Chris Wilson
Too much time on your hands Pete, too much time.... Spent a pleasant hour with Terry in the woods, this evening. I just KNEW cutting out every other bar in the new cattle feeder should have been numero uno job for this weekend, but I was cold and wet, and the cows seemed to be managing fine. I put it off, and off, then decided it wasn't going to suddenly go warm and sunny, so off I went with the hacksaw and a file to do the business. Found the big black highland cow well stuck with her head and horns through the bars. Luckily she's very calm and people friendly, so with some coaxing I got her to keep still while I got in the feeder and held her head (yeah...right, OK she just kept still whilst I whispered soothing nothings and stroked her head), and Terry worked the hacksaw 6 inches from her ear. We got a bar out and she was free, with no damage to us, or her ladyship. She was remarkably calm considering she'd obviously been stuck for a good while. Finished the other bars, filed the sharp edges, and went in with zero feeling in my hands, totally sodden, but no extra ventilation in my body. Moral : Do not put off until tomorrow what can, and should, be done today! Jane also found a rather weak white pheasant in the back woods yesterday, obviously one of this years chicks from somewhere. I managed to net it, and give it a feed, and it's now joined our one eyed ring necked pheasant in the aviary with the peafowl. Lovely looking bird, and quite rare, if you tried to buy one it'd cost a bit. So that's the second wild pheasant I've saved in 7 years here She looked well and happy enough this morning, anyway. They don't last long in the wild as they get picked on by predators as they are so easily seen.
