  1. Okay, my mistake, I didn't know the VVTi system used a wasted spark system, the standard engine has a coil for each plug. Seems like a step backwards to me! Okay, so now that's cleared up, how do you use a timing light on a non VVT-i engine, put the inductive pick-up round the 12V feed? Sorry to hijack the thread, I just wanted to know
  2. There's no HT lead for any cylinder, all the coils are plug-top. I suspect the only way to do it is to get some sort of HT lead with a spark plug top on one end and a plug socket on the other, take out coil pack No 1 and use said HT lead to connect the spark plug to the coil pack. Anyone else done this another way?
  3. Can you get timing lamps that work off the 12V feed to the plug-top coil packs then? I often wondered how one would check the timing on the TT?
  4. While fitting my UK brakes this weekend (hurrah) I am going to adjust the handbrake. Just so I don’t have to look around for it I assume the cable adjuster is in the back of the centre console? Also, does anyone know what the specified number of clicks the handbrake should come up by is please? Thanks Richard Edit: I will also be inspecting the handbrake shoes to make sure they aren't completely worn out. Any pitfalls to look out for there?
  5. If you watch the boost when this happens do you ever see it drop back to about 0.4 bar and just stick there when the second turbo should be online? If so then it could be a problem with the pipe-work that provides the air pressure that actuates the ‘intake air control valve’ and the ‘exhaust gas control valve’. I had something similar happening, caused by a hole in one of the rubber pipes. If you need a reference then try this link: Twin Turbo Description Edit: Just to add the problem only really manifested itself under kick down conditions.
  6. The level of tax on petrol. How about council tax rises. Added to this the fact that the government are looking into linking the council tax to income, surely the tax is already *indirectly* related to income. VAT Income tax NI contributions Stamp duty Inheritance tax Capital gains tax Tax on booze Road tax Tax on car insurance … Tax for going for a fucking shit! Yes, I think the amount of tax I pay pisses me off big time!
  7. See what you mean. Some nice bodywork about
  8. Hmm, welll sounds like it didn't move that much. If it's just below the low mark when cold I'd top it up if I were you, have you got any 4-Life Red?
  9. What was the level like in the expansion tank, should have been nice and high while the engine was hot?
  10. Oh dear, I shouldn't have had that extra pint, hideous!
  11. Well, Thursday the 5th of August is just over a week away, anyone up for a meet this month?
  12. I’ll bet they wouldn’t tell him what was in it because it *was* actually Dettol and they were charging £17 a bottle for it!
  13. That kettle approach definitely sounds like the best bet, I would imagine getting to the evaporator is fairly difficult, also the kettle thing will disinfect the whole system, not just the evaporator.
  14. Yes, I think it has to do with some sort of bacteria or something, then again, the evaporator does get very damp during use. You can buy a spray from any good air con supplier but I don’t know about getting in to the evaporator to actually spray it? You don’t need to get the system recharged, the air conditioning gas itself runs round a sealed (well as good as) system and never comes into direct contact with the air that is being cooled.
  15. I just fitted my HKS SSQV so we can compare the amount of oil at the next meet. My stock BOV was buggered, much better now, turbos are not working nearly as hard! *Edited to correct spelling*
  16. I wouldn’t worry about the oil, perfectly normal to have some hanging around the intake pipe work. You might be loosing coolant at a very slow rate, slow enough that you don’t notice any leaks. I had one of those 2-ply rubber pipes perish inside, thought the outer layer looked fine coolant was leaking back through the cotton braiding. The leak was slow enough that I didn’t notice any drips. Get the engine hot, so the coolant is at a nice high pressure and have a very good look/feel round all the coolant pipes, being careful not to burn yourself.
  17. Ant's scooby would have slaughtered it too then I suspect It's not 'quite' standard. Mr Bob Rawle has had a go at it and the list of mods is as long as, well I'll say my arm to keep it clean.
  18. We were just talking about who's car was the fastest before we went our separate ways, had some side by side action on the A14 We agreed there was nothing at all in it.
  19. The signal isn't too good in the pub, it might be worth collecting several more numbers!
  20. Yes, that's exactly the same problem. Only tends to affect the j-spec supra as the uk-spec has a larger waste gate as standard. Check this link out for a diagram of the turbo system.
  21. I'll be there, hopefully Ant and James will be along too.
  22. I called Dorset for a quote when I added my boost controller, they said they wouldn't even insure an import, unless it was an MR2!
  23. HRP will let you buy stuff from their trade counter without a trade account, but you need an account to order online. I got my high and low pressure side adaptors from there, if you just ask for R134a adaptors for automotive use they will sort you out with the correct bits. Cost me about £20 each if I remember! Still the old type they used to sell were more like £40 a pop!!! It’s worth ringing them first to see if they have any in stock as they don’t tend to keep large amounts of these in.
