Just a little taller then your average Garden Gnome :D

I have a special mushroom shaped booster seat so I can see over the steering wheel. It also comes with a fishing rod attachment, but I'm not sure what to do with it.

Luckily I'm 6'1" so appear 'thinner' than I am.

Some good advice here. Lost over 3 1/2 stone since last year and still loosing whilst gaining muscle tone. Homer is right about diet being the only way to get your weight down. Just qualified as a fitness instructor, and helping people loose weight and get fit is going to be a focus of mine. It's great that you are already taking steps to change your health Red, think long term small changes that you can maintain.

20 miles each way WITH the missus!

I already do. You certainly get an adrenaline rush going past the pikey camp.

Already do Kendo. Would go more often if I was fitter.:(

20 miles each way, carrying the missus - PERFECT sign up for the london to brighton? Some have the option to do this, some dont. I live 6 miles from work, but dont live near the train station, so have to drop the missus off. Want to start cycling.

Nice area

How often do you do it? Always wanted to give it a go :D

Hey, hope it works out good for you.

Sometimes in life we get signs to put us in check.

I lost 3stone, in 3months, just from totally cutting out any white carbohydrate, and a high in protien diet.

I kept at 1500cal average for 2months, and it falls off.

What the key is to achive a steady sugar level throughout the day, chances are when people feel really hungry, they actually dont need the food to for supplement, its just we eat more then we need!

its the cause of big sugar hits, and big lows, and keeping it levelled out.

2litres of water controls hunger greatly aswell.

Breakfast is key, keep it brown and wholemeal, and you will start that calorie burning furnace.

BTW, i was nearly 17stone, im just 14 now, and still eat what i want time to time, like said before its a lifestlye change, and im keeping under a 2000cal to stay at my weight.

soz for the long post.

All the best

Last Wednesday I had a heart palpitation whilst at work. Not just a skipped beat but something that felt like my heart was doing an impression of a fish flopping around, struggling for breath. This was accompanied with a near faint.

Took myself off to the docs on Thursday expecting the 'eat better, get more exercise' routine. Instead I got told I have high blood pressure and got sent to have some blood drawn for testing. All this and a card sending me off for an ECG. I thought they'd write to me. The doc said "no. you go now!"

Anyway, got all that done and went back this afternoon for the results.

ECG is okay although I'm being referred to a cardiologist 'just to be certain'

Thyroid is okay. I don't have Diabetes and my kidneys are fine.

However, my cholesterol is high (6.6 although I've not researched what that means) and the doc would like to put me on medication for that...

.....but....

....he wasn't happy with something to do with my liver and has postponed putting me on pills until I've had a scan to look at my liver, gall bladder and the like. He said I drink too much and looked as though he thought I was fibbing when I told him how much (or rather how little) I actually drink.

So, I'm a bit gutted TBH. 37 and overweight with high blood pressure, high cholesterol, heart palpitations and a potentially dodgy liver.

My other half is working on a really healthy, beneficial diet for me and we are now making sure that our two to three times a week walks are now every day.

Pah!

One 'mod' you can't argue with, accept the warning;) DAMHIK.

Roy

1500 cal per day is quite limiting

average male burns about 2000 cal a day... so up to 1700 cal per day. Yes breakfast is key. I have oats, they come in an easy to measure packet, add boiling water and stir... they are also flavoured.

1 packet (a 2nd if very hungry)

1 small tub of blueberries

150g chicken & 1/2 a tub of soup (bought for morrisons) - could do better with this, but its easy

1 small tub blackberries

protein snack

protein with veggies or salad

that my daily food. Lots of water... Read somewhere there that most people cannot tell when they are hungry or thristy, drink more water first. Try sparkling water with lemon for something different.

I am down about 2cms off my waist in 2 - 3 weeks :)

dont eat burgers or doner kebabs either,i can put weight on just looking at those :)

have a look at the calories in some of those meals!

UPDATE:

Since the beginning of April, I've had echocardiograms, ultrasounds, heart recording etc etc. I've also been eating healthily and exercising regularly. Today I went to the docs to get my latest set of results.

His first words were "Hello Martin. You've lost (pause) quite a lot of weight".

Basically, my results are good. No heart disease or damage and my BP is spot on. I've also lost two stone without really trying.

I'm very happy with that. He's also said that I'm fine to do vigorous exercise so it's back to Kendo ASAP. I can't wait.

I'm off to buy some running shoes today and then off to the Gourmet Burger Kitchen to celebrate!

Well done Martin, was that just cutting down?

Smaller portions of more healthy food. I'm also walking/jogging three miles a day.

