  1. I had no idea what went into designing and constructing Autobahn, until i watched a documentary on Discovery. the difference between the UK and Germany was like some guy with a shovel compared to NASA. i was surprised when they are governed by the angles they can use on designing the road, and also the +/- degrees of the actual gradient to the road.
  2. i agree that 'situation awareness' on the road is a lot more important than speeding. what i was trying to say, it would be nice if we could have higher speed limits on the road, andno way will it happen when you get idiots going at 170. personally, i think the police should concentrate more on bad driving than speeding, but excessive speeding they should get done for. also, living life with a 'what if' i don't beleive in, i just look at it like common sense. finally, sure i have no problem going 20mph or even higher over what you would normally do, but 100mph is a bit of overkill.
  3. nope, i am saying that reaction times and stopping distances are a safer at 120 than 170. you have more chance to react at 120 than 170. I Quote "120 is the max anyone should do on UK Motorways, if they have to." i did not say they should break the law, i said if they want to, and then i think it is obvious and didn't need to be said, suffer the consequences. to make it easy, if you are driving at 120 down a motorway, and someone pulls out from middle lane, you will have better chance of reacting at 120.
  4. no shouts of "Fanny" here. agree with you 100% 120 is the max anyone should do on UK Motorways, if they have to. we keep wanting the speed limit raised on the different road classifications, yet idiots like this will never get speed limits raised. the other thing, if this guy was not connected to someone on forum (even in a distant way), would we have the same sympathy, or want them locked up for being a fool. personally, i hope he gets everything thrown at them, both a ban and a huge fine. there is no excuse for this, what happened if a tyre blew and he lost control and killed someone. or more to the point, one of us forum members who was on the road at the same time, would we be so sympathetic then. i guess we would want his blood. edited from 'be be' to 'be so'
  5. hi i reckon it is contention ratio or line noise. i get exactly same thing here. in the day, my connection is perfect, but from about 5PM onwards it gets very random. sometimes can keep connected other times it will drop. i normally have to unplug the modem, and let the connection die, then reconnect the modem, but then i get a reduced speed. i know my s/n ratio is not great as the line noise is just outside the limits. when the line was only at 1GB it was fine and no dropouts. also this can be caused by certain modems that run of the USB and on a Motherboard that has a VIA chipset, which a lot of Athlon boards do. i know you have a router, but it is a known prob with modem/USB combo. And, my MSN is deadly as well, it keeps going offline, especially if line quality is poor. ja ne Ian
  6. had a 'fun' morning tidying up around the house and sorting paperwork out. but the afternoon was great, talked to my friends, Angela in Hong Kong, Lisa in Shanghai and Noriko in Nikko
  7. cheers for the info will have a look later on
  8. most of the time my connection in the day is great. but around early evening time, speed drops and you have to d/c the modem and reconnect, then you only get about 3.3MBps. normally i keep 3 or 4 firefox windows open and they currently have the following number of tabs open. 1) 40 tabs 2) 30 tabs 3) 25 tabs i do know in my case it is the VIA chipset that gets overloaded with the modem (Speedtouch), and thats what causes my connection to drop to 0MBps, and why i need to reconnect. I also run bitorrent (Bitcomet) and Newsleecher at the same time, as well as other software.
  9. that match was so funny, supposed to be a day/nighter but we were so crap, the Australian innings finished in daylight.
  10. thought this was a sequel to the Steve Martin classic, The Man with Two Brains, lol
  11. cheers everyone for your help, i was thinking of the APC range, just not sure which one when i posed the question last night. will look into the APC range more now. atm, i have a 400W PSU made by MCE, but never used it as i figured it would not be powerful enough. ja ne Ian
  12. just had a power outtage for about an hour. was wondering if anyone actually uses a UPS at home. i have a 650Watt PSU and 5 HD in an an Athlon 64 setup. any ideas on a good one to buy - dont want to spend too much atm. getting fed up with system shutting down, and no time to save the work i am doing. thanks in advance, ja ne Ian
  13. this guy in Malaysia who is an athiest had died. So they laid him out ready for the service that was going to take place. the commentator said of this guy "all dressed up with nowhere to go".
  14. 78MPH is pretty much equivalent to 125KPH so maybe it is tied to some European limit. they could raise it to 100MPH and then concentrate on prosecuting idiot drivers on the roads instead. 5% speed related accidents kill, 38% are due to inattentive/incompetent drivers. and they are there own figures. personally i don't see why anyone would want to go over 120MPH on one of our motorways, no probs in Europe where they are better quality.
  15. to add: for the written language there are 3 alphabets, Hiragana, katakana (mostly used for foreign names or words) and kanji. kanji is the hardest to learn and in everyday use you would need to know about 2000 Kanji to read a newspaper or non technical documents. total kanji can top out at around the 50,000 mark. the main dialects are Kanto for Tokyo area, and Kansai which is the area including Osaka and Kyoto. also in Japanese unlike English, it gets a bit confusing as words like Ki 木 can mean tree or trees, where as here we know the difference in quantity, Japanese has no grammatical number or gender.
  16. Konnichiwa minna-san If you cannot find language classes, then personally i would recommend Pimsleur or Rosetta Stone as first calls if you are serious about learning Japanese. there are also many Japanese language shows you can download. some are pure language shows while others are travel shows with English subs. Language shows: Nihon de Kurasou Japanese Language and their People (BBC series with Yuka Nukina) Travel Docs with English Subs: Next Stop discovery soko ga shiratai if you check out the torrent sites you can find them there, or buy them. if you are going to torrent i use Demonoid and just type 'Japan' or 'Nihon' into the search engine. same thing for Chinese (Cantonese and Mandarin), and Korean. best one i had was for Taiwan where they showed you how to say 'is it alright to breast feed on the train' hope that helps a little, ja ne Ian
  17. here is a cryptic one for position 1, we wouldn't be here without it, and it begins with 'T' and has 6 letters, headquarters in Aichi, Japan: 1) トヨタ自動車株式会社 (begins with a 'T') 2) 3) 4) 5) Homer Simpson 6) Darth Vader 7)The late Greg Gillman (my physics teacher from 1975) 8) Steve McQueen 9) David Hassellhoff 10) Sloth 11)The A Team 12) Mawby 13) George Best 14) The Beatles 15)Kermit The Frog 16)Tommy Cooper 17)The late James Brown 18) Columbo 19) My mum 20) Your sister 21) Fanny Cradock 22) Tracy Dick 23) 24) Death 25) Jade Goody time for a Taiga night
  18. hi demonoid is great, prefer it as first choice over piratebay, mininova etc. with demonoid you get a better layout to each torrent page with descriptions and cover illustrations as well.
  19. sure thing, just PM'ed you an invite, hope it works ok for you ja ne Ian
  20. i agree and i was not in a rush, as the car was having SatNav and DVD done i could wait the 7 days, but was promised for Monday this week, but no tyres for front till today. the reason i needed them quick, i had my Carlton away being worked on and that night it was due to come back, the ECU failed at 5PM when they were going to put it on a trailer. my Supra had the flat earlier that day, and i needed sat nav done, and the Supra was going to be taken away when the Carlton arrived. i was fully expecting the Carlton to be ok and come back when the Supra was taken away.
