View Full Version : Car geometry 'Tech Talk' - near Tamworth - Sunday 5th April

SteveR
06-02-09, 13:13
Following on from the interest thread (http://www.mkivsupra.net/vbb/showthread.php?t=175989) there seem to be quite a few people interested so I've gone ahead and booked a date for this talk/demo, which will be held at Center Gravity's workshop near Tamworth:

Chassis and suspension tuning
The art of tuning the car to optimise grip in race car preparation
Camber, castor and toe
Practical demonstration using props and tyres to highlight: Camber – used for corner grip
Castor – changing steering feel and self centring
Toe – how toe affects the stability of rear wheel drive cars
Factors affecting steering pulling
Tyre Science
Tyre make, age, size design effects on handling
4-wheel alignment
Process of 4 wheel alignment
How braking and application of power changes the rear and front geometry
Corner weight balancing
The distribution of weight across the four wheels to ensure equal left-right turn performance
Demonstration of corner weight balancing with some pub-table physics - sorry no alcohol allowed ;)
Questions
Particular concerns or problems

Arrive 10:30am for 11:00am start.

The talk will last around 4 hours and will be FREE, although please don't leave Chris & Jayne out of pocket for the tea/coffee/biscuits they provide during the event. :)

Members from any of the events regions are welcome.

Numbers are limited to 20. To avoid another member missing out on the opportunity, please only sign up if you WILL be coming (or if you sign up but your plans change, let me know ASAP).

I am also looking for 2 volunteers to bring their Supras:
Supra 1 will have the corner weights measured as part of the talk. The knowledge gained from this procedure would most benefit a track enthusiast.
Supra 2 will have it's basic geometry measured. The knowledge gained from this would best benefit someone who has aftermarket suspension but who hasn't had a geometry setup carried out.

NB: Measurements can be carried out on any car, but adjusting the corner weighting requires height-adjustable suspension.

[-]So if either of the above applies to you, step forward. - I'll pick the 2 cars/owners when the list is full.[/-] :)
edit - no more volunteers please!

Fair play, I'd say your white car is a worthy contender for that position - no promises though, I did say I'd decide when all 20 places are taken. If either the decision becomes tricky I'll be speaking to Chris for his input.

One thing I was wondering, for the geometry measurement car, it might be worth sticking an older Supra with completely stock, original suspension forward, to see how age affects things... it's just a thought though.

Course it is mate, Chris even said if we can't find suitible examples of lowered/track/etc cars to look at on the ramps, yours would be a good one to show people as everything is brand new and 100% spot on. (Irrelevent now as we've alread got volunteer cars for each topic!)

Anyway, do you want sticking on the list? :)

So are you guys in or do you want to leave it until a later date to decide? You dont have to come in a Supra BTW, just the 2 cars that are chosen to be examined/measured.

I'd really like to attend this, but cannot commit just yet, too many other issues to fix on the car, but no time to do it :(

Will be in touch in a month or so, if it can wait that long.

Sean1933
22-02-09, 09:13
Sorry i forgot to reply, had other things to sort out.

Im in the same sort of position as Homer so will also be in touch. I assume this is a supra members thing as i have a friend who would love to come to this also if possible.

SteveR
22-02-09, 16:42
There isn't an immediate requirement/rush to sign up chaps, other than it's first come:first served, of course. Once all 20 places go, that's it. The limit is so everyone can get a good view and there is time for everyone to ask questions without rushing.

If there are any places left, say 2 weeks before, feel free to bring friends. That's ample opportunity for club members to get their act together. :)

Having already done all this and spoke to Chris one to one about my car and what does what i'll happily give up my place if you fill the 20 places.

AlexM volunteered to be Supra 1 (although you're on non-height adjustables Alex so wouldn't be able to act on the information you gain - are you sure you meant this option??)
bignum and Pete have both volunteered to be Supra 2, leaving me with a decision to be made...

Anyone got any wise method of deciding who gets the places or shall I flip a coin? I hate dissapointing people. :(

SteveR
18-03-09, 12:52
PS If anyone on the list (http://www.mkivsupra.net/vbb/showpost.php?p=2267997&postcount=2) can no longer make it, please let me know so the place is freed up for someone else.

I don't have aftermarket suspension, so I definitely didn't mean option two! I can act on any information I gain in due course.. :)

Fight to the death? Bull dodging? Origami face-off? 100m sprint? GRiD racing championship? Possibilities are endless. :d

18-03-09, 13:52
OK I've just spoken to C.G. and we're sorted.

Alex - you car will be corner weighted.
Bignum - your car will do the basic geo measurement.
Pete - your car will be used to show what can be done to assess a geo setup by looking at:
tyre wear
sight lines
pieces of equipment people might have at home

Hopefully that will keep everyone happy and fulfil what info you're each after whilst also educating the rest of us as we witness it all. :)

Alex - there is quite a bit of benefit from corner weighting your car (and also finding out it's total weight) so it's an ideal candidate actually, my mistake for thinking otherwise.

All - Jayne is trying to sort out bacon butties for us (at a small cost) and after Mike's suggested it I might look into arranging a post-event pub meal; if noting else to make sure poor Chris & Jayne can go home and we don't stay there asking them quetions all night. ;)

ok, but don't expect an early finish - I'd estimate we won't be done before 3, probably 4, possibly 5 depending on how much you guys ask. ;) Nothing stopping you leaving early if you need to, don't park where you might get blocked in.

Yeah for those that fancy it we'll find a pub nearby, Chris will recommend a plce I'm sure. nom nom. :D

This will also make sure we're not there asking questions until 1am, like one previous group!
