Dentist. What do I do?

OK, so I was registered with an NHS dentist where I used to live in Eastbourne.

However I moved to Hampshire and there were no local dentists taking on NHS patients, as I never have any problems with my teeth I didn't really push the issue.

Now, of course, somethings gone wrong and 1 or 2 (I can't tell) of them are seriously hurting.

The local dentist just put up a big banner saying they are now taking on NHS dentists so I called them up and spoke to the most snotty stuck up Cow I've ever spoken to in my life who told me that if I wanted to register I needed to go in, collect a form then go on an 8 week waiting list. I explained that I needed to see someone sooner then that and she told me to take a jump basically. I pushed her and asked her what I was meant to do so she gave me a number to call (which was out of date and didn't exist anymore, nice) so I got the new one and rang it and basically it was a helpline that arranged emergency appointment for that day, but that's no good because I need to book the time off work in advance and the appointment could be anywhere in Hampshire basically (Hampshire being BIG)

So next I think about going private, which could be a better option in the long run so I call up all the local private places and they are all shut until after the bank hol! I got through to one who told me that to be seen on the actual bank holiday as an emergency was like 8 million pounds just for the check up and then some insane hourly rate for "whatever" repair.

So what the Hell do I do now? Am I missing something? How do I fix this stupid tooth?

Sorry, Rosie, but NHS dental places really are like gold dust these days. If you can't wait the 8 weeks then you will have to go private :(

Only other option is to try all NHS dentists within, like, a 100 mile radius to see if there's any places available with an immediate appointment possible too.

Not sure what would happen if you pitched up at A&E and told them that you kept passing out from the pain or something like that - surely they must have to deal with SOME emergency dental issues?

maybe a quick fix till next week , go to the chemist , and see if they have something you can put on it to stop it hurting , i think its called novacain , but not sure

Mmmmm - novocain.

That's what they actually use as an anaesthetic (sp?) in dentistry, isn't it? Somehow don't think you'll be able to get it over-the-counter at Boots!

Hi Rosie. I forgot you came from Eastbourne. We're missing you. Anyway, if its that bad go to the hospital, cos they have a dental dept for emergencies like this.

I've now registered in Eastbourne now, but my previous dentist was in Brighton. Long way to go for a check up!

Good luck. I hate dentists! :)

I take it it was the NHS Access Centre they gave you the number for? I just spoke to the better half who said they're the ones to talk to, but if you are in pain surely you can get the time off for a medical visit? You could possibly get a quick appointment for a quick look and something for the pain, I doubt they'd do major treatment until you had a full appointment anyway.

If not, apparently NHS Dentist's aren't allowed to refuse treatment for someone coming in off the street - you could stop by one local and ask for a quick appointment, though they do get around it by claiming they're too busy (which to be fair, many are).

I'm not sure it hurts enough for A&E? I've seen people with an absess and it's not that bad for sure.

Maybe I'll just have to suck it down, try and get some of that over the counter stuff and go next week.

The whole thing just winds me up!

In fact I just realised that the closed until after bank hol dental places have a voicemail saying to call the same number the snotty cow gave me that couldn't help anyway grrr

If its bothering you that much, a trip to A&E may be a good idea. If anything, they can probably prescribe you something for the pain. Even small infections (like mine last week) can be really painful.

Probably worth getting checked out anyway :)

Your only option really is to ring emergency dentists again and blag it saying it's so painful it's preventing you sleeping at night and your having trouble eating... otherwise they don't want to know and you'll have to wait the 8 weeks to get in to the NHS dentists. You could always keep ringing up and try and get a cancellation spot sooner.

Go private - if the pain is that bad then you won't notice the hurt to your wallet and they always seem happy to fit in a paying patient (I can't think why)

I got my wisdom teeth problems assessed and taken out within the space of one week, I'm so glad I didn't have to wait around for weeks/months.

I goto Optical Express Dental clinic..I find them very reasonably priced and they do a scheme so you sign up and get a good percentage off ....I normally see a hygenist every two months.. so i get (i think) three oppointments a year free. plus money off any other dental work..they do cosmetic dental work too i had my teeth straightened and re-enamelled etc .worth giving them a call and seeing how much...if all else fails...i gave up looking for an NHS dentist long ago plus you end up with some butcher and as you say a receptionist who looks down the end of her nose at everyone and is rude....

They cost money but boy do you notice the difference when you go private.

Spending money on your health or ya self is money well spent Rosie, and its not hideously expensive.

Well just until you find a good NHS dentist.
