redsupratt6spd
Ok guys really p***ed off with my sup. When I go to track my car I get round about 4 laps round a small track and my temp gauge goes through the roof ( off the scale ) so I slow down put on heaters etc... and it falls slowly back to the middle where it normaly sits during daily driving (never goes high on normal driving always sits in the middle). So I changed the coolant and put in toyota red for life thinking this was it sorted but no went today for a track day and same problem about 4 laps or less and temp went off the scale. My sup is still running jap turbos 1.1 ish bar but has some work done by Chris Wilson, water pump, cams ,water injection etc... not heavy modded. Still running with a SMIC which he says is spot on. I've got fitted a bomex front bumper if that makes any difference. Would it be as simple as a new rad? I'd like to sort it before I go single . When I go single i'd be upgrading the rad anyway and maybe twin electic fans. Please has anyone had this problem? I would've thought the supra can be tracked hard all day long Cheers guys J
JamieP
Thermostat or dodgy rad maybe:search:
Robert
Yeah i would say its the thermostat, probably not opening enough once warm.
Alex
New Radiator time. Electric fans installed badly will make the problem worse.
bignum
didnt you have the same problem a couple of months back, sounds like rad or stat.
Bobbeh
Something is wrong with your car. Thats why. I had no issues running around Germany.
Ian C
Have you got your undertray on and the fan cowling around the radiator? -Ian
Chris Wilson
Have you got your undertray on and the fan cowling around the radiator? -Ian That's the crux of the matter. You may find the rad is tired, too. Cooling is failrly marginal on a stock car, on track. Remove the rad duct and it's not going to work if you drive it hard. Keith C
If your '93 is still on the original rad it's probably shagged - the condition of the rad on my '95 when I replaced it was pretty awful!
redsupratt6spd
yes all the rad ducting and stuff is all there and under tray. Think i've a bigger problem now just driving 5 mins up the road parked up and left it to idle and noticed loads of white smoke but when I drove the car didn't notice any ? Have I done something from when the car has over heated? What sort of money are we talking? :(
Paul Whiffin
Fit an engine oil cooler and most of your problems will be cured in one hit.
mkirby
could be leaking from the HG? that would cause over heating and white smoke, worth getting it leak checked just in case
Paul Whiffin
White smoke means its burning water so leak down test is first place to start there.
Ian C
It's entirely possible that you've popped the headgasket due to overheating if it's any consolation you may not have overheated enough to warp the head. Every time I've taken my radiator out I've cleaned out half a forest from the bottom of it, so they do clog up, although a happy life with Toyota 4Life and regular servicing means my 10 year old rad still looks new. And it still deals with 4 or 5 laps of a track without overheating, even with a big FMIC (ducted) and a single tubbie. The rad caps can go when old and that's often a cause of overheating, maybe it's just that? -Ian
bondango
J was your viscous fan not shagged? or did you get it replaced.

No haven't got it replaced yet but I think it's more the rad now for sure after just a sort blast. So it's headgasket time ,rad time and oil cooler sounds a good bet as well. More money never seems to end, I'll get all these checks done guys thanks for the info great help J
