Supragal
I've been offered a job. The job itself sounds pretty cool, a really good opportunity and so on. BUT they have made me a salary offer that is 10k less than I am on now. I think I might be able to get them to move a bit on that but only a couple of grand. It also means relocating to Shropshire and there is no relocation package. They say the pay will go up once I've passed exams, but I need to study those in my own time. Would also mean that Jon needs to find a job up there too, which might be a nightmare. What would you guys do?! I'm so confused.

From what you've said it doesn't sound that good of a deal. I believe cold hard cash is far better than promises of future potential. The other thing is how much will it cost to relocate.? Sounds like you've got a good job already! H.
Whitesupraboy2
Ive got to be honest; * a relocation with no fee's * 10k drop * Partner having to find new job It might be a great chance but it would be a no if it were me. It depends on the risk your willing to take together. Would you be able to pay the morgage and new setting up costs (phone etc.. it all adds up) on just your wage for a month or two? Supragal
It's so difficult. I mean I think the problem is that I am really well paid for what I do because it's very specific to the company I was with, however those skills don't carry across to any of the other jobs I've been looking at, so chances are I will never match my salary immediately. Havard- I should point out that I lost my other job a while back so currently I have no job and no income hense there is a bit of a 'I do desperately need a job' element to it. Simon K
I think only you can decide if this job offer is worth it. If me, then if I had no job, and I was offered a position that was fun, but for 10K less than my previous job, and I had been searching for ages, money was running out, then yes, I would take it. However, would I relocate ? no ! Cost you a few £££ to move. My partner would have to find a now job, or could be a great excuse to break up with the partner ?? :-) But, it also depends on your skills, tpye of job you are looking for and the chances of another job being offered to you, in your area. If I had savings, I would work out how long I can search for, being choosey, until I really had to take what was offered. Also, if you take this job, will it be as interesting as you think ?? Ive have jobs / contracts before where what I thought I would be doing, was so not the case. Situations like these are tremendous for new starts, jobs. Have you considered contracting ? or starting your own business ? So, if me, no I wouldnt move, or take this job. I would wait to see what else I can get, or consider other piositions / roles. Pete
It's nice up here in Shropshire Cheaper to live too, you'll save it on your mortgage and then some.
Havard
Ah, your first post doesn't make that clear. In which case you are being offered a lot more than what you are on now!! Still seem like a lot of hassle! What do you do?? H.
Mike
It's nice up here in Shropshire Cheaper to live too, you'll save it on your mortgage and then some. That's very true... and apparently there is a chap around those parts who is very good with Supras... Can you find somewhere cheap to rent and try it out for a couple of months... try before you buy, sort of... and keep looking for something closer to home whilst your working? Street Dreamz
Tough decision, but if you put it down to the circumstances having a job would put you back out there. I wish you all the best in whatever you decide Supragal

Supragal
It's nice up here in Shropshire Cheaper to live too, you'll save it on your mortgage and then some. Well, I'm still in a tie in period with my mortgage so I'd have to get a house of the same value, so yes it would be a much nicer bigger house than what I have here but it won't change my repayments I think I would do as Sonicsoop says, rent this place out and rent up there for a while. Argh. I dunno. So many people are saying it's such a good company/career etc. Why is it never simple?
Havard
Most people already knew then I realised after that some wouldn't!! I keep asking what your occupation is? I'm sorry I'm quite new to all this. If your going to relocate to Shropshire you might aswell go the whole hog and come to Wigan! It's great here - no running water or electricity and all the people still point at aeroplanes!! Hope you get sorted. H.

Pete
Well, I'm still in a tie in period with my mortgage so I'd have to get a house of the same value There's a few mortgage lenders that will pay your penalty just to get you as a customer, (or so I'm told). Supragal
Yes that is true. Plus it's even further from my family, could be a good thing haha. We have plenty of grass but not as much as I saw yesterday, well, certainly not with property at those prices!!

Ark
Sounds like a bad idea to me. If things are getting tight, swallow your pride and stack some shelves, or pull some pints to tide you over. It can actually be quite a laugh.
Supragal
I've been applying for xmas work etc and just not getting anything!! "Too over qualified" ?? Come on, does it matter if I'm willing to work? Just spoke to them again and they would be happy to put me up in a hotel near them to tide me over while looking for places to move to etc, and the job offer if accepted would stand for however long I wanted within reason. So I think I can negotiate to being within a couple of grand of what I want money wise. So now It's all sounding better. I dunno.
colsoop
It may be a 10 k drop but this end of the country is slightly less expensive property wise so your money will probably go that bit further. It is a tough decision to make though.

What does your other half think of relocating? - what does he do? Contrary to what I said in previous posts, they do seem quite accommodating if they'll put you up for a bit.? Still, as I said before - Come To Wigan Its Great!!! Open a pie shop - the worlds your lobster etc....! H.
Supragal
He is really keen to move somewhere cheaper, it's only the jobs and salaries that has kept us here anyway. Both our families are in different places. He does IT stuff to, tier 3, patch management, software configuration and licence management, coding, bits n bobs. Now, Cap Gemini are just down the road from there and they have a HUGE recruitment section. I'm thinking he could crash with someone here while he jon hunts.
