Branners
I should probably have talked to Virgin/NTL before about how much I was paying but my monthly bill was £71.50 without phone calls. That was for XL tv package, 4mb broadband, phone and 2 cable boxes. Told them today that I miss Skyone too much and I going to leave, but before I go what can they do for me. So they ran through their special pricing and Im now going to be paying £42 per month for the same service but Im also getting a V+ box (record 2 programmes at the same time while watching a 3rd) included in the price. Seems like a reasonable deal. Just thought I would let all those other Virgin Media people out there know that they are doing deals at the moment so if you are paying a lot then give them a call and see what you can barter them down to. Branners
I could probably have pushed them to throw in 20mb broadband as well, but I have seen some horror stories about that service so left it well alone. Call them on 0845 454 1111 and choose option 3 which is the one about moving house or thinking about leaving Virgin Media. Then choose the 'thinking about leaving' option and start bartering with the person on the phone. Tell them you are thinking of leaving and what can they do about your package and see what they say. Dont take their first offer and push them really hard by umming and arring at their offer. Be aware that if you take a V+ box you will be on a 12 month contract. Pete
Cheers John. To be honest I'm getting right peed off with having to reset the box etc recently so I do have a legitimate complaint 2Mb broadband is fast enough for me. Not worried about a contract as I won't be moving to BT as there's no phone line - and I don't want to pay the installation fee for one.
Branners
box resets are a pain in the bum. I have my DVD player and my cable box on the same multiway plug and just turn them off at the wall and back on if they crash or if the box loses its programme info. They tell me the V+ box stores 8 days of programme information so hopefully it doesnt suffer the same way. JB
DaveK
The unreliability of the box was one of the main reasons I left NTL (as Virgin were) and went to Sky.
bondinho
I got the same deal as you Branners back in March time, but with Sky Sports all for £55 a month. The only thing is that the service levels have dropped since Virgin took over from Telewest/NTL. I'm on my 3rd V+ box and I had to buy my own HDMI cable as the Virgin one kept making the picture disappear every couple of minutes and the engineers were blaming my TV and wouldn't replace the cable! Don't have any problems with the Broadband service or phone though, just the V+ box and the people you talk to on the phone are muppets 90% of the time. ivan
Complaining does indeed work. I was on 2 separate deals for phone and broadband because I took them out at different times. I was paying £25 for 4Mb BB and £11 for phone per month. Although they couldn't put me on a 2 item bundle, they gave me a £9 a month discount. Shame I didn't ring months ago. markymark
Changing to sky tomorrow - had similiar problems with virgin but just be careful - I was going to leave them a few months back, immediately they offered me an all singing, all dancing deal almost half the price I was paying, then last month they banged the price back up & say that the deal they gave me was a 'seasonal promotion' that had ended. I was so p**sed off with them & the box resets, & random internet problems that I turned down all the new prices they were offering me. Hope you don't get any problems like mine mate - Richard Branson has made ntl worse if you ask me
Bobbeh
Sounds a little high there John? We're on XL Cable, TV bundle + phone + 2 boxes.. but I dont think we're paying that much. Dont fear the 20 mb, it makes no difference to your reliability of service. I've had no issues with it tbh other than it not running at 20 mbits 90% of the time.. but like the others have said its not all that important to me these days. The V+ box sounds good, we've got a topuptv thingy too and that has a built in recorder.. it works really well.

JB, were you with NTL prior to Virgin? thats very strange. I have heard of them doing that before. You went through the number above and followed the options and they couldnt help you? I would try again and say that you have had a great offer on Sky+ or something. I have been with them since they were Jones Cable, then Cable and Wireless, then NTL and then Virgin Media. Probably about 12 years now. JB

Gaz6002
My HD box is BRILLIANT - I don't know if you are refering to the normal sky+ box or the same as mine but I love mine! Mine is simply awful. It loses series linked shows that i've saved, deletes things that I want to keep and freezes way to often to ignore. I have to reset it every 2 weeks or so due to the failures. Mine isn't the only one i've heard of like this either, it seems after a while they just decide to stop doing what you ask them to. The Sky+ box is the main reason i'm on the lookout for a DVD recorder, as soon as i've recovered from my single turbo conversion.

Pete
Finally got around to calling them today. Because I've been a loyal customer for 12 years plus they changed my package from Telephone (free weekend calls), 4Mb Broadband and TV XL package which I was paying £56.50 + average of £10+ on phone calls. To: Telephone (Evening and weekend free) 4Mb BB - which is being upgraded to 10Mb anyway at no extra charge this month TV XL as before All for £35 a month (12 month contract) RESULT! Best thing is Vickis company are issuing her a free notebook and paying £25 broadband expenses next month too - so I've got a saving of about £678 per year! Pete
That's an extra 3000 miles worth of petrol in the Supra! Don't put it like that. Petrol prices will just depress me again when I work out that I'm most likely to pay more for petrol this year which negate the savings I've just made. Also just switched from British Gas to EON allegedly saving a further £180 per year.

Alex
Virgin Media are deffo a good deal atm. I've signed up for BroadBand L (4mb which is going up to 10mb) and the phone (they take over the BT line). It's £22.50 for the month with free evening and weekend calls. I was paying £20.99 for 1mb (out of a possible 8 lol) and a 20gb limit PlusNet/Force9 Broadband + £11 BT line rental. So I should save ~£10 a month and increase my bandwidth 10fold soon.