The Doc said I'm okay to have the occasional treat/lapse. I'll feel guilty if I do though.

You shouldn't. Otherwise you'll get to where you want to be - go back to eating how you were and then begin the cycle again.

Treats are good, in moderation. :)

that said there are plenty of 'healthy' treats out there which do no harm.

for example

Less than 5% fat curries

Cereal bars are chocolate bars in disguise for me

Alcohol free beers

Glad you're making good progress RedM.

I don't think I'm as bad as some people in this thread, but I am a little overweight (14.5 stone at 6ft3 - I was 12st a few years ago) and unfit and don't have as much energy as I'd like.

I would appreciate any advice on eating healthy through the day, currently -

Working day:

Breakfast - Weetabix

Snack - Banana/Apple (Every day)

Lunch - Sandwich (usually ham/chicken salad) w. Crisps and a chocolate bar - once a week I replace the lot with a sausage & mushroom/egg sandwich.

Dinner - Usually meat & potatoes (boiled, occasionally roast) w. 2-3 veg. Occasionally pasta/lasagna or a Pizza.

3-4 cups of tea (half a sugar) and about a litre of water through the day.

I nearly always feel hungry when I'm at work, and my lunch doesn't really make me feel good (plus costs me too much as I keep getting it from the food van!)

Day off:

Breakfast - Crunchy Nut CF (too often it's at midday, as I'm not strict enough with my sleeping pattern), or a cooked breakfast (only about once a fortnight).

Dinner - Some sort of cooked frozen food (Pizza, readymeal, fish fingers 'n' chips - usually because it's about 9pm and I've just realised I'm hungry)

I have a bad habit of having tea with biscuits/cake/bun rather than eating properly. I am considering giving tea up completely, and trying to stop with the biscuits.

I walk about three miles three times a week, I can't run far at all (never been able to) and if I try it usually sets my back off (which is weak due to being unfit). I try to walk my dog daily but he's getting old and senile, often won't even go out of the driveway - result being I go and do something else rather than have a decent walk.

I know it's basically my failing - but I would appreciate advice/recommendations on what to eat through the day that would result in my not feeling hungry most of the time, and give me more energy for something more active than walking (I would like to take up Wing Tsun eventually, but I know I'm nowhere near enough fit enough for it yet).

I am no expert but have always been into fitness since 16.

I'd say cut out the pizza's and lasagne's (or at least have them less often). The cheese can often be very high in fat. Cut out the ready meals as well (high in salts normally and filled with nasty preservatives and E numbers and other strange stuff). Although frozen fish and chips is way better than the chippie its still not that good for you.

Try making brown pasta / brown rice with fresh turkey/chicken/mince meat with ready made sauces. It doesnt actually take a world longer to cook and tastes much much better and is much much healthier.

If budget is a problem I suggest;

Turkey breasts are substancially cheaper than chicken equivalent and higher in protein (proteins make one full very quickly). If you cant afford fresh, you can always buy from frozen section (but it'd need thawing out the day before)

Buy mincemeat fresh - again pork mincemeat is significantly cheaper than beef. If budget is an issue you can get frozen, which can be cooked from frozen as well.

Try adding baked potatoes to your lunches. Can be eaten cold and keep you full for v.long. And try having more wholemeal based cereals for breakfast as they keep you feeling fuller for longer (e.g. shreddies).

Thanks for the response.

What do you actually eat with the baked potatoes? I tend to have quite a lot of butter (well, utterly butterly), and cheese/baked beans with a baked potatoe - I gather too much butter/cheese isn't good for me?

no its not ;) - unfortunately it seems you have a craving for the wrong food types :innocent:

you CAN get cheese which is v.low in fat - make sure you check the label before sticking that cheddar in the basket. As expected though, low fat cheeses don't taste as good but you may not taste the difference.

Tuna mayo is a good filling.

Any sandwich filler filling is good - most supermarkets have loads premixed which save you a lot of hassle and give you lots of choice. e.g. Coronation chicken, seafood cocktail etc.

If your canteen has something which can be used it might be worth sneakily grabbing the sauce only. Thats what I do at my work. A bag of potatoes cost only £1 for about 15 from tesco etc.. You'll soon find you'll be saving loads too.

Keep the opened bag of potatoes in another carrier bag which is closed and knotted, to allow the potatoes to last longer. If you have the potatoes in an open space or open bag they will go off a lot quicker.

My new fav on baked potatoes is a little bit of shrimp/prawn, load of tuna mayo (more tuna than mayo), then some onions on top, mmmm tasty!
