What £175k will get you around the globe

Apparently the average uk house price is around this figure (I've seen 175-200k), so I thought i'd see what you could get in other countries for the same amount all within 20 miles of a major city to keep it fair

started with this within 20 miles of London (2 bed flat, top floor)

10 miles outside vancouver canada (3 bed detached)

image

3 Miles outside bangkok thailand (3 bed with pool)

image

20 Miles out of Auckland new zealand (4 bed and just huge!)

image

20 miles outside of sydney (3 bed detached)

image

20 miles outside of san diego (3 bed det)

Just makes you think huh?

Many years ago I spent 3 months working in Florida and I could have changed to a local contract there. The lifestyle was lovely - very relaxing - and excellent weather (apart from a few windy days obviously).

But - and I realise this is "racist" - I simply could not have worked with the Americans (at least not the ones I was working with). When I first got there I was well impressed - you'd hear them talking about problems and it all sounded good. But a month later, they were still having the same conversations - and I also discovered that "fully unit tested" in American translates to "Oh, I didn't test that".

But looking at those pics, I think I could live with those problems. I could sell my house and live in NZ, Aus or San Diego in one of those houses and have no mortgage. Why do we stay in this country? And even more strange - why do other people move TO this country?????

I tend to go through this when I travel - checking out the local prices. I've not found much that compares to here in the south.

I was especially impressed with a two bedroom place by the beach near Krabi in Thailand which I could've put on my credit card (assuming I had a company there, or citizenship, allowing me to buy).

What disturbs me is that as I work for a foreign company, items such as UK house prices (slash cost-of-living) are not considered when 'adjusting' salary.

Yes but the problem with moving to a different country is that as soon as you buy, live there for a while and sell up. The price it goes for you wont be able to buy anything near the size back in the UK. So unless you're in a very good financial situation you're not going to be able to move back.

Which is the biggest downfall.

I know, crazy huh? the bonus is that we have started here, and obviously due to our strong currency can buy some amazing places in other countries, the sydney and nz house pics just blow me away, they were both just under 175k too!

A bit like moving from West Sussex to West Yorkshire. Trouble is, by the time we were ready to buy we couldn't afford anything even halfway to what we wanted.

So stuck renting and stuck oop north.:(

I bet your quality of life is far better than us stuck in London though :(

There are 'IPads' coming on the market now - smaller high efficiency flats that are cheaper for first time buyers to get on the ladder.

Problem is if they stay cheap so that first time buyers can always afford them, then the people that buy them will have an increasingly bigger gap between them and 'the next house up'.

Until people do what comes naturally with age, and the market is flooded with unaffordable large® houses, bringing that end of the market down ...

House in Blouberg, for around the £200K mark...

But the cost of living vs the money that you earn, just makes most things unaffordable. Interest rate is about double what it is here.

Your personal safety is always at risk... You cannot walk around by yourself, etc, etc.

EDIT Hell I am one of the people that moved here, from there...

Yes prices here are ridiculous, but once you see the rest of the world, it all changes...

NZ - Auckland city centre is a total of about 15 miles... After that its purely farming districts.

Sydney and Vancover, however I would love to move to...

Sydney has gorgous weather, gorgous women, what else do you need!!

When I was planning to move to the US with work I really struggled to find anywhere cheap to live in the local area, as with the UK I guess prices can vary quite a lot depending on location so it's always easy enough to find a nice house in a scary place :)

A quick look on http://www.santacruzhomefinder.com/ suggests things haven't changed much either.

Nice little 3 bed detached here though:

The construction company my good lady used to work for did something similar, a single room with IKEA bits and pieces in it, basically like one of those self-contained show areas you see in IKEA... sadly they were still asking close to 100k for them though.
