Bobbeh
Damn gearbox seal has finally started causing me grief. I was warned about this 18 months ago before my 2nd trip to Germany as there was a little bit of seepage, and after my last service a month or two ago they said it was getting worse.. but I hadnt noticed anything on the floor and I wasnt going to panic until it made a mess. But now there have been a few drips on the driveway from the middle of the car.. I guess its about time I get it fixed Apprently a bastard of a job to do. Anyone had this done before? I think 'Paul's had this before right?
supRo
Hi Rob, It's not really a pig to do - gearbox has to come out obviously. As standard practice, Toyota only replace the bottom seal....sometimes it's the top one that leaks and it looks like it's coming from the bottom. Both the seals should be replaced which is standard practice at Phoenix. I would give Mark at Phoenix a shout. They also have a big supply of V160 oil in stock. Cheers, Ro
RobSheffield
Is this the seal where the driveshaft (prop shaft) comes out?
Kev.O
Bad luck Rob. Hope you get it sorted easily
Bobbeh
Kev, yeah should be no problems, I've already been quoted for the work as they mentioned it last time it was serviced. I was like.. Im not doing anything till it starts getting serious.. and drops mean serious Think so Rob.
Matt Harwood
Mark (Phoenix) did mine with the gearbox in situ. He replaced both upper and lower rear seals. Very reasonable price too. My only critisism is that Mark allowed me to get involved and I ended up with gearbox oil in my hair. Note to self... Let them get on with it! Bobbeh
How long did it take Matt? Thing is, I have a few other bits and peices I want addressing, various fluid changes etc, and I'm just thinking about leaving the car with them all day and letting them get on with it. Matt Harwood
They did a full gearbox oil change at the same time and it was after normal hours so we were chatting quite a bit, but it was only about 2 hours or so. I know he's got loads of V160, and I think he keeps the seals in stock too.
Guru
Do them both at the same time and you should be looking at 300-400 squid I would think ....I will be doing mine soon too
Bobbeh
Checked again this morning, no drips! Arg I think I will have to get it done.. getting complained at leaving oil marks on the driveway
Homer
Do them both at the same time and you should be looking at 300-400 squid I would think God I hope not! It cost me just over £100 all in for both seals to be done at Pheonix
Guru
God I hope not! It cost me just over £100 all in for both seals to be done at Pheonix Really for both front and back gearbox seals, gearbox oil and labout to do it all?
Sheefa
Thats a bargain - well done Pheonix!
Chris Wilson
I think people are getting confused about the propshaft and gear linkage seals, which CAN be done in situ, and the gearbox input shaft seal and crankshaft rear seal, which are gearbox out jobs. Costing is very different.
Bobbeh
I think its the rear seal. I have been quoted about £300 for parts and labour, they said 3 hours to do it roughly.
Wez
I have a very small leak around that area too, been like it for ages.
Guru
Sounds like a common fault. Mine has been dripping for a while now. Quick top up every now and then is ok but I am getting it to CW to fix asap as I feel like my gearbox oil is getting low
Bobbeh
I think some seepage is ok, but when it starts getting very damp around the seal and dripping then it needs attention... hence the reason Im taking it in now.
Matt Harwood
I think its the rear seal. I have been quoted about £300 for parts and labour, they said 3 hours to do it roughly. Bloody hell Bob, that sounds a lot of money, or is that for all three?
Homer
I think its the rear seal. I have been quoted about £300 for parts and labour, they said 3 hours to do it roughly. As Matt says that seems rather steep, who's quoted you for it? I've had another look at my invoice and it was actually £218 from Phoenix, but that included parts and labour for a PAS flush. Bobbeh
Its the propshaft seal according to the last invoice, when they recommended I had it done. Toyota quote m8.. so no suprise its higher - they do have a showroom full of Yaris' that need to be paid for
Homer
The price above included prop seal and gear link seal
