Homer
£12 of paint from Halfords (and 6 hrs of my time getting the old crappy rubber stuff off!)
jamesmark
1 hour to take the rubber stuff off (after 1hr 30m for just the sodding ashtray) and got the dash done for free with the respray on the car.
edge
rubber stuff came off ok even though i no longer have any feeling in my fingers Primed up with a few coats of the halfords plastic primer, smotthed, black top, smoothed, then clear on top of that. Started to crack and fish eye. Im a perfectionist and want them in gleaming black with lacquer to last but im no good as i found out. R3DG3CKO ROB
I've cocked mine up big time - I was way too harsh with the sandpaper and not enough primer... I need to lightly sand it all down and start again using bondo to get rid of the scratches then use plenty of primer... I want a high gloss / glass style finnish too
Guru
You need at least 4 coats of primer Rob. Make sure its about the same for laquer for a better finish....
R3DG3CKO ROB
Thanks for the advice, I'm gonna take a trip to Halfrauds after work today and get some plastic primer.... I think that the foliatech (or whatever it's called) paint was a mistake too... It seems to be designed to preserve the texture of the surface, which in my case meant the scratches... What's the best process for cleaning the surface? Wet and dry, wash down and then clean with white spirit?
silvershark44
I know some people charge £200 quid for this job. But any small body shop will gladly do it for next to nothing if you ask me. I think £50 would get you a good job done in most places.
Guest Phillw454
I need mine done as i cocked them up. Lesson learned and money wasted. I cocked mine up on the weekend too, going to try again today:d
Darragh
its so simple a job lol my only problem was after i finished painting it you could see all the wee damage marks that were there from the previous owner a little wet and dry sand paper (just to take the shine off) a full tin of halfrauds plastic primer a quick wet and dry (not to hard) then add your paint on evenly and smoothly (dont be holding the trigger on, small blasts but keep your hand moving) let it dry then a full tin of lagour (excuse the spelling) job done http://img76.imageshack.us/img76/7615/image009ly4.jpg http://img181.imageshack.us/img181/6501/image017ff9.jpg http://img181.imageshack.us/img181/1389/image021wp8.jpg
SupraJames
I charge £50 for this service, £25 of that is paint though, plastic primer, paint and then laquer. Preperation is the key to a good finish, smoother the primer the better the finish will look.
edge
Thanks guys. My friend who works at landrover is getting there top spray man to do them for me just £40 in black. I just have to take the rubber off the remaining panels.
Ryan.G
dont do it black it will look rubish;) Before you ever spray anything i wood recommend you degreese the item with engine degreeser or similar. Gets rid of any silicon which causes fish eyes and reactions alot of the time
R3DG3CKO ROB
What is fish eyes??? is that when the paint refuses to stick to the surface???
Greenauto
I'm thinking about doin my dash panels too. gonna use the advise given here and try doin it myself too. The panel I'm gonna start with is a broken spare one anyways so I'll give it a go on that. Most of my dash panels are still in tact and unscratched. Is it gonna look really silly if I just do the auto box panel in a gloss black? or should I do the whole set? If it all goes pear shaped I can always get the local sprayers to do it. Pabs
I've never been any good at spraying. I can do an OK job, but I want a pukka interior, so I expect I'll get someone to do mine for me. (Lazy I know lol)
