much load in the engine when in reverse. The Auto's have a much longer first as I understand it so it will load up and cause the problems you describe.

O2 sensor might need a chance, I doubt that will help but it wouldn't cause what you describe.

just been PM'd by chris wilson who is a friend of bernie the guy who tried to fix my brother's car in preston, lancs. chris tells me the car was a tough one to solve but has fixed it. i don't know what he found but it would be very interesting to know, hopefully bernie will tell my brother when he retuns the car later this week. i will post when i know, it must be very satisfying to have the knowledge / experience and equipment to solve this kind of problem, bit like the petrol head's harley street.

thankyou to you all for your interest shown so far.
